Hi, i was wondering, how much a ssd speed up things in a cf19 mk1 with xp system ?
Yes i know that xp wasn't made for ssd memory, but... will it work ? If yes, how will work ?

OK, but when it slow down after few months, it will be faster then a normal 7200 rpm hd, same level or slower ?
I found here a NEW ssd 64gb for 60€ and a USED ssd 128gb for 70€, is a good deal for you ? Which one would you buy between these two.

EHi it's the second EDIT i do here, it's very difficult to write with this rubber keyboard.

My CF-19 has been working under XP with the same little old 64GB SSD for 4.5 years (21K hours uptime). I still get 75MB/sec average transfer rate (not too terrible) and 0.3 ms access time - the latter in particular still makes it feel much faster in everyday usage than any spinning disk computer I have available, including workstations. So yes, maybe XP is suboptimal for an SSD, but even in the long run I believe an SSD will remain a noticeable upgrade over a conventional drive in an old CF-19 with XP.

Do not buy used SSD - it may have serious wear already.
64GB is too small drive I think.

I am running SSD in all my Toughbooks with XP and W7 and they run great. I have 80GB to 256GB, Intel and Samsung drives. Go with a name brand drive and watch out for the OCZ drives, they have been having a lot of problems with them. Read the reviews before you buy.

Check out this site...great bunch of guys that are more than happy to help you out http://thessdreview.com/Forums

What brand is your SSD if you don't mind my asking? Did you do any tweaks to XP to reduce the number of writes?
Here are some suggested tweaks, I've only run an SSD under Win7 so I'm not sure if all of these are really important and tend to think that just a few are really needed:
    Making XP pro SSD friendly

    Another:
SSD Tweak Guide (sort of) » TweakHound

As I said I've not tested these so I'm not sure which are really important perhaps others with XP
SSD experience can comment and we could come up with a most effective list.

I just did a basic install of XP Pro and it is about 6 GB with a 1 GB page file. It will certainly
fit with many more apps and even a small music library. The most economical way is to
have the OS and apps on the SSD and large data files such as music and video, etc. on
another drive or server if that works for you.

So far all 5 of my SSD have been used, all G2 intel's (40gb and 80gb)(yes I know 40 is small but on a desktop with dual harddrives that is plenty for the OS) except one arch memory unit I got. They all tested good, some sellers will even show you the report on it. Girlfriends Mk1 CF-19 has 40gb and her Mk2 has 80gb intel. I never ran a speed test before I gave it back to her but she was VERY happy and said it was a lot faster. (XP on Mk1 and 7 x64 on the Mk2.) If you decide to go the used route and decide on intel get a generation 2 or higher. They have better software for managing the ssd. You can get it straight from the Intel site. SSDSA2MH080G1HP This is a G1 or generation one ssd model number. look at the last 4 digits, G1HP, you can see the G1 in the model number. You want the G2 or higher if the price is about the same. Depends on what is available in your area.

I do, do a few teaks with mine. I did several tweaks when first testing this out in my CF-28, XP with 4gb compact flash with IDE adapter. Look up a few guides on the net to get an idea of what setting you need to change.

I don't quite remember (and don't feel like getting it out of its cage :)), but HD Tune claims it is a Samsung MCCOE64G5MPP.

Not much - in fact, as a starting point I just cloned the original Panasonic XP install over to the SSD with Acronis. I did not know about the whole alignment stuff back then, but I have found no reason to change/redo this later. I do not use virtual memory, and some program caches and tmp-directories I have moved over to a RAM drive that uses those ~800MB of my 4GB RAM that the 32bit XP cannot address normally. I may have to test some of those tweaks now, though. :)

The intel SSD toolbox is usefull under 7, look into it, if it works with XP you can use at least trim (keeps it very speedy) and the controler inside the SSD will try to decrease wear as much as possible. Other mfg's might have their own software as well. You should check if the drive you want to buy has this software and that it is XP-proof.
Also very important on SSD's is to have some extra space. The more unused space you have, the longer the theoretical life.

One more tip. I use CCleaner with XP on a SSD. It has a tool to erase all unused areas on a drive. This is somewhat like what TRIM does for Win7. I run that once a week or so. It seems to keep the SSD running fast with XP, although I really have not used that laptop much. I have sold several CF-29 with older Transcend 32GB SSDs with the Panasonic factory load for XP and added CCleaner and told the new owner to use it weekly. The new owners have not complained about their SSD slowing down.

Dont know why it wouldn't be working. Or it must be something specific to the mk1, but in my mk5 I've been running a 600gb intel 320 for some years now. Not the leatest & greatest, but it is reliable and much faster then a hdd!
