    Hey all,

So this is a story that shows some short-sightedness on my part. When the original hard drive failed on my CF52, I upgraded to a 500 gb hybrid drive which worked just fine, however through a download service as a student I got Windows 7 the 64 bit version and there do not seem to be any 64 bit drivers for the laptop's Mobility Radeon HD 3650 video card. The video driver has crashed several times while I've been trying to write this message and I'm having serious trouble getting anything done. I know I should have used the 32 bit version, but I don't know an easy way to install it without shelling out cash for a new OS and transferring a ton of data so I'm really lost as to what to do.

Am I the only one who's had a problem like this? Can anyone provide me with some advice?

    Interesting.

    Nice Machine.

Without making any particular recommendations. :D it is common to take a step upwards as your machine is "not supported".

The easy way is 32 bit. The other way is drivers from/for a 64 bit 52M. I'm speaking of Panasonic drivers from the jp site.

Google "Panasonic driver cf-52 64 bit jp" and take a look around.

Others will chime in, like if your unit reports "not supported". That hasn't stopped us yet. :D

    G'luck

I fear I could not find the page you were referring to, or even the M model you were talking about. Could you please provide a direct link?

I tried them, unfortunately I still have the same problem.

Perhaps this will help, the instructions for the 32 bit driver installation claimed:

    1. Run "c:\util2\drivers\ativideo\setup.exe".
    2. Reboot the computer.
    3. [Start] - [All Programs] - [Accessories] - [Command Prompt](Selection
    from right-clicking)
    4. Selection"Run as administrator"
    5. "cd \util2\drivers\ativideo" is input. Enter is pushed. 9 1/25/2010 Mandatory - Yes
    Packages\Drivers\Display\W7
    _INF\CL_88712.inf
    .\bin\atisetup.exe -install
    c:\program files\ati technologies\ati.ace\corestatic\
    cli.exe start systemtray
    6. It is input as "Def1stSS.js". Enter is pushed.
    7. "Command Prompt" is shut by "x Button ".
    8. Run [Start] - [All Programs] ->[Catalyst Control Center] ->[CCC -
    Advanced]
    9. [Graphics] tab of [PowerPlay] is selected.
    10. Regarding [PowerPlay Settings], remove the check of [Enable
    PowerPlay] check box.
    11. "Apply" is pushed. "OK" is pushed.

However, when I reached step 6, the following appeared:
    Driver troubleshooting.JPG

So i couldn't continue. Does that help?

I'd recommend NOT installing the full driver package because it includes the Catalyst Control Panel that uses the MS .NET framework and is known to be troublesome. First delete the ATI driver and Catalyst. Then use WinZip or 7Zip to extract all the ATI driver files. Then MANUALLY load the just video driver from the extraction folder. Don't let Windows update it, keep the Panasonic version.

This worked good for me on a 52A that also has an ATI video board. Let us know if it works for you.

How do you manually load the video driver? I ask, because I tried to use the instal wizard and it failed.

I tried using the device manager targeting the bin folder extracted by 7Zip, but it claims that my driver is already up to date. Do I need to do some sort of deletion of the old driver? If so, how?

Also thank you for all the help you've given so far. it has provided me with much hope.

Yes, as I said, the first thing is to delete your current video driver. Go to Device Manager, open the Display section, right-click on whatever shows there, and select Delete.

After that you should be able to *manually* load the saved Panasonic video driver . . . select Updte Driver, then Let Me Pick, then Have Disk, then Browse to the folder you save it in, drill down to the Driver folder if necessary.

Also I'm having serious problems swapping out the driver. When I uninstall it using the device manager it disappears until I scan for hardware changes, and even then all the options are greyed out screenshot incoming.

Personally, I would worry more about installing the GOBI and Hotkey drivers.
Get rid of all the Yellow exclamation marks in device manager.
Once you have all of the drivers installed and working..... Make a backup of your drive...

Then I would concern myself with update / uninstall / change the video drivers if it gives you any trouble.

The thing is, I get an error message from win 7 stating that the video drivers crash approximately every 10 minutes. I can barely surf the web with this machine at this point and that's all a video driver issue. Would the Gobi or hotkey drivers cause sudden lockups of the video driver if absent?

Can you download a Linux live cd and burn it to disk?

Do that and run it from the CD..See if the video problem goes away. If it does, you have a software issue, if not your video card is failing.

Do you still have the Win Vista COA on the bottom?

You could also re install Vista to test the hardware.

I do in fact have the vista COA on the bottom, but I do not have the disk for it. I am currently running this off an old disk of pinguy I had lying around. So far I haven't experienced a single crash.

What steps should I take to deal with software problems of this sort?

    How massive are your files?
Do you have another hard drive?
If you can get another drive, you can do a clean install of Vista on it.
You won't lose any files and you can be positive that you don't have a hardware issue.
You could put your existing drive in a usb case to access the data and slowly transfer it later if you wish..

apparently it is possible..They may mean dual boot..I'm not sure

I went to the setup screen (pressed f2 at startup) and I couldn't find anything messed up. However, I did note that the catalyst control center completely refuses to open. I'm tempted to ry some of the more aggressive scrubbing options here: Catalyst control center won't open? - Drivers - Windows 7 but am uncertain it would work as planned. Do you have any thoughts?

By forcibly uninstalling and reinstalling the ATI stuff I still have the same problem, but I did manage to get catalyst control center working. I noted this strange phenomenon, but am unsure as to what to do about it:

Edit: It might be just fine, I've seen reports of similar things.

I don't know if this will help, but it can't hurt to update your codecs..

I installed the new codecs, as I was doing so, there were a few registry errors corrected. Nothing's changes so far, but do you think a registry issue could be part of the problem?

I tried some compressed air on the fan earlier, though I feel air flowing out the back I do note that the fan speed tends to increase just before a crash. I'll test with a cold pack and see how that goes.

One other wrinkle, I ran that utility cap recommended and the next time my driver crashed, the following popped up:
    new intel.JPG

I have no idea what to make of it.

    try this again...

First is look in control panel under programs icon....Maybe you can uninstall Catalyst from there..

    http://support.amd.com/en-us/kb-articles/Pages/GPU57RemoveOldGraphicsDrivers.aspx#Win7

Yes , manually delete all ati folders after you uninstall from device manager....Run ccleaner after you are done deleting and uninstalling stuff.

I tried that, but the problem is that every time I uninstall the driver my computer stops detecting the hardware unless I tell it to refresh or reboot. Both have the same problem of automatically installing a new, crashy driver. Honestly with the driver uninstalled the computer hasn't crashed once. The resolution's a bit funky, but I'm considering just cutting my losses... I'd still be open to ideas though.
