My cf 30 usb port is wore out. It wont stay connected you have to wiggle it to make it connect then it wont stay connected for long. Anyone ever solder a new one on? Is it something I should attempt myself or would I be better served to send it to someone who does this sort of thing. Anyone here work on these things that has a good reputation? Feel free to recommend them to me. Thanks
-
No need to solder. They unscrew and plug in.
Where are you located?

I am in Mississippi on the gulf coast. Thanks for the video tutorial. I think I can handle that. Its way easier than I thought it would be.
Now I have to be honest even though I know its going to be embarrassing. I have had this cf 30 for maybe four years. The usb port never worked right since I bought the machine off ebay. I just did without using any usb devices with it. Whats is bad is I bought it to use it in my work that requires me to plug into the usb port with a cable that connects to an engine to run the manufactures software to repair and diagnose the motor. I never knew that there were two more usb ports under the back cover until watching your video. I am sure one of them works or at least there is a very good chance they are not worn out like the side one that is under its own cover. I feel like an ass lol
I have been using my 29 that is painfully slow even though I have a perfectly functional 30 with one wore out usb port. I cant wait until tomorrow to go plug into one of these other ports and see if it works. I may even go outside right now and test these other two.
Maybe I should not be so shy and bring any toughbook questions I have here. If this post is any indication of how helpful the members here are I am going to be a very happy guy.
So the touch screen has never worked on this cf 30 since I bought it and it does not show up in the bios. I am running windows 7 home premium with 4gb ram. I put 7 on it originally it had xp pro. The touchscreen did not work with xp either.
I have a cf 31 that I cant get my software that interfaces with yamaha outboards to load on. I got it to load via the cd but get an error when trying to install the usb driver. I have done it a hundred times following the correct procedure as described by yamaha(that worked with my 29 and 30). It actually gives me a blue screen and locks up. So I have a very expensive rugged laptop I bought to work on marine engines with that I cant use. It sits in the house. Any ideas on what I am doing wrong? I am running 7 profesional with 4 gigs of ram and a 256gb solid state drive

If you ask right you will get several answers here. You aren't too far from where I am at. I am in the north east corner of Louisiana.
On your CF-30 what is the full model number from the bios? The Mk1's were known for bad touch screens. -
Post a link to the Yamaha software. At least some info//name would help.
The 30 and 31 have the same OS?
Full model number of the 31? -
Wow you guys are on top of things around here.
CF-30C3PAZBM
Both machines are running 7. The 30 is home premium and the 31 is professional. It works fine on my 29 and 30 other than the bad usb port. If I held the cable with pressure on it where the usb port connected it connected fine to the engine.
CF-31JEGAF1M
The touch screen on my 31 doesnt work the same as my 29. If I move my finger on the screen on the 29 the pointer will follow my finger. On the 31 a mouse kind of pops up and I can x out and select but the pointer does not travel with my finger. Is that right? Should the 31 work like the 29 where the pointer moves with the finger as it moves across the screen?
Much thanks -
Open ms paint and try drawing with the touch screen on the 31.
Do other usb devices work on the 31?
I would uninstall the usb driver for the Yamaha device. Download and run ccleaner to clean out the registry. Then reinstall the Yamaha driver by right clicking on it and "run as administrator" -
There isnt a link to the software that I am aware of. Its proprietary to yamaha outboards. Its nothing fancy just reads the memory dump of the computer that controls the engine. It is very useful and I would love to be able to run it on the 31. The screen on the 31 is much brighter in the daylight than the 29 or 30 not to mention how much faster it is. I can post a picture of the cd that comes from yamaha if you think that will help but its rather non descriptive
-
Any info would help me research it. A photo of the cd would be a good start.
-
I can make dots in paint but cant draw. Not sure if I am explaining it correct. The pointer will not follow when I move my finger. It will select or x out but will not move
I tried the stylus and it works in paint... -
I meant the stylus.
It sounds fine if you can draw with the stylus.
You can try to calibrate the touchscreen. Control panel//calibrate/ -

It is designed for XP. Not win7. hmm
Try to install it in compatibility mode for XP in win7.
Check the BIOS for the usb settings. See if they are set to "legacy" -
Here is a pdf manual for version 2.xx for the Yamaha Diagnostic System.

Here is the pdf manual for version 1.23. That is the same as yours.

Thanks I did not have the 2.0 pdf . It is dealer only now and as of 09 I am no longer a yamaha dealer. I wish I could buy it but Yamaha will not sell the activation code to anyone other than a dealer. 1.23 and the last update 1.33 work on almost everything made up until last year. I have 1.33 from when I was a dealer but cant locate the disc anywhere. I have tore my office apart looking for it. I kind of think its some type of compatibility issue that 1.33 would fix. I never had a problem installing 1.23 on any machine up until the 31. I had to reinstal on my 29 when the drive crashed a few years back and it went on with no problem. Same thing with the 30 went on with no problem.
Thanks for all the help -
Another option is you can download "xp mode" for windows 7 from Microsoft but only on pro and enterprise versions (if I remember right) It pretty much runs xp inside a virtual machine inside of your windows 7 os and is suppose to have full support for usb and serial ports.
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=8002
I think it's a over 500mb download, remember that if you are on a limited data plan.Shawn likes this. -
I'll read it again...but isn't the CF-30C3 NON-TOUCH? Fixable with a touch upper half by the way if you need touch. (Actually it takes less then that, but that is the simple way)
Non-simple Way:
O.K. if you want a 1000 nit upper ....change to a touch upper....if you want touch alone on your 500 nit upper add a TSPCB and a touch panel. Yes that is it's nomenclature >>> TSPCB. IOW if you want brighter change the upper cabinet.
We are looking at a apples, oranges and grapefruit scenario here.
What I mean is the CF-29 runs on XP.
CF-30 with W7? Mark 1 so XP would be easier.....also if running W7 OP needs a Vista bios. Does it need a bios upgrade/downgrade ...do you need 7? Present bios and ec number would be helpful here.
CF-31J I need more info.....re-reading the 31J may be seeing the bad USB (just a thought)
OP (original poster) W7 touch does not look like XP touch.
I am the last guy to start throwing drivers at a machine......however the CF-30MK-1 is a special case as there is no touch in the bios on a MK1. For W7 it must have a Vista (a.k.a. tablet) bios.
That being said may I recommend doing one at a time?

SSD in the 30 Mk1 and it will run sooo much better, all you need is a Kingston 120gb and that's $45. Like he said^,update the bios for 7.CF-30C3PAZBM
Model Number:
CF-30C3PAZBM
Status:
DISCONTINUED
MSRP:
$3,499
Description: WinXP, Intel Core Duo L2400 1.66GHz (Centrino), 13.3" XGA Non Touch, 80GB, 512MB, Intel 802.11a/b/g, TPM1.2, Bluetooth, No Drive
So yes,non touch. -
hmmm ...
the OP mentioned that the screen on the '31 was much brighter ...
this would lead me to believe that his other machine is a "non-touch" (dimmer) and/or has a lot of hours on the ccfls .
the '31 uses leds for the backlighting ... much better .
i wonder what his chances of "downgrading" a '31 to XP are ? -
I thought about XP on the 31. I like Ador's virtual machine from Miscrosoft idea.
Just to make things really interesting.
You could try Linux on the 31 and install the Yamaha software under Wine.
FIRST of all. If you can't find the install CD, is to make backups of ALL of the hard drives. I prefer Acronis. -
-
It very well be a compatibility issue between 1.23 and windows 7. I just tried my 30 through the other two usb ports and it did not connect. My 29 connects perfectly but it runs xp. So it seems I need to look into running xp as a virtual machine on my 30 and 31 in order to run 1.23 successfully. I have to say you guys really go out of your way to be helpful. I truly appreciate it.
I am not a software oriented guy so it will probably take some trial and error to get xp set up in a virtual machine on my 31. I am going to look back on the post and see if I can understand how to best go about trying this
The touchscreen will be a non issue if I can get my 31 palying nice with my yamaha software. The screen is very dim compared to the 31 and there is no touchscreen in the bios so it may be a non touch model. Will a picture of the bios give you the info needed to say if it is or not? -
I only helped install it on a thinkpad (it's what my company gets) that one of the maintenance supervisors had to get the special CAT software for the engines to work right.
-
I installed virtual machine and xp mode on my 31 and it has solved my yamaha software issue.
It works for a few then the usb connection drops and I have to restart the usb at the top of the screen but at least it works. I will probably uninstall and reinstall the software to see if fixes the dropping usb connectivity. The usb driver loaded with no issues so I dont think the driver is the problem but I will uninstall it as well and see if it makes a difference.
I am ecstatic with it even working somewhat on the 31. I bought it for that very reason. I was very disappointed when it would not work. Now I can use it for what I intended for when I purchased it.
Thanks for all the help guys it really is appreciated -
Thanks for the follow up.

Take a look at this. Might it be a help?

Panasonic lists complete XP drivers for the 31,so yes it should run it fine.

yep ... a picture or two of the bios will help sort out the display/touch issue(s) .
man , as cheap as used SSDs are , i would be tempted to go the route of getting XP to play natively on the '31 ... or go the dual boot route .
i am a little confused though ...
above , you mention that the '31 is dim and also the '31 is bright ... maybe a typo ? -
In my post I was trying to drop a subtle reminder.....to all posters.
CF-30C3 is a non-touch unless it has been modified.
Touchscreen NEVER shows up in bios in a CF-30 MK1....hence the bios upgrade/downgrade. (applies also to CF-19 MK1) I don't know why, it just is.
Larry, He was talking about the 31 in comparison to the CF-30....number confusion is easy.
Carry on. -
How can I tell if I have the bios flashed correct? From reading Sadlmkr's post above it looks like my 30 did not have a touchscreen. Therefor is it also the less bright screen as well?
Sadlmkr I changed the usb ports the way your link instructed on the 31. I havent had a chance to check and see if it works yet.
I am for sure going to put a ssd in the 30 at some point. Not sure if I will add touch screen or not. I do like the idea of updating the screen to a brighter one. The screen on the 30 is dim in comparison of the 31. Its not anywhere near as bad as my 29 but its hard to see in the day none the less.
Rough idea on the price for the brighter screen for the 30. Is it something I could do myself?
Thanks for all the help -
Rough $150/shipped CONUS for complete unit. Just drop your hdd , battery and optical in and put your C3 in the garage or basement for future reference.
IF I sent one would you want XP bios? Your bios is definitely for a non-touch......
Did I mention it had Verizon WWAN and OEM GPS? -
now there's a deal ... very little fuss .
i have swapped top units , lcds , touch screens , and other stuff ... there is a combination of screens/lcds that will work or not work (the result is "techicolor swirlies") .
uuuggghhh !
drop the dime for a SSD ... a 128 gig will do nicely ... then clone the hdd to the ssd . -
technicolor swirlie.
Thinking blue terlet water ( thanks Archie) three bullies and a nerd.
By technicolor swirlie Larry means that different mk CF 30's use different polarizing schemes and lcd// top half pieces and parts may give strange effects when swapped. -
"may give strange effects when ..."
there are other things that give similar effects .
however , i shall digress . -
I get Kingston 120gb ssd's for $40 or so new.
-
That seems like a very good deal if I am understanding you correctly.
I was not able to put xp mode on my 30 as its the home edition of 7 x86. You have to have pro for it to run xp mode. I have a copy of xp pro that I could put on it and run my yamaha software on the 30. Is 7 that much better than xp on a 30?
I am just wondering if its worth putting any more money in the 30 since I already have a nice 31 that I use every day and now it runs my yamaha software thanks to you guys. -
Another option would be try "virtual box" it's free. It will let you install what ever you want. There is even a portable version.

I will give this a try tomorrow thanks
