    Hi everyone - I love the Toughbooks & am new to the forum. I have found the MK designations for the 29's but not for the 18's. Could someone please share these with me? In fact, if you have them, for the 27's as well!

    BTW, I have installed Ubuntu 8.10 on a CF-29F and it works wonderfully - very easy install.

    Thanks for your help! Susan

    I have a new interest in CF-18s so I have done some research. It seems the marks are determined by processor, so although I have never seen reference to any of the bracketed letters anywhere except in the Toughbook Configurator:
    MK1=18B(C) 900mhz
    MK2=18D(E) 1.1ghz
    MK3=18F(G,H) M733
    MK4=18K(L) M753
    MK5=18N(P) M753
    Not sure what happened with MK4 and 5 but that should be pretty close. Some but not all of the bracketed letters are listed as "Federal only" in the configurator.
    CAP, Seeking further clarification if anyone knows.

    The MK5 has an embedded TPM 1.2 while MK4 has none even on CF-29. Thats the only thing I know.

    In the MK5's they added TPM 1.2 module. Other than that is is the same as a MK4.

    Also I believe that EVDO rev.0 was introduced at MK3. You can ad EVDO to any of the marks but you will loose bluetooth if you add EVDO to a MK2 and below. The EVDO board uses the bluetooth wire as an antenna. You have to swap in a new daughter board and add the EVDO sidecaps on the LCD.

    I looked into this as i wanted to add EVDO to a MK2 cf-18 and i wanted bluetooth as well but found out that you cannot do both.

    Edited to reflect new Marks

    James,
    My new (not here yet) CF-18 MK2 shows both Verizon EVDO and Bluetooth in the Configurator, CF-18DHAMBKM. I'll let you know when it gets here.

    No yours has 1xrtt verizon. It is CDMA not EVDO. It is the technology before EVDO. The speeds are very slow like 144kbps up and down.

    You may get lucky though as the last few 1xrtt modems i got were still activated and worked just very slow.

    Here are your specs:

    Pentium M 1.1GHz(Centrino), 10.4" Touch Screen Hi-bright Transmissive XGA, 40GB HDD, 256MB RAM, Intel 802.11b+g WLAN, Verizon 1xRTT NO VOICE,Dual pass through antenna, WIN XP

    You can add EVDO but you will loose bluetooth. It costs about $250 without the modem to add EVDO to the CF-18.

    James,
    It seems you are right. I'm not sure I know the difference. I thought 1xrtt was just the slow version of EVDO. Is it in/on a different sled or board, or will the newer modems fit? Its ok with me, I didn't buy it for WWAN. I've got a Verizon air card and can't see having multiple accounts . I use 3 different computers interchangeably for work and need to swap the card between them. A little off topic, but what is the difference between say a Lenovo Verizon EVDO modem and a Panasonic one, if any? They both seem to be Sierra Modems with QualComm technology and the same model #.

    Here is a good article on evdo.

    http://www.evdoinfo.com/content/view/37/61/

    as far as the modem differences from panasonic and other brands is panasonic uses daughter boards to mount the EVDO modems in the toughbooks. These boards are panasonic and model specific.

    Panasonic EVDO rev.0 uses a propitiatory connector that no other company uses. So you have to use a panasonic modem.

    EVDO rev.A uses a mini pci express slot and these modems are used in other computers and cards. It might be possible to use a mini pci express modem from something else in a EVDO rev.a sled from panasonic but i do not know if anyone has tried this.

    The CF-18 cannot have EVDO rev.A built in, they do not make a daughter board that supports it as far as i know.

    The CF-29 cf-30 can have EVDO rev.A using the same sled but the CF-18 and CF-19 are completly different.

    James,
    Thanks, the biggest problem is that my CF-29 is wireless ready, just needs a sled, my CF-30 is not wireless ready. Thankfully since the CF-18 won't take a sled that fits the CF-29 I won't be forced by some insane Toughbook logic to upgrade the CF-30 to wireless ready and get a EVDO rev.A card to fit all 3! I'm upgrading to EVDO rev.A on the aircard for free, I've had my Verizon account long enough to qualify. As you probably know, once you get this awful T'book disease common sense has no place in decisions about what you "need" next. :eek:
