No necessarily. A clue here is that it worked until you closed the screen. That tells me that you have a problem with the wiring at the hinges. I would trace it out to where it connects to the motherboard. Remove and reinsert the connector several times to clean a bit of corrosion off. Other than that, start checking your wires around the hinge area. Sounds like there might be a frayed wire or something else causing an intermittent. Something else you can do is to open the screen all the way, check the touchscreen. Then in increments start closing the screen while checking the touchscreen. What I mean is to move the screen a bit toward the closed position, maybe a 1/2 inch each time, stop, check the touchscreen then move the screen a bit more.

sounds like a good diagnosis, and yes, sometimes I question the ethical basis of some of our laptops as to how far they may dip in depravity.......Driller

I hate to say this... But I think you have a bad touchscreen. I have had the same, exact issue on the hundreds that I have worked on... Including some I have in stock now. Sometimes they work... Sometimes they don't... Sometimes the cursor retreats to the corner, bottom or side. Then it starts all over again. Then... It just doesn't work. It has to do with the adhesive used originally on the touchscreen itself to adhere it to the screen bezel. Works great... Then no worky...

I hope your mileage varies! ;)

Close, it is the adhesive used on the FFC from the Touchscreen panel to the touchscreen PCB (The white FFC cable) that is the issue. not the front cab to touchscreen adhesive

But, what is the fix without having to replace it? Why the hell is this so common a failure? Why can it not be re-adhered or whatever?

*ALL* of my Toughbooks with touch screens have failed for no reason. Pisses me off.

Because it was a manufacturer defect, Panasonic has since started getting touchscreens made by a different manufacturer and the problem has dropped considerably. The new screens, installed at factory started with the cf-19mk2 and cf-30 mk2 and everything around that time.

Just out of curiosity, has anyone had the "glue failure" problem with a digitizer CF-18 or is the "out of warranty manufacturer defect" limited to touch models?

I am not sure on the digitizer issue. If I remember right those have a circuit board connector instead of an FFC right?

I would guess probably about the same as it would when it was new. If it is left in a hot vehicle all the time then that will shorten it's life span.

Not everybody can fix this problem. It may destroy the ts instead of fixing it specially if you don't have an steady hand. Only the right person can do that.

As many of us know we can sometimes pick up great deals from sellers on fleabay who don't know our so called secrets :) now if they did know them would we still find them great deals... NO. In a perfect world it would be great to pass these secrets on and not worry about the whole net finding out BUT this world is not perfect and if you tell one person and by the next day the whole net is talking about it. I know for a fact that 3 Big fleabay sellers are watching this thread now hoping that someone will spill the beans. This has happen too many times in the past to many of the mods on here (gps) and I don't blame them for keeping it a secret. If it wasn't for these guys where would we be...would we know as much as we do now , I don't think so.
I hope no one gets ticked off at me for this but I stand behind the mods on this...and just to be clear on this I don't know the secret fix because if I did I would fix my CF-18 and 29 touchscreen :D
:swoon: That's my 2 cents worth :swoon:

I agree, but creeping around in the background as I do I really would like to know. It would be for my own gratification and enlightenment, as such, I've not sold the first toughbook I've purchased. Will either give them to family and friends that show an interest or point them to a good home that will benefit someone my gut says is worthy. As for PM if anyone wishes to send out hints? I'm the one with the big ears......Driller

Here's the deal. This forum is watched very closely by all sorts of Toughbook "Refurbishers" who wouldn't give any help or guidance to anyone. Most of the people who are around here a lot are honorable types, a few are not. Teo, significantly enhances the income from his real job by buying and upgrading Toughbooks. He has, over the years, freely given away most of his secrets and is often the first to answer tough questions here. The ability to easily repair the faulty touchscreens gives Teo and the others who know the secret a significant edge when buying units to repair and resell. I would not think of asking Teo for the information, but I bet he'd tell me if I did. People of honor assume that others are also honorable. Unfortunately that is not always the case. We should be content to let the boys keep their secret and send them the touchscreens for repair. They figured it out, they have given out enough hints, its only right that they profit from their efforts.

Ok, I agree that posting it in the open is not the best idea. How about a PM then? I have mine open as we speak to figure this out. Once I do, will I blab it around? Heck no. Would I PM it to someone with 1 post, heck no. Would I PM it to a person with 100+ posts, maybe.
