Has anyone else tryed to do this? I see there is a thread on a SATA Mod .
I think i will try to do this with a 80gig SSD but i was wondering if there
are any drawbacks to doing this .

I haven't done because the Samsung 160GB is faster, less aggravation, and costs a lot less money. If you read the thread you would already know that. "Ignore switch"? For "ignorant" people I presume.

CAP is far from being a Troll. He is VERY knowledgeable and will go out of his way to help people. We always tell the new people to search first and ask later. It keeps the board much cleaner and we can share a lot more information if we are not repeating ourselves on a daily basis.
This forum is very busy and we need to have a few guidelines to keep it in some sort of order. This is a great forum and the FAQ and search function makes the usual daily questions self serve. Otherwise we get the same question asked three times a week with each poster starting a new thread. There was no personal slight towards you coming from CAP. It is the basic response we give new members on subjects that have been well covered.

well the samsung def wont be faster than the ssd, maybe faster than the sata hdd. with ide though it seems the limit is 320gb, a user may want 500gb +.

i may do the mod at some point

I have done the mod with great success. Currently running a Kingston 128SSD model number SV100S2128G in my TB-29 mk-5. I would have to say this was one of the best mods I have done on this machine to date. It was a little tricky to remove the right amount of foam to get the PATA to SATA adapter to fit with the new drive, but well worth the work.

All I can say now is that this thing is virtually indistructible..LOL, no spining plotter:

Which brand of PATA to SATA adapter did you use. Finding the right one is the big thing...many don't work.

I used this adapter with a Kingspec 1.8" 64 GB SLC SSD:

1 44 Pin 2.5'' Hard Drive SATA to IDE Converter Adapter - eBay (item 150613323014 end time Jul-31-11 20:42:48 PDT)

Kingspec 1.8" SLC SSD is shorter than 2.5" ones, and fits nicely in caddy with room to spare. I let my Windows 7 computer create the partition, which is aligned properly for SSDs. I Previously tried a Renice IDE SSD, but it was sloooooow. This Kingspec is nice and fast. I removed the jumper on the adapter:

NEW 1.8" SLC SSD SATA2 64GB Hard Solid State Drive - eBay (item 300530696167 end time Jul-25-11 20:13:53 PDT)

Has anyone been able to clear the 90MB/sec average read IDE limit in the CF-29? Even with the adapter I assume that it will still be limited on the motherboard side.

I have a SATA Samsung 32GB 1st gen 1.8" SLC SSD in my home pc that will hit ~240MB/sec average read rate (~300MB/sec peak) in the Ubuntu read tests, but my IDE CF-29's and the CF-18 have not cleared the lower 90MB/sec IDE limit. I'll try out my new CF-74's when I get a chance (MK G IDE I think) and see if there is any difference.

I'll also want to test the CF-74's express card slot, as they make SSD's that use this slot, even though they are slightly more expensive then the sata SSD's.

That e-bay SSD seems very inexpensive for a SLC 64GB, has anyone run a speed test on it? It is an amazing deal if they work properly! I just bought some of the Intel 311 SLC 20GB units for ~$130, however it is a larger drive (2.5"), so it may not fit depending on the size of the adapter.

    :D

I found the PATA to SATA adapter on ebay about 6 months ago. Unsure of what brand it was though. The seller's name was surplusseller2010 and the item was listed as "ULTIMATE Toughbook CF-18 CF-29 IDE to SATA Upgrade kit".

Outside of the touchscreen transplant, the 2 gig RAM upgrade, emissive backlit keyboard install, DIY GPS kit install, the SSD install was the best mod performed on this 29mk5.

Yes I know this TB is a complete Frankenstein but it is my ultimate indestructible machine

I have not done any synthetic benchmarks on the Kingspec SATA SLC SSD. If you have a slow stuttering SSD, you don't need a benchmark to detect the slowness and stuttering. It is very noticeable! My Mtron 1.8" ZIF SLC SSD in the mk2 (1.3 GHz) CF-29 was much more responsive and faster than the mk4 (1.6 GHz) CF-29 with the Renice IDE MLC SSD. This Kingspec one has the correct SLC model # KSD-SA18.1-064SJ (the MLC ones end with MJ), is faster and has no stuttering problem. This is not to say all MLC SSDs have the slowness and stuttering. The ones with the newer controllers are pretty fast. I have a Samsung 470 MLC in my CF-W8, and it is very fast with absolutely no stuttering.

(And yes, it was a great price for the Kingspec 64 GB SLC SSD!! I paid $340.00 for the Mtron 32 GB just 2 years ago.)
