OK, I finally received my extra HDD caddy yesterday. It's so purrttyyy![]()
I am confused. Shutup. I want to run W7, but I can't decide which HD to put it on. I have an Intel SSD-EXTREME 32GB installed now running my Vista, Outlook, and some other crap. I still have 7Gb remaining on this drive.
I also have a 320Gb Hitachi 7200K. I am going to put that one in my new caddy. I was thinking about installing the W7 RC onto that one with all the CF-30 drivers, etc. Sort of clone what I have on this drive and see how I like W7. I am regretting only getting the 32Gb drive, but those things are expensive. I really don't like watching how much space I have, however it has kept me much more disciplined in what I download. No B.S on this one here baby!
The issue I have is that I have a program that I have to LOAD for work. I don't think security wise they will allow or have allowed anybody to have 2 of these programs running. So which one do I put it on? I guess I can just wait and see how W7 does and I might just stick with the Hitachi and sell the SSD. Though it is a sweet little drive............Who wants one?????????????
Last question...........When I go to swap the caddy around do I have to remove the battery as well as shutting it down, or is shutting it down good enough?
-
IMHO.... Go with the 320GB and don't look back. Then you can give me your 32GB SSD drive!
No... You do not have to take out the battery to remove the hard drive caddy.... But it should be shut down entirely and not merely in Hibernation or Suspend mode. I know this is a "DUH!" type thing... But people are creatures of habit and sometimes don't think about that. -
You should not have any trouble with RC7 - it is actually a more developed OS than Vista ever dreamed of being, not just a "decr@pified" version.
If you're using Vista, you can expect to gain back about 30% of your memory space no longer wasted in unnecessary processes, and you'll find that the network implementation is MUCH More stable.
I've been beta-ing it for several months now, and I DO believe it shows some promise. Not enough to pay the exorbitant prices M$ wants for what really should be considered "XP Rev. 3.0", but definitely some promise.
I would get into it now with at least one or two machines; it's good until March 1, 2010 (The time at which it starts shutting down every 2 hours, then on June 1, 2010 it goes completely duff) and like it or not, you NEED to know how it works if you're going to be doing ANYTHING int the IT Industry. You're going to be stuck with it, like it or NOT, so might as well learn about it while it's still FREE.

No, please... no autographs... -
Rick, I loaded it all up. I have to admit I like it. There are some really nice features they have added to it, from Vista that is.
It is good to hear that I don't have to remove the battery. I am having an issue though, and I feel like a rock for asking this, but do I have to go and download all the drivers from Panny? It grabbed some from the internet, but like the Fn buttons are not displayed, they are working though, mouse pad, Brecal, and some other ones. Take the battery Recal for example, that is a very simple driver. I downloaded it, but the OS has no idea what to look for since it's not in the device manager. What is the name of the driver I have to load for it to see it? I can't just put in my Vista Rec Disk then it would want to load Vista?
I'm confused
Make me a deal on the drive. I KNOW you have some toys! I have only had it for about 2 weeks. -
mnementh, I just missed your reply......
If you have been playing around with it, can you do me a huge favor? I will put you and your family on the " Do not **** with list" with the SS.
Read my latest post and shoot me the links to what all I need to download and stuff! I will be forever in debted to you! -
Just FYI, W7 RTM is on MS' internal shares and the TechNet version should be coming out in the beginning of August.
-
I downloaded mine from Technet last night. What different one are they coming out with next month?

I don't get what you're asking for; it looks like you said you've already loaded up Win7RC... As for downloads... well, just remember that RC7 has a VERY functional "Compatibility mode" for almost ANY executable, driver installs included.
After that, you just need to know that pretty much any apps that run on Vista will run on it, plus a LOT of legacy6 stuff too. Implementation of their much-vaunted "Virtualization Engine" technology is MUCH better than Vista - this is the result.
The page for RC7 is here:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-7/get/download.aspx
But HURRY - it'll only be available for another month, then you'll have to brave the torrent feeds and shady mirror sites and HOPE you get a clean copy.

TechNet usually has the toys before the public gets to play with them. So. In a few weeks, you'll probably find the "final" version of W7 on TechNet. -
Let me try to explain this a different way with the problem I am having.
I loaded up RC7, all is good on the OS side. However, I don't have the Panasonic specific functions. The display, sound, all that kind of stuff does not show up on my screen when i turn the volume up for example. Is it all the HotKey Function drivers I need to download? If so, once I have them downloaded I don't see the program to update the driver. I guess I don't understand how to install those programs, I just know how to update the drivers but how you can you updaate a driver if you don't have the program to start with. Man, am I confused now!!! -
I'm sorry Toyo; I don't actually have any Toughbook that new, so I don't know exactly where on Panny's website to look for the drivers you need. I know others on here DO, and will happily point you in the right direction.
I believe that the CF-30 did have models which shipped with Vista, so once you get there, START by trying the Vista drivers; they should work as-is, and no monkeying around with "Compatibility Mode" needed.
If not, get the XP drivers; then right click on the install executable, and a drop down will come onscreen. Select "Run in compatibility mode" from that, and USUALLY, is will run without fault and you can use those drivers.

w00t... W7 is officially RTM!

Hopefully panasonic will update the drivers for the newer toughbook models with w7 type drivers where applicable

I'm with you there Alex. So far I am amazed at the stuff that's in W7, and how stable it is. I am going to call Panny today about the problems I am having with getting some things loaded. I emailed them a couple of weeks ago inquiring about the compatibility. They replied that I should be able to run every program just as if I am running my Vista.

Well, it hasn't yet been RELEASED - the RTM Version has been APPROVED, but we won't actually be SEEING it until the first week of August. Of course the BIG BOYS ALREADY have it; they're the ones who've been hammering out the dents in the RC versions to come up with the RTM version.
If you're a hardware or software producer, M$ has a website to to help you prep for Win7; they give links to developer tools and resources:

The CF-18 MKIII runs the Windows 7 beta really well.
Unfortunately the CF-18 MKII isn't supported.
