OK, I have the smart card reader option in my 31. I don't own any smart cards, I don't even know what I would use one for. Log in security is the main use on a TB I'm guessing. All of our access control stuff uses prox cards now. Does the reader in my 31 read RF smart cards as well as contact cards? Does it "pop" out to make room for an <alternate device with enhanced coolness factor>? Just curious.

The SCR in the Toughbooks is contact cards only, usually for access in one form or another as you say.

Contactless smart cards (or alternatively proximity cards) usually use RFID, which is only available on certain Toughbooks.
