My "new to me" CF-28 MK2 has Win 2K, with Service Pack 2. I know Win 2000 goes up to Service Pack 4, should I take a chance and install, or will I lose a bunch of functions? Everything currently works, except the GPS, which is there, but has no software.

A Windows 2000? Isn't that a little too old? Anyway, you should definately download Service Pack 4. It'll improve security stuff... and you won't lose any features of the OS. I think Microsoft is on extended support phase for this OS, so it would be better if you upgrade to XP.

I don't mind that it's old. Right now, I'm dealing with 256mb memory, and a 30gig drive. Win XP keeps expanding. Win 2k will give me a bit of room to grow, for the time being. I'm more worried about security fixes. I also remember well just how much my XP desktop slowed down after Service Pack 2 was installed....

nah not really the first slipstream i ever did was to run winxp on 64mb ram, also it run perfectly.........
but anyway windows 2000 is a great OS dont listen to anyone sayings it old, it the best os for any hacker to use,
you can do sooooooooooooooooooooo much with that os........
pm me and i'll help with source codes if you like,
also service park 4 wont give you any problems, only thing there is a chance off is the bloody gps, turning into a mouse and jumping all over the screen,
but there is a hotfix for that, windows 2000 has all the full hotfixes in place incase you get into trouble installing service pack 4........

Or you could spend $40 on another 256MB of ram and do it up right!

    HI,
2000 is a great OS. I still use it at work on some older data aquisition systems. Go to SP-4 especially if you are on the WEB as you obviousy are.

When I recently bought my new/used CF-29 (1.2 GHz, 256MB) it was being sold with 2000. I wanted XP Pro because all my other home machines also run XP Pro. I was very concerned with maintaining software and driver compatability. I also was concerned about the size and speed of my CF-29 running XP Pro. With some trepidation, I had XP Pro SP-2 installed.

Much to my delight XP Pro runs fine on this machine. Stability has been a non-issue. All Panasonic software and hardware features are present and work properly. Speed is good; very snappy; better than I expected. Ron Johnson's shop did a great installation.

Knowing what I now know I have no problem saying I think it will run fine on your CF-28. And, don't forget XP really is a lovely OS and MS will continue support into the unknowable future.

As toughbook suggested, you really should max out memory. Memory is cheap and it is the best upgrade you can get. I'm going to max out my machine as soon as I return from my vacation.

Yes, I will max the memory first, and then I'll install a larger hard drive, likely going all the way up to 160gb. I see Western Digital will soon release a 250gb drive, but that's overkill for me. Rather, I wish I could go above 512mb, ya can't have enough memory.......and, memory is cheap these days. Thing is, I justified this Toughbook by rationalizing that I'd keep it simple for work, a minimum of programs, etc, and as I'm a self-taught computer geek, I still see lots of Win2k systems in use. Most businesses didn't see much point in upgrading to XP. That's my sole point here, right now, I don't need the complexity of XP yet. I had Win 95 for years, before that, Win 3.0. I made the jump to XP without a stop at Win 98, or ME. I want a CF-30, but it's far beyond my price range. I bought this 28 to see if I could make do for the time being. My 1 negative find, man is this thing HEAVY.......(but I do like the carrying handle, lol)

    HI mbstartech,
I have the same ambitions for my CF-29. I plan to keep it simple; lean and mean. Mine came with a 30G drive which I will probably keep. After all, this machine was bought with only one task in mind and that is for GPS work in my Jeep.

Trouble is I'm finding that this computer is a lot of fun to use for routine computing. I already have more software installed than I had planned. So, it's possible that a bigger HD is in my future.

It's not that I'm lacking computer power. I already have a Dell Latitude 2.2G, 1GB laptop and my home made 3.2G, 2 GB with 1TB hard drives desktop machine that I specifically designed for Photoshop and photo archiving. I really don't need the CF-29 for daily work. It's just that the CF-29 is so much fun to use. Oh, I already said that. Well....it is.
