Talked to them on the phone today to ask how many they had. She said a few but if I wanted more, "they would bring them in". Not sure what that meant.
I have done a lot of business with Bob Johnson over the past 4 years. Good Company.

Make sure to find out if the shorter cable has the white backing at the end. If it does, you're fine. The plain backing was only meant for the 27 so it's a little shorter & you'll have to tape it in pretty well to keep it from coming out.

Does anyone know if these will work on a CF-28 600Mhz machine? I thought I read somewhere that you cannot upgrade the earlier machines.

the only one you can't do on the 600 is the full-stroke backlit one. the rubber ones work fine

Thanks gravitar. Do you know if I need something special or do you think the one listed above would work? I have never taken the keyboard off and don't know how.

the keyboard on that website should be a drop-in replacement for yours. the only thing thats a little different from regular to rubber keyboard is the hinge cover. if you decide to get the rubber keyboard, go ahead and try it with your hinge cover and if it doesn't fit right let me know and i'll dig up one of the other style. i'm sure i have one somewhere. yours might work as-is though.. its going the OTHER way that I know doesn't work too well.

    Zero , TBTech -

Is the rubber backlit keyboard a different part # on the CF-28 Mk1 vs the Mk3? It seems as if the ribbon cable on my Mk1 KB is just a hair too short to fit in my Mk3 - it keeps pulling out of the lower connector when I screw down the two bottom screws on the coverplate, and I'm being UBER-CAREFUL not to tug on it in any way.

They might have been different straight from the factory but not anymore. It's possible the mk 1s first used the same ones from the 27 before they realized the length issue. Now there's just 1 part number. CF-WMKB281L The shorter one is 281M and while it will work, you have to tape the shorter of the 2 cables down.

Okay... Here's what you do to keep them from pulling out. (I thought I posted this somewhere...) Anyway... You CAREFULLY slide in the first ribbon cable and close the brown lever to lock it in place. Then you take a piece of clear packing tape about 1.5 inches long and lay it over the connector, cable, lever and onto the mobo. Press it firmly in place! This locks the ribbon cable in place. Then you can use a piece of double sided tape and put a small piece under the spot where the next one will lay after you insert the cable. (Get it?) You then push that into place, push in the cable lock and then press the cable down onto the tape to lock that one in place. Then you can carefully push the cover into place. When it comes time to put in the final two screws to lock down the plate... Lean the keyboard toward the LCD a little to give the cable just a little slack and then screw in the last two screws closest to the cable. This can be tricky as you are screwing at an angle! Then lay the keyboard in place and bootup, open a notepad document and test ALL the keystrokes and combinations PRIOR to reinstalling the rest of the hardware. It's been my experience that if you can type one complete row; qwertyuiop[]\ and then turn on ALL CAPS and do the same thing... That all the connections are good and you can then button the rest of it up.

I just received my 4 keyboards from the link above. Three of them were in great shape... New looking as a matter of fact. The 3rd one looked like it came out of a warzone. There were white parts worn through and it looked terrible. I don't use keyboards like that... I throw them away. I have emailed them to ask about returning it for another. I'll keep you posted.

On a side note... The seller was good enough to call me and leave a message warning me about the fragile nature of the brown lever and if it breaks I would need a new motherboard. I thought that was pretty cool. I called her up (Marissa I think) and talked with her for a little bit. She said they have about 50 of these keyboards. She told me that I would be VERY impressed with the keyboards I would be getting. (I was with 3 of them) But that they usually sell the beat up ones at a reduced price to others usually in batch form. Maybe the one that I received was a mistake... We'll see.

Yeah, it can be done - it's not easy; requires a VERY steady hand and a professional quality (Weller or Hakko) closed-loop temp controlled soldering iron with like a 1mm tip. It also only works on copper foil type ribbon cables; the carbon deposit & silver deposit cables cannot be repaired that way.

Don't they also have very thin conductive tape you can use to repair ribbon cables?

Naaah... not really. There is conductive ribbon made for repairing traces blown off of a PCB, and it DOES WORK... if you can get the PCB clean enough for the trace to bond to. You still need to be able to solder the ends, though.

For the silver deposit type ribbon cables, they make a conductive resin for repairing the traces on car rear window defoggers; I've used this with some success. (And to unlock a few AMD Athlon processors ;)

    Hi,

will the rubber keyboard from a cf-28 fit the 29? If so, does anyone here have one in good shape at a decent price? I see them on ebay a bunch but they almost never have a part# listed.

    Thanks

Someone here said they work fine in the CF-29... Just like in the 28. I think the best price you will find is the link above!

Ok got mine today, condition is "Serviceable".
Since the 28 thats it going on is in Great condition, I took the skin off the other BL I messed the traces up on and transplanted it onto the one I got today. Was pretty easy to do. They are stuck down with some type of glue that stays tacky and the blue tape around the edge holds down a tiny flap of the rubber on 3 sides.
Remove the blue tape, peel off slow. Peel off skin do not touch sticky side and keep it clean. Once back on new circuit board go around 3 edges and make sure the tiny flap is flipped over the edge of board and tape back down with some clear shipping tape, thin strips. Press from top to make good contact with the old glue.
This has not been time tested yet, but seems like it will work fine and hold up fine.
Soooooo, if you still want the old BL KB with the transplanted skin and bad trace, its yours! PM me again cause I cleaned out my box.
    Rick H...

Ok got the "Re-Skinned" BL KB installed. Types like I guess like a rubber one types. Wont be getting rid of my clicky one just yet! All keys work and the KB lites up, although not as much as I would like. Will look for an adjustment, if there is such a thing.

Try FN+F12, there should be 3 levels of brightness and off I believe. At least, that's how I remember mine working.
