Hi Guys,
Ive read through the sticky concerning th cf-29 after market gps and there are still a couple of questions I would like to ask.
The first one is has anyone tried using the wwan sled as base for the em-408
engine. The reason for this is I cant see the connections on the cn 18 let alone solder to them. I think Im going blind.Too many visits to Amsterdam![]()
The second is the cable to the geohelix antenna. Is it the outer from the cable thats soldered to one of the four grounds on the board and the centre of the cable to the bottom middle. Im not sure if pics were posted but if they were then there not there know.
Oh something I almost forgot. On the cn 18 is it numbered from left to right or right the left.
Cheers in advance
Das
P.S. Ive just mananged to get the em-408 engine in Germany from Omtek for 22 euros and the Geohelix for 24 including postage. Sometimes you find a penny and it's stuck to a five pound note

You should spend some more time reviewing both the GPS installation procedures for the CF-29 AND the CF=-28... I think it will help you understand a little better.
You don't need to solder to CN18... Use a 40 conductor ribbon cable and split the ends off and solder to the ends of the ribbon cable... That is MUCH easier to do.
The GPS antenna lead needs to be snaked down the inside of the LCD lide where the stock antenna lead goes. You'll see where. Use RG-174 for best performance. The center conductor gets soldered to the center of the antenna. The other braided wire gets soldered to the ground on the antenna. Then you will need to solder a right angle MMCX connector to the other end to plug into the EM-408. It's actually a fairly easy but time consuming thing to do. I've done it about 12 times now in a CF-29 and it still takes me several hours to get it all fabbed in. -
Hey TB,
I wanted to use the original wireless antenna cable. I thought that was possible, Because I have just nicked the full wireless system from my missuses cf-29 1,3mhz. The attenna cable follows the normal route through the pass through and to the sled holder. But when you say the other cable is better then I would redo it.On the pictures from ohlip is the ribbon cable not visble . I know this sounds like work but I would rather try using the 50 pin plug from the sled. I so I will publish everything but on my web site cos I have the feeling photos are not archived here. After looking through the cf-29 sticky ohlip wrote "here are the photos but there was no photos attached. By the polled sticky from caddilac there are photos but from the original gps sled\board. Nah I give it a go and see what happens.
Cheers

Sorry! man, I have to delete the photo to give way to another picture. BTW, Regarding your question with the existing cable, Yes! you can use that as a matter of fact I reused those cable to my previous mod.. cf-29(I think 3 of them). It gives you more easy job, just connect the antena at the other end and let as-is from the pass through connector and if you don't want to use the sled take it out and replace the existing u.fl connector from passthrough to the end of cable by an MMCX connector for em408 I have a write up on the after... gps on cf-29 using the existing cable and for a new one. Pls. review those write up.
Also there are two types of aftermarket installation for cf-29; One is without the sled or daughter board and the other one is using the sled. Pls. review all details and pinout. They are out there FYI.

Hey All,
Cheers ohlip your the man.The geo helix is already added. ( I will put a link here when gps engine is fitted , a few photos I have).I managed to use the cable without cutting of the plug ( ariel end). Not yet seen here. I hoping to fit the gps engine by using wireless switch.I sure this works when it detects power drain.I will inform in the future.
Cheers

Hey,
Just found out that navolock in Germany have stopped doing the em-408 engine. I had to reorder mine from sparkfun in the USA. After I spoke to Navilock they said there was no following model. They tried offering anouther model but as I explained what you guys were upto here in the forum and my needs for a model with an external antenna the answer I got was ummm ok and have a nice day. Is this the same all over?.
cheers

Screw Sparkfun... Go to www.usglobalsat.com and order!
But yes... Other models will fit and work well. The 5-6 connections are interchangeable with pretty much all GPS engine that use 3V-5V. You don't need the included GPS patch antenna on the EM-408.. It's useless.... You just need the MMCX connection so you can hook up the external GPS antenna. -
What GPS board are they using in the cf-30? can that be used for the cf-29?
Sorry, but another question about gps
