    So are these typically pretty beat up and models you should avoid?

    If you do find one that isn't beat up can this be an issue:

    The "custom bios" has the HDD controller permenantly set in "compatible" mode. You cannot install the AHCI driver. There may be other custom settings.

    I have one and it is in excellent condition with approx. 11000 hrs in the bios.
