SSD issues with older Toughbooks

I've been having an issue with my CF-19 Mk1 and CF-T7
I wanted to install an SSD in the CF-19 (Hynix 500GB, specifically) and it reads it fine in the BIOS, but then flags it with a "0200: Fixed Disk Error" The error can bypassed by pressing F2; afterwards, I installed an OS to it from a USB drive.

After it completed installation, rebooted and I pressed F2 again, it claims there's no OS on the disk.
To verify the file integrity, I plugged the drive into another computer (it's the one I'm posting from now)
I also put it into another ToughBook (the CF-T7) to ensure it wasn't a hardware failure or a special issue with the Mk1 and it responded with the same error and behavior.

Panasonic support told me they can be particular about what brand and type of SSD they accept, which didn't make sense considering the SATA board between drives should respond the same if it's to spec.
The agent also told me the older models don't work with SSDs and I didn't understand that explanation either.

I see SSDs are commonly used across various models without issue and I was hoping someone could tell me what the issue is and how to remedy it.

 

i have installed ssd drives in cf-19 mk5 and older cf-t5 and t8
the t5 and t8 i used a ide to msata since msata 128 drives used here were cheap. no issues though. runs faster

Do you mean a SATA to mSATA adapter?
What brand of adapter and SSD did you use?

 

You are correct I cannot remember if the cf-t5 is ide or sata but either or i use the ide and sata to msata adapters. i even use ide to msata adapter for my retro laptop pentium 2-266. Like i mentioned since at the time i was able to get samsung msata drives here in Canada on ebay for very cheap.

that is the sata version i use and works for sure on cf-t8
the cf-19 is currently using a regular samsung ssd drive evo 860 pro with no issues

 

Is your signature correct, in regards to you owning a CF-19 Mk1?
Would you be able to swap caddies from your Mk5 to the Mk1 to verify the configuration works for me?

Could you also tell what firmware revision you have on the Mk1?

 

Sorry but i do not have the mk1 anymore. i ended up taking it apart and using most of the parts on the mk5. touchpad keyboard and some of the usb ports. I can probably say it was the latest firmware. I normally try and find the most up to date ones. Used the same caddy, is but this time i took out the sata to msata and just used a samsung evo.
I only tried samsung ssd on these machines. i have a cf-c2 and h2 and both are samsung.
I would try using a different drive first if you have one. and or plug that drive into a pc and run some diagnostic software if the manufacture gives. check for latest firmware on drive. check if there is a drive size limitation for mk1, probably not.

 

I’ve used SSD’s in mk1 CF-19’s no problem but I usually only use a 120 Kingston for those.
I run 32 bit Mx-19 operating system (Linux)
