I recently bought a toughbook CF-28. It has windows xp installed on it. When I turn the computer on, the screen is very dim and I can barely see the word "panasonic." After the word "panasonic" shows up, the screen is completely blank. I am not sure what is wrong with this, please help

Have you read the manual yet? (Not flaming... Just asking!)

You can try the Fn + F2 to increase the brightness...

I tries increasing the brightness but nothing happened. I was thinking maybe the backlight screen or inverter is messed up but not sure how to tell which one

    Any whining noises?
Did u c the word Panasonic also in a dark room? Only to verify, that the inverter is working?

put an external monitor on the VGA-plug :)
so u can check the functionality of the Tb itself.
If it boots into the OS, try what Toughbook said, increase the brightness with the keys or in the energy options.

Otherwise the bulb is dead. Now it depends on ur skills, if u want to exchange the bulb or if u want to use the cf28 longer u can probably switch to an selfmade led backlight ;)

With it turned on take a good flashlight and shine onto the screen to see if you can see anything. Works if the backlight is out.

When I boot, I see the word panasonic but cannot see it in a dark room. I connected it to my tv. My tv recognized the TB was connected but the power light on the tv blinked (as it does when a computer is in sleep mode)

Try Fn-F3 to switch between monitors.

I tried that but it didn't work. I bought some new RAM because someone said that could be why it won't go past the Panasonic logo. Now I just have to wait for it to come in the mail

If the stick of ram is bad you can remove the stick of ram that is in it because CF-28 has ram on the motherboard that you can't remove. So it would still boot with out the extra ram in it.

I had almost the same problem as you (Panasonic Displayed with no backlight and then blank screen), and the steps I went through was to buy an inverter, which did make the screen light up but still nothing on the screen after the post screen, I then determined that it was probably a severe hardware failure and bought a new motherboard cheap off of ebay around $50.00 or so and it fixed the problem, Unfortunatly now my hard drive died and I ordered another one and am waiting for it to arrive so I can get it up and running again. Before this I didn't have any problems with it so I guess 9 years or trouble free service isn't too bad (over 20000 hours of use in the bios).
