I have several CF 29's around that are running very slow. Who has had the best luck, if any, installing a SSD in them.
Thanks!

You want one of these adapters to use sata drive. Then you can use sata SSD. Designed for a CF18, but work great in 29's too.

The good news is I for one can tell you they work great but the bad news is "Product Discountinued" sold out. Maybe you might find one on ebay.
 -

There's always techtuff. Best CF-29 mod I ever made.
 -
The digitzoom is the techtuff one. Maybe techtuff has some of his own??
 -

I'm not sure. At a glance it doesn't look like they're the same as the one I got from techtough. I'd have to take it apart to be sure.
 -

Read the first post in the thread I linked. Here is a Cut n Paste of it. Look at the bottom link that Techtuff posted.
 -

So it appears that the Digitzoom is the one to use, but is discontinued. Any other ones fit the bill?
 -

I can't make it any easier than this.

Perfect! Thanks!

Works great,I did several 29's and 51's. Use Samsung or Kingston drives and you will really like it.

He sold 2 types of these at one time. He only sells one type now. The one he sells now might look like a lot of the cheap China ones but it's not. Many have tried them but have not worked and in the end have bought his. Remember it will speed up your 29 but it will only run at sata 1...no faster.fj1289 and kode-niner like this. -
It actually gets further bogged down by the underlying ATA-6/Ultra ATA-100 controller which is even slower that SATA-1. I did this mod over a year ago and have since stopped using the 29 but I remember that the difference in boot and application load times was night and day despite the bus limitation. Those 5400RPM PATA drives are themselves a real bottleneck.

You are right about that. You need a SSD to see the big difference. I have been wanting to install this in my CF-M34 but too much on the go at the moment. -

Worked great in my M34

Did you use a SSD...size? -
I don't remember. I will boot it up and look.

I have heard there is a limit as to how big a SSD that can be used. Any idea how large will work on a CF-29?
 -

I have heard 320, 500 and 750 but I never tried it.

older threads with info. Some of these were before the Techtuff adapter was available.

I've run 180 and 320 Intel ssd in all marks of CF-29. Techtuff adapter.

does using a ssd on a cf18 or cf29 require replacing win xp with say win 7?
ive never done a windows upgrade so got no idea other than xp apparently not having any native ssd support. -

You can run an SSD in XP,you just need a software tool to trim the drive every so often.

OK, I was in Canada fishing but I am home now. Got the adapter from Ebay, bought a Samsung SSD, and now I am back using my CF-29. It isn't lightning fast but much better than before!
Thanks guys for all of the help!Shawn likes this. -

Which adapter did you get on ebay ?
 -

 -

So, what do you think of the boot time?
 -

toughasnails Toughbook Moderator Moderator
Good choice. You should have no proper with that one. -
Boot time is not nearly as fast as with my Toshiba with a SSD but I think it boots in less than a minute, which is better than with a regular drive. Processor is still much slower.
 -

Linux on a SSD is really speedy.
 -
I haven't used Linux, I have a 1.4 Toughbook I would be willing to try it out on. Which version would you recommend?
 -

I will let our Linux man Sadlmkr answer the question of which one to try.
He has vastly more knowledge about Linux than I have.
I sent him a message...
Linux MX-15 386 non-pae.
This one I think.
