Toughbook aficionados - this forum has been a wealth of information on the TB products and extremely helpful in causing me to part with a hell of a lot of cabbage for a CF-31.

During the order process, it's clear that not every configuration is possible to get. I was looking for the i5-540M chipset, integrated webcam, fingerprint reader, GPS, Gobi, and Firewire plus all the other usual bits. After numerous phone calls, I've concluded that ordering even from the "best" partner reseller has its limitations. You can pick three, but not all five. Variations on a theme also met with "...that is not possible...".

After much teeth gnashing, the final configuration is Windows 7 -64bit OS, Intel Core i5-540M 2.53GHz, 250GB solid state drive, 8GB Memory, Intel WiFi
a/b/g/n, ATI Discrete Graphics, Integrated GPS, Emissive Backlit Keyboard, Gobi radio, Dual Pass Thru antenna (Upper:WWAN/Lower:GPS), and Integrated Web Cam.

I'm certain there will be something to add later on, and from what I've seen on this forum, the resourcefulness of the group confirms that anything is possible, just a matter of effort. I look forward to learning from you.

I used a configure utility on one of the CF-31 sellers website's the other day
Your options are the similar as I had selected ,I added the optical drive

I found that, as usual the add on's almost equaled as the base price for the cf-31

Gentlemen - thank you for the words of welcome. My intent is to keep a running account of the order - delivery - usage lifecycle. Since I didn't get exactly the configuration I was looking for, I'll give a view as to what worked, what didn't, and look to some ideas from the group on what to improve.

Have you already ordered it? If not, and if you can allow yourself to hold off on the GOBI I would not order the GOBI. I would wait until it is 4G LTE ready, which should be early Spring. That Verizon 4G LTE flys! The best I have gotten so far was 18.9 Mbps UL and 13.2 DL. I got one of the USB type right now, my GOBI is feeling very lonely right now :(

Anyhow, that is a nice machine for sure. Congrats and welcome to the funny farm!

Toyo - I did order the beast. It seems the configuration tool includes the Gobi with all the other features that I wanted. There must be some pre-built platforms that get staged to fulfill the orders as they come in for the value, standard, and performance categories.

Since most of my work is overseas with less than developed infrastructure, waiting isn't an option.
