Hey all,
So this is a story that shows some short-sightedness on my part. When the original hard drive failed on my CF52, I upgraded to a 500 gb hybrid drive which worked just fine, however through a download service as a student I got Windows 7 the 64 bit version and there do not seem to be any 64 bit drivers for the laptop's Mobility Radeon HD 3650 video card. The video driver has crashed several times while I've been trying to write this message and I'm having serious trouble getting anything done. I know I should have used the 32 bit version, but I don't know an easy way to install it without shelling out cash for a new OS and transferring a ton of data so I'm really lost as to what to do.
Am I the only one who's had a problem like this? Can anyone provide me with some advice?

Interesting.
Nice Machine.
Without making any particular recommendations.
it is common to take a step upwards as your machine is "not supported".

The easy way is 32 bit. The other way is drivers from/for a 64 bit 52M. I'm speaking of Panasonic drivers from the jp site.
Google "Panasonic driver cf-52 64 bit jp" and take a look around.
Others will chime in, like if your unit reports "not supported". That hasn't stopped us yet.

Welcome to the Panasonic Toughbook forum
Well you are right about one thing, you should have used the 32 bit version. The 64bit loves memory as in more than 4GB and I am not sure if your 52 can handle more than 4GB. There has been a lot of talk on here about 32bit and 64bit OS. Here is one of them http://forum.notebookreview.com/panasonic/753468-cf-30-mrk3-running-windows-7-64-bit.html
You should be able to find the drivers you need below...good luck

Keep us posted please. -

I fear I could not find the page you were referring to, or even the M model you were talking about. Could you please provide a direct link?
I tried them, unfortunately I still have the same problem. -

Perhaps this will help, the instructions for the 32 bit driver installation claimed:
1. Run "c:\util2\drivers\ativideo\setup.exe".
2. Reboot the computer.
3. [Start] - [All Programs] - [Accessories] - [Command Prompt](Selection
from right-clicking)
4. Selection"Run as administrator"
5. "cd \util2\drivers\ativideo" is input. Enter is pushed. 9 1/25/2010 Mandatory - Yes
Packages\Drivers\Display\W7
_INF\CL_88712.inf
.\bin\atisetup.exe -install
c:\program files\ati technologies\ati.ace\corestatic\
cli.exe start systemtray
6. It is input as "Def1stSS.js". Enter is pushed.
7. "Command Prompt" is shut by "x Button ".
8. Run [Start] - [All Programs] ->[Catalyst Control Center] ->[CCC -
Advanced]
9. [Graphics] tab of [PowerPlay] is selected.
10. Regarding [PowerPlay Settings], remove the check of [Enable
PowerPlay] check box.
11. "Apply" is pushed. "OK" is pushed.
However, when I reached step 6, the following appeared:
So i couldn't continue. Does that help? -

I tried installing just the video driver, but got the "this machine does not support" error. Should I try installing the other drivers to provide the necessary background, or is it a fundamental hardware thing?

What you need to do is unzip it., use a program like 7-zip from here 7-Zip (64-bit) - Free download and software reviews - CNET Download.com it's free. -

I'd recommend NOT installing the full driver package because it includes the Catalyst Control Panel that uses the MS .NET framework and is known to be troublesome. First delete the ATI driver and Catalyst. Then use WinZip or 7Zip to extract all the ATI driver files. Then MANUALLY load the just video driver from the extraction folder. Don't let Windows update it, keep the Panasonic version.
This worked good for me on a 52A that also has an ATI video board. Let us know if it works for you.Shawn likes this. -
How do you manually load the video driver? I ask, because I tried to use the instal wizard and it failed.

That is why we say... use WinZip or 7Zip to extract all the ATI driver files. Then MANUALLY load the just video driver from the extraction folder
http://download.cnet.com/7-Zip-64-bit/3000-2250_4-10905593.html -
I tried using the device manager targeting the bin folder extracted by 7Zip, but it claims that my driver is already up to date. Do I need to do some sort of deletion of the old driver? If so, how?
Also thank you for all the help you've given so far. it has provided me with much hope. -

Can you post a screen shot of your device manager so we can see what drivers you need?
 -

 -
Yes, as I said, the first thing is to delete your current video driver. Go to Device Manager, open the Display section, right-click on whatever shows there, and select Delete.
After that you should be able to *manually* load the saved Panasonic video driver . . . select Updte Driver, then Let Me Pick, then Have Disk, then Browse to the folder you save it in, drill down to the Driver folder if necessary. -

Looks like 98% is done and fine.
It appears that you have a WWAN card?

How-To Uninstall AMD Catalyst Drivers From A Windows Based System -

 -

Personally, I would worry more about installing the GOBI and Hotkey drivers.
Get rid of all the Yellow exclamation marks in device manager.
Once you have all of the drivers installed and working..... Make a backup of your drive...
Then I would concern myself with update / uninstall / change the video drivers if it gives you any trouble.
.. -
The thing is, I get an error message from win 7 stating that the video drivers crash approximately every 10 minutes. I can barely surf the web with this machine at this point and that's all a video driver issue. Would the Gobi or hotkey drivers cause sudden lockups of the video driver if absent?

I installed it and rebooted my computer. Nothing changed. I have posted a video of the issue to youtube, shot after installing the driver from the source you suggested:

Can you download a Linux live cd and burn it to disk?
Do that and run it from the CD..See if the video problem goes away. If it does, you have a software issue, if not your video card is failing.
Do you still have the Win Vista COA on the bottom?
You could also re install Vista to test the hardware. -
I do in fact have the vista COA on the bottom, but I do not have the disk for it. I am currently running this off an old disk of pinguy I had lying around. So far I haven't experienced a single crash.
What steps should I take to deal with software problems of this sort? -

I just watched your video and noticed something. If you want to make viewing this forum a lot easier you should change the style to "VB4 Default style" it will take about 90% of the adds/banners off the page. This can be found at the bottom of this page. Check out the picture below

Can I downgrade without losing my files or needing to do a massive transfer?
 -
 How massive are your files?
Do you have another hard drive?
If you can get another drive, you can do a clean install of Vista on it.
You won't lose any files and you can be positive that you don't have a hardware issue.
You could put your existing drive in a usb case to access the data and slowly transfer it later if you wish..
apparently it is possible..They may mean dual boot..I'm not sure

I'm still not convinced that it's a driver issue. Read this post.

Check your video card settings...
Is it set for an external monitor?
Is it set for dual monitors?
Check your BIOS settings..disable the external monitor.. -
I went to the setup screen (pressed f2 at startup) and I couldn't find anything messed up. However, I did note that the catalyst control center completely refuses to open. I'm tempted to ry some of the more aggressive scrubbing options here: Catalyst control center won't open? - Drivers - Windows 7 but am uncertain it would work as planned. Do you have any thoughts?

I don't know if this will help, but it can't hurt to update your codecs..
The bit about removing KB2670838 is very interesting...I have had missing buttons in Firefox for some time now. PC at work has issues with gmail....I uninstalled that update...We'll see if it helps...Code:http://www.codecguide.com/download_kl.htm
Here's a read on that update

I installed the new codecs, as I was doing so, there were a few registry errors corrected. Nothing's changes so far, but do you think a registry issue could be part of the problem?
 -

depends upon the error..
try this ccleaner,

I was just wondering how it worked, I am always looking for something better to use and never used it before. If Cap likes it...it must be good.
      -

Run it once a week, cleans up a lot of crap and fixes a lot of registry errors. I really like it!
CAP -

I tried some compressed air on the fan earlier, though I feel air flowing out the back I do note that the fan speed tends to increase just before a crash. I'll test with a cold pack and see how that goes.
One other wrinkle, I ran that utility cap recommended and the next time my driver crashed, the following popped up:
I have no idea what to make of it. -

try this again...
First is look in control panel under programs icon....Maybe you can uninstall Catalyst from there..
http://support.amd.com/en-us/kb-articles/Pages/GPU57RemoveOldGraphicsDrivers.aspx#Win7
Yes , manually delete all ati folders after you uninstall from device manager....Run ccleaner after you are done deleting and uninstalling stuff.
 -
I tried that, but the problem is that every time I uninstall the driver my computer stops detecting the hardware unless I tell it to refresh or reboot. Both have the same problem of automatically installing a new, crashy driver. Honestly with the driver uninstalled the computer hasn't crashed once. The resolution's a bit funky, but I'm considering just cutting my losses... I'd still be open to ideas though.
 -

we are making progress...PM me your email address. I will separate the 64bit driver from the ATI software..I will send you just the driver to install like Springfield suggested.

Here something I found while waiting for lunch...
Omega drivers for ATI...Some have reported to stop driver crashes.....
It's worth a try...I bet Ador has already tried them on something.......
