Hi Guys,
I was wondering if you could help me I have a toughbook cf-28 800MHz it can be very slow, I was told here some time ago that all I need to do is to upgrade the RAM to 768 MB (Max for 800MHz version) and to upgrade the hard drive.
So now I'm after a hard drive to replace the existing one i'm told the hard drive needs to be a ATA-3 and have at least 7200RPM I plan to get one with a capacity of anywhere upwards from 80GB.
Could anybody give me a model number of a decent hard drive the more the better.
TIA

klain42,
The hard drives for the CF-28 need to be ATA/IDE. 7200 rpm drives are going to be hard to find. Hitachi 5400 rpm drives are a good compromise, try HITACHI Travelstar 5K160 HTS541616J9AT00, 160gb. The HTS Hitachis have a software utility you can download which allows you to control the drive from your desktop and save battery power. For ram, Toughbooks tend to be very fussy. Kingston ram, part # KTM-TP133/512 has always worked without a hitch for me. You might also try the steps in the tuneup guide(next thread down). Good luck and welcome to the group.

I have found a few of that exact ram model (Kingston KTM-TP133/512) on eBay, but it is always advertised as being for an IBM thinkpad - will if fo' sho' work on our machines?
-
it sure will

I stuck that exact memory in my crf28 800mhz toughbook and it worked very well. I got mine from ebay and it wasn't listed as a toughbook upgrade as well.

I have recently purchased two new Samsung Spinpoint M5 160 GB 2.5" IDE/PATA drives and will be upgrading the disks in my CF-18 and CF-28 with those units.
The Spinpoint drives are 5400 rpm.
Also, I have installed a Kingston KTM-TP133/512 module in this CF-28 and it works fine.

Some of the KTM-TP133/512 I see on Ebay have eight chips on one side - is this the correct type?

Yes, the correct ram stick has 8 chips arranged in 4 pairs horizontally on each side of the chip.
