I am trying to install Windows XP Home edition on a ToughBook I bought. It starts up but then tells me the hard drive can't be found. I tried to Install a Windows XP sp2 sata drive on F6 of the setup. It works and shows the drive (intel something...), but then when I hit enter it still shows the hard drive cannot be found. Can someone help me find the right driver? I suppose I need one just for Windows XP and not sp2 etc from the toughbook driver download website.

Does the hard drive show up in the BIOS ? F2 on start up. You should not need any drivers to load the OS. On the bottom of the 30 what do you have for a COA...XP, Vista or W7
It should not matter. -

Opps ... I would say. I know on the MK1 or any other toughbook I have or haved owned I never had this problem. Going to have to remember that one, thanks TC.

I believe it has vista. Someone I know got the computer as refurbished. I thought they were going to install the os, but did not. I have a disc, but I can't get past the part for the hard drive.
Any Ideas? -

I tried this and it did not work. On the screen where it tells you to verify the INTEL part - That is there, but then I hit enter and I still get the same hard drive not found error.Last edited by a moderator: May 8, 2015 -

Hey...
I have seen this too…a XP disc would not see the HD what ever I did. But a recovery disc would see it just fine. I don’t think xpsp2 will see a sata drive -

If all else fails, read the Instructions.

If I were you I would pickup the Panasonic Restore disk for your model but you need to be sure what COA you have on the bottom of your 30. This disk can install the OS in about 30 min and put your COA numbers in too BUT it must be the OS that came with it or the disk will not install. This is what you need Panasonic CF-30 Toughbook Recovery DVDs | eBay -

I did the instructions again and still it shows the "Intel(R) ICH9M-E/M SATA AHCI Controller" as the one selected. I hit enter and still come up with a screen that says it is not able to load the OS due to not being able to find a hard drive.
What could I be doing wrong? -

My COA says: Windows Vista Business. So the Recovery DVD's should work? Probably not a bad idea to have them anyways.

I have never had any problems when I use the restore disk and it only takes about 30 minutes

Check BIOS to see if there is a SATA native mode and disable it. Win 7 and Linux have the drivers to support it. I've run into this with installing XP on various laptops with SATA. The best way to get the OS is via a Recovery Disk as the required driver(s) have been patched in.

Well, bought me a CF-30k restore disk and everything is working perfectly now. It restored everything without any issues. Thanks again

Well a little late now but I think that in order to run XP on a CF-30 MK3 you need to downgrade the bios. On the MK1 you have to upgrade the bios for vista /w7 but if you put XP back on you must down grade the bios. Maybe that was the problem.
update:
That is only required on the MK 1 and MK 2 versions , thank you Rusty for the info. -

Well, I haven't worked on any TB with a SATA drive, but the five 'Other Brands' laptops I have that were SATA equipped had issues that ended up either using a restore disk for that make and model (best option) or changing the SATA mode in BIOS.

I had exactly the same thing recently.
I found the appropriate SATA install driver, but could not get it to both boot and install using a USB floppy for the driver disk.
I ended up adding the driver to the XP SP3 OEM disk I was installing, using 'nLite'.
That then installed perfectly.
I did not want to change anything else on the machine, as the whole point was to be able to swap between W7 and XP by exchanging hard drive caddies. -

Well, that makes a third option for me. I'll have to try that next time.
The swap drives deal is what I do on a Dell I have. Makes it much easier!
