Can someone tell me how to seat this key properly, it's driving me mad :D

Just got my first Toughbook on Friday. CF19 MK6 with 8gb RAM, 9/10 condition for €200. Quite happy overall with the deal.

Looking forward to playing with it but trying to get this damn shift button to sit down seems hopeless. Do the 2 tiny white hinged bracket-y things need to sit flat??? The right side seems to naturally sit on top of the left. The button will clip down a bit but it's always wonky.

If it does not snap into place, then the clips are broken.

Sorry about the dust. It's been hiding in the shop.
The right white bit sits on the left.

Note the clips in the key bottom. with keyboard vertical (numbers toward floor) attempt to latch the black forks onto the white bits. Gently align then mash down fairly hard directly over black clips when they are in line.

One of your black clips may be missing....can't tell from the image.

I just took my key off my 19 and his looks broken to me. Not sure how to put this but here it goes....the white bits look broken or not lined up...the white bits on the left needs to be lined up with the right white bits. You may need to snap out another key to see what I mean

Thanks Shawn. Looks much better now. Not sure if that's the problem or not but they are not lined up even.

Tried to get some better light shots. Camera refused to focus up close:

Still hard to make out, but one of the nibs on the bottom black clip has broken. Annoying. Guess I'll have to try find a replacement key. Could be a lot worse I suppose!

Possibly might need a new one. I’ve never seen replacement keys before

If you can't find one let me know. I am going to check today and see what it will cost to ship one overseas for you.

If you're up for a little microsurgery, an Exacto Knife blade and some thin CA would work. (Super Glue)

A bit of a hassle but it would make you feel good to fix the key. :)

Makes economic sense only if you already possess the knife and the glue and if replacement keys are not readily available.

Meh. Cf 18 and cf 19 keyboards are easy to find. Swap the whole thing out and be done.

I am cranky and overwhelmed at the moment. My responses will reflect this...sorry.

Oh wow, that's very kind of you. No need to go to any trouble on my account. I checked laptopkeys.com and they only want $7.70 total so I might be OK.

Haha. I actually did this before I left work! Got a fine tweezers to move the piece back into place then drowned it in glue and soaked up the excess. Gonna try it again in the morning.

Was thinking of maybe getting the rubber keyboard as well. I will be using this laptop on the factory floor and there's a LOT of dust and dirt.

If you have any problems getting one let me know. I checked the price of shipping today and it's under $3.00

Just so you know it takes a while to get use to the rubber keyboard. You need to push harder on the keys. I am a slow typer so it's not bad for me but for someone that types fast it will take a while to get the feel of it.

So laptopkey came through with the replacement.

Only thing is I haven't tried to fix it yet because my rubber board from China arrived too.

I installed it easy enough but I've been hammering F12 can't get the backlight to work. Is it possible I installed the cable wrong?

Do you have the link from where you bought it. I noticed some sellers from China are selling rubber keyboards BUT they are not backlight.

You might have the smaller cable not seated properly or you might have the cable upside down. The small cable gives you lights

Ok this might be a stupid question but this has happened before. You are holding the function key down while pressing f12....right

As tough' said don't forget the FN key.
The backlight is very dim compared to most other laptops' backlit keyboards so it may actually be illuminated. Try it in a very dark room ..

Oh I was using FN yeah.

I reinstalled it and even turned the ribbon around the other way just in case but no good. I know it was the right way around because I can see where the contacts go.

Looks like I just got a dud. Oh well, it was only €20.

I was afraid that might happen when I noticed it was from China. This has happen before to a few members and you really can't return it because it will cost more than it cost you to buy.

Nice...you will like that better. I hated the rubber keyboard. I just installed one in my 19 too.
