I used the "direct burn" function to burn the ISO to CD... Is that what you do? I reduced the installation by 140mb... I took out a lot of junk that I don't need. We'll see how it goes.

I found out what I did wrong on your copy... I just created the ISO and put it in a file. It didn't burn to the CD. So on mine I just used the direct burn method and will go back and make an ISO of mine to store for the future, if needed.

    I'll keep you posted.

Well... My version worked. I'll play around with it.. Install my wifi and toughbook drivers and check out how fast it is. I know what I did wrong with the version you sent me so if this one is too slow I'll reinstall with the other version.

My Fn keys don't work still... So either they aren't controlled by the BIOS (whick I thought they were) or I need to go back in and check my keyboard connections.

think my Fn keys are bios, they seem to be independent of the OS
    thats on a v3.00L12 bios.

Well I just got a surprise... I was activating WinXP and it wouldn't take! It said that I had exceeded the amount of times that I could install it! I had to call Microsoft to get another key! The computer on the phone handled it all and it successfully took. The computer asked me if I had any hardware changes such as hard drive or motherboard. I imagine it read some codes out of my laptop and it didn't jive with what they had on file for the COA that came with the laptop.

It seems to be working so far. Now I just need to reinstall some programs and see how much faster it is.

One thing though... On my slimmed down version of XP... When I plugged in my USB key it asked that I install my original copy of XP to get some drivers off of it. I imagine I'll run into that every now and then since I've pared it down a bit.

Well... It would appear that something isn't right. When I go into device manager it takes forever to open up. When I installed the touchscreen driver it came up with all sorts of warnings about installing the original WinXP CD if I wanted to maintain stability of the PC. I didn't do it just to see what would happen. I haven't speeded it up... I'VE SLOWED IT DOWN! DJ... is your version like that?

well for sorting out vista you'll need vlite, also about ur fn key did you install the hotkey drivers????
the bios has a option but it is only to disable the fn+7/10 keys nothing els,
when you press fn what happends???????

about my copy well there worked fine but i had problems with the gps with winxp also i took the option to upgrade of it as well so now doing another one,
as just finished installing win2000 so going to upgrade that to winxp and see if it sorts out the problem if not next time i'll remove the drivers for the mouse in question with the gps and see what happens....

did you use 2 cd to make ur final iso image??????
as you know you can only use 1 cd to make it as it will give you alot of problems, also did you take support out for touch screen mouse when you make ur version.......

dont worry about i probaly made around 10 version before i was completely happy the first one didnt even boot caus i remove the boot sector............... :swoon:

Well glad to hear that screwing up is all part of the game!

I am starting to have problems with the stability. My network connections won't stay open. I think I'll try your version. You seem to be happy with it.

Have you ever run up against the activation thing I mentioned? I'm almost afraid to keep playing with it for fear that Mr. Gates won't let me activate it next time I try. Their phone system gave me a new key but I'm not sure if that is only good for one time or resets the whole thing so I have more installations left.

    You got any idea?

That's part of the reason every other computer I own is a Mac. I only bought the toughbook and installed windows so I could program the fuel injection computer I built.

Shame this doesn't have a P4, or I'd have Mac OS X running on another partition ;)

I was actually thinking about trying Unix. They say it's smokin fast and can do anything that Windows can. They have programs to open/edit Word docs, browsers, etc... And it's all free from what I've read. I might just play with that tomorrow!

    Night!

i personaly dont listen to a work what the company's say about software requirement,
if there say this version is only for a p4 i will go out my way just to make sure it will work on a p2,
abit of hard work and you can do what ever you pls,
i installed vista ultimate edition on the toughbook the other day and its running fine without any problems only problem i have had was trying to fix the modem drivers and gps(wandering mouse), but apart from that it worked perfectly and what microsoft say you need at least -
    Windows Vista Ultimate
    Recommended system requirements
    1 GHz 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) processor

    1 GB of system memory

40 GB hard drive with at least 15 GB of available space

Support for DirectX 9 graphics with:

    WDDM Driver

128 MB of graphics memory (minimum)

    Pixel Shader 2.0 in hardware

    32 bits per pixel

and i dont even have half the ram nor the video card.....

    yep i hate sys requirements
i remember sticking my drive ins someone elses machine so i could install windows (back in they days they had the system test)and then put it back in my machine which was under spec.
generally it dont matter... except some games. When i have the recommended spec (not minimum) and it plays like crap -ooh that annoys me.

Well... I'm trying my last try at slipstreaming. My first couple of tries were less than spectacular. This time I just got rid of a lot of space taking crap... Like all the languages I don't need. All the games are gone. The keyboard setups are all gone except english (US & UK)... There were a few other tweaks I made but none that should cause problems like the last few times.

When I get it running I'll load Office (stripped) and Photoshop. I'll delete a lot of the dupe looking fonts too. I'll have to study to see what the fonts are that XP needs for sure.

    I'll keep everyone posted.

if you fail at slipstreaming, i've checked out a recent (but not very latest) tinyXP
it does now have laptop support, and though not totally slipstreamed it is heavily cut down... it seems a quick fix and is pretty close to stripped for no work.
well recommended for anyone not wanting to go make their own i'd say.

well i can proudly say i have finished the perfect version of winxp, this was desinged by my mate for dual processor support, but as i found the cd after ages i tried it and nothing kept getting a BSOD, so i unpacked it stacked it and hacked it and then started rebuiling it step by step and now can says it worked perectly, also it has alot of software included from businees realted to suffing the web to games all the extra software was made through a seperate gui software meaning once windows has installed the secound program will start it self and you just have to click on the software you required and press install and just sit back....
i have only kept toughbook supported drivers by windows and nothing els, also it has added drivers for wireless and atheros min pci card, reason i put them on caus everyone here has bought a pci card,
once installed you can use it straight away and start surfing the net, i have left a gps driver in there which isnt for the cf028 but is for a similar gps device which runs with a braud rate of 4600/4800,
if you do perfer the panasonic drivers you can always update the drivers,
this cd will work on any cf-28......
runs perfect on a pentium 1 system and really fast on my toughbook....
    System required ment
    Pentium 1 with 166mhz.
Ram requirement 64mb all software on disk support 64mb ram.
Harddrive requirement windows folder will only use 384mb of space.
Windows Install time 14mins(default software) 27mins(full software).
    Windows Startup time 13/18sec's
    Shutdown time 8.6secs

how about releasing it as a torrent? Then we all could download it and share it at the same time.

    Hello,

I am new here. Been having BSOD with several different error codes. Most lead to drivers or memory. Tried to run it all down. Can't get a handle on it. GGGGGGGGGRRRRRRRRRR Although after doing several different things scans chkdisk defrag sfc turning off one of the two anti virus I had running and some more clean up there has not been another BSOD for over 4 days now.

My machine is a Toughbook CF-50 XP Home. The guy I bought the machine from just sent me a clean hard drive to swap out with the HD in my machine. Then load a clean install of XP on it and see if this solves the problem. Sigh

I am more than novice on this. I have never instaled an OS before. I posted on this thread because it seems to deal the most with loading a clean install on XP on a Panasonic.

I have been reading about a Clean XP install and saving the drivers. This is what is confusing me. The drivers are not on the WinXP Home disk? If I save the drivers on this machine that might not be running just right will it save the drivers right or will be corupting the new drivers too?

I have another ToughBook but it is OS 2000. I could go get the drivers using it if that would be better and burn them to disk??

One more. Getting these drivers. Are they on a Panasonic site I just click on download drivers or do I need to know what drivers to down load. YIKES I am scaring the heck out of myself wondering if I can do this.

    Thanks for any direction.
    Chris

well, installing drivers after a new install of windows can always be hard, specialy with a toughbook,
there are some laptops that wont need any drivers and work straight away,
but with the toughbook, you will need some drivers,
just look around on the panasonic website and get all the drivers you needs,
it isnt that hard if you know what you doing..............
to save time download all the drivers and keep em on a usb stick for any future installs.............
will you be installing winxp on both toughbooks or just the one??????????

I will be installing winxp on just the CF-50. The 72 is great with 2000 so if it ain't broke............... It has all of the cememtery books and maps on it and that is mostly all I do with it.

I was reading and looking on a panasonic site last night for the drivers. When I filled in for the CF-50 and XP drivers it said not available?? This machine was 2000 to begin with. Hummmmmmmm

I would be fine with 2000 back on the CF-50 if that would be the easier way to go. Believe me I do not know what I am doing but willing to learn. I am much more comfortable laying rail road ties into the ground or hauling rocks, grooming dogs, mosaics anything but computers. We live in the middle of nowhere so I have to do this myself. I enjoy a challange.

Maybe I am on the wrong Panasonic site?

The guy I got the 50 from sent me a disk of drivers. But if he just copied those drivers from this machine then it might still have the bad driver copied to it and I am right back where I started.

He used this machine for several months. Then pulled his information/stuff off if it and sent it to me. Right off I started getting the BSOD events. I, who knows nothing, am guessing he might have somehow removed part of a driver or? when he removed his stuff of the machine. Why I tried sfc.

This is where I was looking for the drivers. Is there another place?

    http://www.tcc.toughbook.com/

    Thanks Chris

Thank you DJACID. Today is going to be the day. Plans were suddenly delayed due to my kitty needing doctoring, he got beat up by another cat, and lack of sleep to that. Everything is saved off the old drive. Here I go.
