Hi, I'm sorry if I missed this in other threads, but I could easily find an answer.

My CF-29 has a strange affliction: its speaker sometimes starts to crackle at random times, quite loudly. Adjusting the volume or muting it seems to make no difference (I'm on Ubuntu 11.04 and Windows XP, the problem occurs in both), but playing some sound, for instance a Youtube movie, does: the sound plays fine after a loud-ish click, and the crackling stops. Usually, it will behave after I've stopped the sound. That seems to preclude a technical malfunction.

It's a minor annoyance, but I'd like to fix it if I can. Does anyone have suggestions?

May I know how you installed the XP OS. Is it by recovery disk or just an oem xp disk? It happen when there is a mismatch on sound driver. Check if you have the right driver for your unit.
