Well here's what happened, I took my perfectly good cf-29 cleaned a bunch of dirt off with a nice hot shower. Then after I dried it all off I noticed that the touchscreen was way off. I re calibrated it and it seems like the center of the screen has some play in it. Almost like there is a air gap and the outter parts of the screen are firm/tight with perfect touchscreen precision.

I looked very carefully at the screen at angle today and seems like there is something oilly looking possibly water under the protector or the lcd, but I can't see it when the screen is powered on.

Maybe water under the screen protector? If so how do I remove the protector?

    Thanks

Ummm... it's possible... but sounds much likelier (from the behavior you describe) that the water-seal around the touchscreen wasn't QUITE up to the task, and now you have water between your touchscreen layers and or the LCD.

I would recommend you DO NOT power it up again until you have a chance to disassemble the LCD case and inspect further; the chances of shorting out the LCD inverter at the CCFLs is VERY HIGH.

Do it as soon as you can; the longer it stays like this, the more chance water has to make ingress.

How easy is cracking the lcd case? Just those screws on the outside?

I'll have to refer you to other members for the 29... I don't own one... I know that when I worked on my CF-28s I removed the LCD from the base to prevent overstressing connecting cables. after that, yeah - pretty much unbutton the top & then the underlying circuit boards & finally the LCD itself.

I don't know in your case; if you're asking how the cover comes apart, I don't know if you're "Techie-inclined" enough to be puttering around in there without running the risk of injuring something else in there.

Mnem is correct I fear... Remove your battery and then the keyboard trim, hinge covers and the 16 or so screws on the back of the LCD. Then you can carefully separate the LCD from the touchscreen.

    Be careful!

Wow, there was A LOT of water on the back of the LCD electronics and it still works!! Unfortunately I could only crack it about 2 inches open because I have to get small security bits to get the last 2 screws out. I have a fan blowing in there now so hopefully it helps dry it out. Also I see 2 wires that seem to go to a hidden antenna under the rubber bumpers. I also see some type of module as well separate from everything else. It is like rectangular and has rubber around the edges. Any idea on what that is?

Also does anyone have any idea on how to SEAL this screen up when I put it back together?

    Thanks

The last two screws with the different heads
Do not have to be removed
Hinges and the all others only

Oi... since he has had a problem with water ingress, I suspect someone has been in there before him and separated the touchscreen sealing tape... I wouldn't be surprised if same person put those 2 special screws back in the wrong place... :frown:

The torx screws just hold the corner cover down, and I think they are used to intimidate the average person from disassembling the cover

They are not interchangeable with the other screws as they are only ¼” long and won’t stay in the other screw holes , so that can't happen

I removed them, the first time I had a lid apart not knowing better
Someone has been in there before if the screen seal is gone

I hope he finds a replacement

What happened was I was trying to pull the LCD out and leave the touchscreen in place and I guess it put a bit to much pressure in the right place and it cracked all the way across. Man it sucks, but I just need the one piece and no one has it. I will probably end up buying a whole unit and just use that one and sell mine piece by piece.

You'll never find just the touchscreen... Or at least... You'll be waiting quite a while!
