I just got a CF-29ETKGZKM . Just loaded winxp pro and all drivers,I have the bios set to auto . My problem is that I can not get the serial port to see anything. Did I miss a driver or a setting? All looks good in device manager and CDMA is working. Any thoughts? Thanks

If I remember back in the day with my CF-29 - (I used it to program Cisco equipment) I used COM2 through hyper terminal.

What are you using it for?

    Default is com-1 9600 baud
What are you connecting to the com port?
As Rob says you can look in HyperTerminal for the sentences

Are you sure everything is enabled in the BIOS?

I have rechecked that everything is is on in the BIOS, it was. I need the Serial port for updating shop equipment ,service programming of GM cars and trucks. I also use it for loading maps in to my handheld GPS.I will go into com 1 and set it at 9600 baud rate.Where or what is HyperTerminal ?

    Cut/pasted from Windows help:

Using HyperTerminal lets you connect to other computers, Internet telnet sites, bulletin board services, online services, and host computers, using either your modem or a null modem cable.

    Notes

To open HyperTerminal, click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, point to Communications, and then click HyperTerminal.
You do not need to use HyperTerminal to gain access to files and printers that are part of your local area network (LAN) or wide area network (WAN).
For information about using HyperTerminal, click the Help menu in HyperTerminal.

Essentially, it lets you communicate directly via your console with a serial port, and from that, to communicate with another serial device.

    OK,, try this.
Go into device manager and uninstall all the com ports that are showing.
Now reboot the computer and let Windows re-install them again.
I find that this helps most of the time, with serial port problems

What are you hooking up to the com port?
What application are you planning to use?

    biggamehunter,
Your not alone with this problem. My CF29 won't see my CF-VDW07 display when it's hooked up to the serial port either. I too have tried bios, uninstalling, drivers etc.
Sorry no real help but just to let you know your problem doesn't seem unique.

Just a thought, but have you checked all the pins on your serial connector to make sure none are bent or broken?

    Doobi,
I have, all OK. I did wonder if the port doesn't "open" if the 29 is running purely on battery though? I am having to use my 29 adaptor to power the 07 display as it doesn't have a battery and I don't want to buy one if the 07 is scrap, so when experimenting the 29 is on batt only and the A/C is running the 07 via a 28-29 adaptor.

    Mag-

Naah, I've NEVER heard of a laptop turning off the serial port when on battery; there's really no need, as it doesn't draw current unless something is hooked to it that does. I routinely use my TB to console into routers on battery power; so that doesn't make any sense.

As for the serial port on the 07 display - I'm not sure, but I believe that is not intended for connection to your laptop (since serial data rates are too slow) but rather is intended to connect an input device (like a barcode scanner or pen) which signal is then relayed through the WiFi link back to your laptop for input. Others on this forum will probably know better than I; but I know I've seen them used in this fashion in stores.

Re: VDW07 The Dwagon is, I believe, as usual correct! Have you looked into the manual? I keep meaning too, I'm just too busy, need to get back on the dredge, lots of free time!

The serial port is also used to update firmware on the VDW07 by connecting a crossover cable to a laptop which I think is what magneto is trying to do.

Ahhh... that makes sense. But doesn't that generally use a BIOS FLASH type app that doesn't actually negotiate the connection, but connects "blind" ?

I have used the serial port on my CF-28s, 29s and 30s while on battery. All worked well. Have you gone into the properties and made sure your FiFo buffers were set correctly? I had this issue one time while getting my diagnostic stuff working. Just make sure all the setting jive with what you have set elsewhere....

Go into Device Manager, then the port then properties then advanced (On the 2nd tab I think) Just check to see if all is well in there.

So, I'm taking it that Adrian is not going to be able to access his display via the serial port on the display in lieu of the wireless connection for other than firmware updates?

    Hi all,
Thanks for the info, much appreciated. I am trying to update firmware on an 07, which is supposd to be done via the serial port. The power suply question was raised as I have a weather station console on serial connection that won't communicate with a PC when running on batt only, given the trouble I'm having trying to update the firmware on the 07 it was worth asking so I could rule out that as the problem.

Has any one made up or know how to make up a diagnostic cable, that Panasonic refers to in the service manual? I am thing that there might be a problem from the mother board to the serial port .
