Since we have an expert on this who frequents this forul I figured I would start this thread here instead of in the main forum.
I downloaded nLite and looked at what it can do. DJ... I have been reading about how to use this and am confused on a few things.
I think it's cool how you can check the boxes to remove stuff you don't need. I think the program does a pretty good job explaining what you should keep and what you could probably do without.
But... Where I am not clear is where to exactly get the hotfixes. The PDF file you emailed me shows the site where to get them... Do you have to download each individual file? Isn't there a batch file somewhere? If I have to download them all I might as well just download and load them after loading XP like I usually do.
Also... I haven't burned a CD yet. When I am starting out... And after selecting what I want installed and what I want left out... If I check that I want a bootable ISO file will it automatically burn one at the end of the sequence?
Thanks for your help.

i have a update patch which is like 106mb once compressed, i can give you that,
let me see about another site am sure i know another one where you can download from.......
once you have selected ur options it will burn you a bootable iso or a image depaneds on what you choose.....
just remeber to use a cdrw just incase you get anything wrong you can re-use the cd..... -
this is something i may be doing myself in a few days
Same as Toughbook, the thing of main concern is getting all the updates downloaded. Don't want to be downloading a million individual files, may as well let it windows update later.
if i have another xp install (TinyXP or similar) can i take the updates from on there somehow?
anyhow, it is a sweet day today, a rare occasion in the UK this year, i'm going outside. -
I have the update file so all you need is sp2 i have all the other updates which will make it a sp3 even though sp3 wasnt release i have the code files for the updates so know exactly what updates would have been with the sp3 patch..........
am trying to find a site where i can upload the sp3 pack i have compressed all the files to 106mb so all you would need to do is extract straight into ur streamed copy of xp.........
p.s anyone know a good site for me to upload it on........... -
I don't know anyone that allows that kind of storage space for free... I'll have to look around.
-
I have compressed it as much as i could to 100mb.....
-
I have a network storage drive that I think I can set it up with its own IP address. Then I can popst the IP address for all to use... Fort a little while anyway. Enough for us to post and swap stuff. It's a 250GB drive so it should be able to hold whatever we need. I guess there would be no need to secure it with a password since we would all be posting and downloading stuff to it. As long as the rest of my system remains secure I don't think that would be a problem. I don't think that by giving it its own IP address anyone could get into the rest of my system. I really don't keep anything personal on there anyway... Except the 16,000 songs I have...
-
ok thats great,
i have 6gb of windows software, and around 5gb of latest software,
plus if needed i have around 10gb of gps software -
that is gonna kill someones bandwidth lol
i'd probably choose the manhunt djacid down and copy his stuff the old fashioned way if it comes to 5+gig, but yeah stuff like hard to find drivers and the like would be dead handy, 100mb of windows updates in one file would also be nice.
ooh ooh, it is monday... maybe the red van will bring toys today. -
I'm setting up my FTP server now... 250GB of space. I'll allot it an IP address, logon and password and will PM it to whomever needs it for a short amount of time. That way we can swap everything we need to swap. I can also post the drivers, manuals and other Panasonic stuff for all who need it to download. Like I said... For a short amount of time. I've taken all my info off of it and transferred it to another drive temporarily so we can try to do this. I'll keep everyone posted!
-
nice one toughbook!!!!!
what about this to save everyone time,
everyone just update this tread with software there will like to use on there toughbook,
from games to multimedia software...... -
Um.... I think this website would frown on sharing Microsoft software... We probably shouldn't be discussing that. Hotfixes are okay since they are publicly posted. I don't want to get into trouble for hosting programs that people should pay for.
Let's keep it limited to slipstreaming. -
Well... For the past few hours I have been trying to set up my network storage drive for use over the internet. I could swear that I had it set up at one point but disconnected it because of the security concerns. Now I can't get it to work. On top of that is has a FAT 32 file system which won't allow large files anyway... Well, not without splitting it up. I'm going to look into my own server online.
-
on the fat32 system whats the largest file it will allow...........
-
Actually... It's 4gB... So that part should work. I was thinking it was less... Still... I can't get it to work...
-
thats alot of space.........
dont work to hard!!!!:twitcy: -
Djacid... I think I found a way for you to get me that 100mb file... Look here...
http://www2.bigupload.com/upload2.php?r=1&toolbar=
You can actually email it to me through this website for free... So they say! -
ok doing it now,
but pre site is the fastest upload, stand is only 46kb per sec,
so going to take about 5mins,
i put ur email in.........
not sure how it works but done it......
will let you know once done!!!! -
also am going to upload a Slipstreamed copy of xp, just for help incase ur not too sure about what stuff to take off, its already done with this iso file size is only 106mb so you got alot of space to put what ever you want onto the cd and burn
-
I just found a place.... www.ryanvm.net that has all the hotfixes banded together. My problem was that I was looking just for the hotfixes in one group... Not SP2! I have been playing around with nLite and I think it's cool how you can take stuff out of the WinXP CD... Like 100mb of languages! There is a ton of stuff that you can take out, presumably, to speed things up. I would imagine one could cut the size of the installation in half! We'll see.
-
DJ... Does this also include SP2? My copy of WinXP is Version 2002 with SP2 already included. Just curious... That's a big file!
-
nope doesnt have sp2,
but am in another 5mins the Slipstreamed WinXP file will be up it has been totaly stripped so you have a blank canvass to build on, also it has sp2 embeded but non of the hotfixes....
link will be up shortly -
How do I find out what has been taken out/left in? Will nLite tell me?
-
yes use the iso in the same way as you did with ur cd and you will notice that there wont be alot of stuff on there, just us and uk kyboard plus english...etc..........
this way once you use this file you will exactly no what stuff is important and needed on the cd and what stuff isnt..........
so next time when you try different os you will be perfect at it...........
files finish uploading,
link coming up now!!!! -
Does the first file you posted include XP?
EDIT - DUH... I get it now.... I just read your post... But if it has XP... Whose CD key is in there? Or will it ask for mine. PM me the answer if needed. -
damm the site crash on me after all that..........
-
i'll upload it again tomorrow for you,
am off tomorrow and not doing much,
pm me and let me know if you need any thing els and i'll upload it at the same time tomorrow(around midday)
 -
the first file are all windows updates and hotfixes till 2007........
saving you alot of time and also making ur version more secure then any retail version.......... -
Well... I stayed up until 1am trying to laod it... I'm trying again this morning. I really went in-depth with all the switches available in nLite. I saved a little more than half on the size of XP... Even with all the hotfixes installed! I installed it... I figured it was a new hard drive and since I did the deep format last time... I just did the quick format this time. It was going very well... Then it hit the "9 minutes left" and just stayed there. The DVD drive stopped and even the hard drive turned off! It was just stuck there!
So oI'm starting from scratch this morning. If it doesn't work I'll burn a new image. I did just a regular CD... If I need to reburn I'll do it on a RW CD...
Any thoughts on what caused it to hang at the 9 minute mark??? -
With regards to the hotfixes you sent... Were these ALL of the hotfixes? I noticed on a few other sites that someone went through to pull out the ones that had been superceded by other hotfixes. (I'm not sure if it matters.)
Just curious... -
just correct me you are making this cd for ur toughbook and were installing it onto ur toughbook,
if it was makde for ur toughbook and you have taken all desktop setting out and then try to install onto ur desktop you wont get very far, also vice-versa if made for desktop and install onto laptop.....
am trying to upload the other file but it doesnt let me do it,
after it uploads it just gives me a error!!!! -
I think that site only allows you to upload so much data in a given time period. You may have to wait... Or find another place.
Yes... The CD is for the Toughbook... And ONLY the Toughbook. I am re-installing it now. 32 minutes to go... (Keep your fingers crossed!) -
Let me know how long it takes to load,
the vista cd i did yesterday took me half a hour including all software like office,etc....
if you tweak it just right ur install should only take 15mins including all software you require......
*GOODLUCK* -
Hmmmm... It's stuck at the "9 minutes left" mark again! Any ideas what I screwed up to make it stop here?
The bar shows "Saving Settings" -
Not only has it stopped at 9 minutes left to go... The hard drive isn't even spinning! What's the deal?
I'm going to try loading regular XP and see if it takes it. -
did you get a erro code,
if did paste that here and i'll let you know what the problem is,
from guessing it could be anything from a setup file which was removed or 2 files installing at the same time.....
am trying another thing i have log my ip out of the uploading site and trying again if it still doesnt work with a diffrent ip then i'll have to clear my cookies..etc and change ip and try again..... -
No error code... It just stopped. I'm thinking I deleted something I shouldn't have out of the install pack. I'll install regular XP and try again. I love nLite... Pretty cool.
-
if i manage to upload this file it will solve ur problems if not then i'll see about writting up things you should remove,
dont worry about ur hard drive once the software stop ur hard drive will stop to save power if theres no ativities.... -
here you go it worked......
Slipstreamed1_winxp.Rar by Bigupload.Com
enjoy!!! -
I'm halfway through the download... Thanks for your help!
Well... XP loaded up fine as I figured it would. The problem is that I had all my buring stuff on the Toughbook so I need to set it up on my desktop again when I finish downloading the 2nd file.
What is the difference in the 1st and 2nd file? -
the first file i uploaded is all the updates you will ever need so installing software and getting problems with windows and hotfixes is not a issue anymore once you added those files to ur streamed version of xp....
the 2nd file is a stripped down version of xp, nothing included no drivers, add it too nlite as the os file and just add programs and drivers you require also add the 1st file when it says updates and you will have the most perfect copy for ur cf-28 ever made and check the speed out as well will install fast on any pentium1 and will run like a p3, so it should be perfect...... -
It looks like more hotfixes... So which one do I use? The file from yesterday or the file from today. The 2nd file doesn't look like an XP file... Just more hotfixes to add to the first.
-
the 2nd file is a iso image once you extract it with winrar you should be left with a bare iso called Slipstreamed winxp.........
-
Okay... I opened the wrong file...
So... What do I do with this? nLite doesn't recognize it. Do I still copy my WinXP CD over to C:/XPCD? Where do I use the ISO file?
Or do I just burn it to a CD and go from there? -
Also... If I run into something that you left out... Say... support for digital cameras or something... Will the installation prompt me to enter my original CD to get the drivers off?
-
I take it the ISO image includes all the hotfixes? Will I still need to input my CD key?
-
firstly the everything is removed from this version main reason you can keep this as ur main iso and alway use it to build version for pc/desktop, i have removed all drivers and support, drivers you have for ur cf-28 just add them plus the software you require,
another thing with the iso make a folder called windows or what ever you want to name it then right click onto the iso file and extract it too the new folder created,
now go into nlite and locate the folder as ur winxp file and away you go,
also you can explore ur own winxp cd and see stuff you might want and just add to the new folder.....
remeber this copy was made in 2006 so you will need to add those updates you downloaded in the first file too make this a futrue proof copy but if you rather not it isnt such a big deal..... -
Ok... It's burning now... I put in my key instead of yours.
I'll try this install for a while. Based upon what happens I'll make my own copy and play around with the settings.
I'll need to install Office 2003 but will leave off a lot and do the minimum install. I'll also delete a lot of the fonts when I install Photoshop. (I MUST have my Photoshop on there!)
I'll keep you posted! -
how about a minum install of office2003 i have already done that if you want to try it let me know........
