What's SBC?
-
Southwest Bell Company.
They are ex phone company units that were mounted in hot trucks baking away and being abused by employees. -

You must admit it does sum it up 85% of the time
A few months ago a few members bought the tiger one's and had a lot of problems and returned them. They had a cheap paint job, touch not working and battery no good.......to name a few things. -

Only the retired SBC Mk3 CF-29HTM50BM units have this feature.
BTW: these units are "Touch Screen"; it just doesn't usually work. -
Then it's the I needa quad core. A guy I work with wants laptop for him and his grandkids to use, and surf the net with. I am thinking a CF 51 for a fair price. When I'm done talking he asks about upgrading to a quad core. I tried to explain that he doesn't need a quad core, but I could see his eyes glaze over. UGH..I gotta hand it to the marketers. How many cores do you really need to run Firefox? People like that are usually a service after the sale nightmare. Calls every other night asking about every issue possible. Best to send im to Best Buy in the first place! He can buy that mystical $200.00 quad core from them and get the live in the basement free service tech for the entire life time they own the machine.

Tell em you'll fix the screen for $350.00

My other favorite conversation. "I saw a new netbook for $198.00, with the look, how can you charge more for an old slow laptop."
I try to tell them go ahead stare at a 8" netbook screen for more than 15 minutes. Maybe when they were 25yrs old, but sure not at 40 or older. -

I got one for a friend and posted about it a while back. So far so good. I did bring the memory up to 1gb. The touch screen works fine. All the doors worked well though said friend has since torn off the power cable door. The track pad was clearly used a lot but still works. The battery is only good for about an hour. All and all it seems like a better deal than many of the CF-29's I've seen on eBay. My friend doesn't really need the durability of a 29 but something like the 51 or a Dell ATG would probably have been fine. My biggest concern was dust, not dropping. Then again, he loves having the same thing as the fire department so the $380 (CF-29 + memory) Toughbook was a great buy for him.
Yes, it does lower the prices for other sellers but conversely it opens the market for buyers, such as my friend, who couldn't spend more than $500 on a computer and who may not have thought about a TB because, really, they aren't on the shelf of every computer store.
BTW, I'm taking advantage of the cheap W8's that are killing the used prices for those machines. -

I did though it hasn't shipped yet. I think they still have some in stock. I have seen a number on f-bay with various stories about how they got them. I do hate seeing that sort of thing where people who would like to get in on a good deal can't because someone else bought a bunch for resale. But that is life. The seller, Toughbookonline, clearly is not used to selling to the unwashed masses.
