Friends of Bill and Bob will really relate.

I did not get enough sleep this weekend, (my own stupidity)so by the end of work yesterday I was incredibly exhausted. :(
Too exhausted to even eat dinner ......So I decided to instead work on a Toughbook with major electronic issues ......

So where is a good source for SMD motherboard fuses? Now I need about 6...

I have local store here in Germany some streets away :), ok not helpful for u.

Or online...Their are a lot of possibilities. Maybe this one: SMD-Fuses at reichelt elektronik

But I recycle a lot of parts from non Toughbook computers ;)

do you have the schematic and/or the mA rating and physical size of the smd fuses needed ?

jameco and mouser electronics carry smd parts but the prices may be high in small quantities (not to mention the shipping costs) .
checking at cheesebay is a good idea .

No schematics for this one....I can read the amps from the fuse or motherboard. I hope...
Physical size, well I can look at them :D

I may be able to salvage fuses from old motherboards...I have a Hot air station....Hot air won't destroy the used fuse, will it?

Can I piggyback the new fuse without any issues? I figure I can, but at this point I better ask even the simple questions..

Yes, I thought it was a perfect example of HALT.......But I got too stupid before I read the HALT sign...

you can piggyback fuses as long as the original is "open" ...
i have done this in the past , looks kinda tacky but if one is in a hurry and does not make a habit of it , it is ok for Q&D .

i have removed fuses with a soldering iron ... on and off real fast .
those fuses are only good for so many thermal cycles ... as outlined in the data sheet on the devices at hand .
i have not had problems with "recycling" chip fuses .

perhaps the fuse is the same physical size as one in a (say) CF-30 ... this would provide a size reference .
elsewise , accurate measurements or a straight on picture with a mm scale rule will do .
these fuses , like their resistor and capacitor brethren come in specific physical sizes .
provide the numbers on the device , although the current rating may or may not be *coded* on the device .

what piece of equipment are you working on ?

I have dial calipers to get a more exact size......
Most Toughbook fuses state 1A or 2A on them.

It's a Toughbook that I have already invested more than I probably should, considering I seem to be making it worse...I should have just rolled up the money and smoked it. I would have gotten more for my investment..

I should walk away from it for a week or two I suppose. But as you and I know, I am way too compulsive/obsessive to ever do that.

fine business on the calipers ... they do not lie (provided they are calibrated to zero) .

yeah , i know what you mean about things going from bad to worse ...
it is like chewing on a tough piece of meat ... it just gets bigger .
or "yessir , he done engineered it right off the air ..." .

"I should walk away from it for a week or two I suppose. But as you and I know, I am way too compulsive/obsessive to ever do that."
/me pours out a bag of skittles on shawn's coffee table .
sometimes , the best thing to do is to walk away from *something* for a while ... there is no shame in that .
convincing ourselves of that point is not easy .

"I should have just rolled up the money and smoked it. I would have gotten more for my investment.."
what is the difference between a egg sandwich and a ham sandwich ?
with an egg sandwich , the chicken is involved ... with a ham sandwich , the pig is committed .
so what yer saying here is that you are a ham sandwich on the deal ?

    anywho ...
i await the measurements to be posted .

I know myself well enough.. I am the ham.....I probably should be the chicken, but it ain't gonna happen.

At this point either I will fix the fuses or I will wait to find a new motherboard...I was hoping for a quick repair, but it's going to be a long term project now...My determination can take over my common sense....

I'll have to send you photos of my truck,,,It started off with me wanting a wood steering wheel...... My Ranger now looks so much like a Lincoln that I fool Ford dealers... :D:thumbsup:

Measurements will be posted. Hopefully I will wait until the weekend to even look at it...

    Thank you very much Larry..:hi2:

Fair to assume this is the 53 you have? I will have a spare, but buggered LCD for one soon for experimental purposes if you want it. Non touch but still works.

    Hey Larry,you desperado,how's things? :D

doin' ok here kerry ... hardly any snow and the temperature has been hanging around 32F ... it was -10F for a couple of days .

    @ shawn :
yeah ... there are a few outfits that carry smd components available in small quantities .
a quick check at geasebay shows many sellers ... once you get past all those "led fuse lamps" .

what model is the unit ?
i may be able to get an idea of what is needed by exercising my google-fu .
if you are going to be experimenting it may be a good idea to get poly-fuses (if they will fit) :

Kerry, yes, I'll take the LCD.

Larry, wrong model, BUT the idea to use a parts manual to list the fuses was a great help..Fuses are all still good..

I had to completely remove the motherboard to find them...I have learned a lot already.....

    ok on the fuses ...
yeah , as long as the "base model" motherboard is the same , the parts list for certain components will usually jibe .
over the years i have come to realize that most of the time there are no changes made to fuse ratings .
there must be a reason that you suspected the fuse(s) of being TUITB ... to the point of removing the motherboard , what problems are you encountering ?

    @ kerry :
so , yer mobile bone-pile is growing ... how long before the neighbors start getting ugly about it ?
