Hey guys -
Today's Shell Shocker
http://www.newegg.com/Special/ShellShocker.aspx
is a Seagate 80GB 2.5" 5400 RPM SATA HDD for $19.99 (Limit 3)
Now before you go all apesh!t over that ABSURDLY low price, there IS a caveat:
It's NOT a Laptop HDD.
It's a 2.5" HDD designed for STATIONARY APPLICATIONS like POS terminals and Kiosks, video game consoles and DVRs, etc.
See MFR application sheet here:

I figured for 20 bux I'd get it as a spare HDD for my firewall/router... I'm sure there are dozens of other good uses for a cheap HDD like this as well.

I'm gonna buy this and put it in my toughbook and then drop my toughbook a thousand times to try and break this drive... I'll bet ya a nickel that it would be FINE!
-
Notice it only has 2mb cache. Probably good for a portable USB housing. Maybe not so good for a system drive.

For 20 bux, it's a steal for guys trying to build cheap machines for fleet use or to give away like I do...

BAM!!!
Glad I got mine when I did...

80GB for you, 160GB for me... -
Isn't this like having a Toughbook made out of plastic?... Like Dull Laptop?
-
In what way?
It's just a 2.5" HDD that's made without the laptop HDD "drop sensor" to make it cheaper to produce for OEMs wanting stationary applications. There are a LOT of stationary devices which use 2.5" HDDs to cut down on size, weight, heat and/or power consumption. This HDD was made to cater to them at a lower price point.
Remember, when the CF-28 was made NO HDD had a "drop sensor"...

Wow, a pair of these would have been perfect for network storage on my router! Oh, well, you snooze, you lose!
-
What kind of router do you have that accepts network storage drives?
-
Cisco had the NS 5400 series on the commercial line... now you can buy a LinkSys home router with USB port for NAS.

Storage... storridge! -
I have looked at the D-Link DIR-685 as I presently have no N compatibility, but it is a little too "pretty" for my taste!
But frankly, I ultimately want a LOT more in the way of network storage to be accessed remotely. These drives would have just given me a cheap way to play with the technology.
