My first post in this forum described the system I was about to order, specifically the model CF-31AGP7G1M with Win7 64-bit, Intel Core i5-540M 2.53GHz, vPro, 13.1inch XGA Touch, 250GB SSD, 8GB Memory, Intel WiFi a/b/g/n, TPM, Bluetooth, ATI Discrete Graphics, GPS, Emissive Backlit Keyboard, Gobi radio, Dual Pass (Upper:WWAN/Lower:GPS), WebCam, DVD Multi-Drive, and Toughbook Preferred service.
The order date was 14 DEC 2010. Expected delivery is 19 JAN 2011. I had a diplomatic conniption fit a week ago when I'd heard the delivery might take as long as the end of March.
In the meantime, the docking station has arrived, as has the memory, and all the software. I'd asked my very helpful and friendly sales representative to play good cop with me as bad cop to get Panasonic to step on it. I'd like to get the system before it becomes obsolete![]()
The point being - be patient if you order one of these systems, they seem to be in high demand and one off orders may be finding their way toward the back of the queue.
Next post - the unveiling and set up of the beast.

Looks nice
Most of my new Toughbooks have been readily available as I am cheap and get last years mk#
I bet the GPS is a fairly rare option, as it was on my cf-30
I bought my cf-30 mk2 when the mk3's were released -
Can I ask how much you paid?
-
The 540 chip models are almost all built to order. I was told 6 to 8 weeks by an honest vendor, so I searched and found a model that had everything I wanted plus a couple extra bits and that was on the shelf in the Panasonic warehouse.
-
I bought my Mk1 as soon as Mk1 CF-30's came out
... I was like a 6 year old kid waiting for santa to bring him his presents... GAH!

2: 4GB memory
3: Loading up Windows 7 was easy.
4: Brighter screen
It just runs so much better and it did not cost me very much -
Battery lasts longer on the cf-30, replacement batterys are cheaper ,fresher
The touchcreen version of the cf-30 is 1000 nits, thats truly outdoor readable
The downside of the cf-30 is it's bulky in compairison , the lid is quite thick -
As Alex has said Win 7 runs GREAT on the CF-30 (which I run Win 7 on mine full time too and I LOVE IT). The ability to have 4GB RAM blows the CF-29's max capacity of 1.5GB out of the water (Unless your name is Azrial, in which case you have used a hammer to make 2.5GB work, which is still piddly). On top of that you have SATA which means 32MB cache 7200 RPM drives on the main stream and are EASY to get. You can also cram a 1TB laptop drive into the CF-30 caddies too if you need to store extra pr0n's...
Also (as Alex has already stated) the 1000 nit screen makes the CF-29 screen look like an old useless rusty bent nail. The battery life is also better.
SOOOOO...... Topcop, when can I set you up with a MINTY CF-30 with low battery cycles just like I've set up NUMEROUS other members here including Connor and Jeff? (Gork!)
Thanks -

Ditto on all of the above and added emphasis on the battery life. Figure a whole day to do a battery refresh with newish batteries, main and media bay.

If I don't get hosed over on taxes I might sell the 29 and the other 72 to get a 30.
-
Nah, get a 31. It's the "hot" ticket.
-
bnemmie -all up the unit was just over $7200. lots of cabbage, but I'm expecting it to perform without fail

Thats where I bought my new cf-30 a few years ago
Quite a few of us here have purchased from them -
Good to know, Thanks. Whats the good word on buytough.com? Has anyone had good luck with them?
-
buytough.com is good too... I've bought from them

Thanks for all the info guys. When my tax return comes around there will be a new Toughbook in my future.

I have used Buytough many times. There local to me and I just give them a call whenever I need something that I can't wait on. My 1st CF-30 came from them, very honest people to deal with, as I am sure the company mentioned above is.
-
Ill be sure to call around when the time comes and see what I can get.
Do any of these company's happen to offer a military or law enforcement discount? -
The guy you want to deal with at Buytough is Michael. He will work with you on the pricing.

$8500? Sounds wrong. Try building it on this site:

Here's my dream CF-31:
CF-31ATN7D1M
Status:
CURRENT
MSRP:
$5,608
Description: Windows 7 Professional, Intel Core i5‑540M 2.53GHz, 13.1" XGA Touchscreen LCD, 250GB Shock‑mounted HDD, 2GB, ATI Discrete Graphics, Wi‑Fi, Bluetooth, Gobi, Single Pass (WWAN), FireWire, Webcam, TPM 1.2, Toughbook Preferred -
I double checked my options in case I messed up, and with all the options I picked it was about $8,500. Here is all the big options:
64 bit Windows 7 Professional, Intel Core i5‑540M 2.53GHz, 13.1" XGA Touchscreen LCD, 256GB SATA 300 Solid State Drive, 8GB, Backlit Emissive Keyboard, ATI Discrete Graphics, Wi‑Fi, Bluetooth, Gobi, Dual Pass (WWAN), FireWire, Webcam, TPM 1.2, DVD Super Multi Drive, DC Adapter, Extra 9 Cell Battery, External Battery Charger, SmartCard Reader.
Even on Panasonic's website the closest they could find was one that was almost 7k. That one had less ram, non SSD, no DVD drive, no web cam and a couple other small things I was hoping to get. So it looks like Ive got some saving to do lol. -
Try this: CF-31ATN7D1M $5600. Prolly get a deal on that for closer to $4600
Description: Windows 7 Professional, Intel Core i5‑540M 2.53GHz, 13.1" XGA Touchscreen LCD, 250GB Shock‑mounted HDD, 2GB, ATI Discrete Graphics, Wi‑Fi, Bluetooth, Gobi, Single Pass (WWAN), FireWire, Webcam, TPM 1.2, Toughbook Preferred
On you own you can probably add the memory, OS, keyboard, DVD, battery, charger, smartcard reader, a better SSD, and a night of unprecedented debauchery for less than $4k. Oh, and pics or it (the nocturnal festivities) didn't happen. -
Got a call today that the "beast" is in transit. As an aside, I am purchasing the unit from buytough as they are local to me as well.
Bnemmie - I noted your configuration as it is nearly identical to what I ultimately ordered for $7600. However, I was not able to get a Firewire option if I also wanted the Webcam.
The configuration tools are suspect in my opinion, as I've gotten conflicting configs that buytough and other resellers could not seem to provide.
Good luck with your ordering process, mine is now going on a full 6 weeks from order to arrival at buytough. -
-
Good luck.
-
That model has the firewire and webcam and a few other things it would be a beotch to retrofit. The rest of the stuff on your wishlist is an easy bolt on. Speaking of bolt ons, tell us more about that night.

The Beast is in. I will post pics this weekend, but I suspect you all know what she looks like - beautiful, bodacious, and FAAAST.
I have a plain vanilla install of W7 Pro, Office 2010, Chrome browser, ObjectDock and Skype at this point. All updates have been successfully applied.
On the hardware side, she's loaded with 8MB RAM and a 256GB SSD which further quickens the pace.
I can find everything as ordered except for the GPS. The dual pass connections are there, but no driver that stands out in my search of the system. -
The gps is really just a signal on a com port, there are lots of threads here on links to free downloadable programs that will show that the gps is working and give you basic position info and sats in view
Is the ssd stock? and can you relay the part # for the ssd please -
I may be over my head here but if GPS is set to Auto in Bios you will see a certain number of com ports open in control panel. If it doesn't say gps on any of the ports that's o.k. Just make a note of the com ports used, re-start, go into bios, disable gps continue and check com ports again. There should be one missing. That's your com port for GPS. On my CF-30 it's 6.
GPSInfo.exe is a simple little tool that will tell you the same thing with-out the fooling around. Globalsat has it.
Congratulations.
Jeff

Streets and trips has a trial that will find it. I got a few BSODs with that though, so I plucked it out with Revo. I then put Garmin PC on. It's every bit as deficient as their dash units. Still looking for a "turn by turn" having an algorithm with enough sense to realize that, unless you can shave 10 miles or more, the freeway is going to kick surface street travel right in the taco. Can I put "shave" and "taco" in the same sentence here?
-
Thanks for all the tips gents. I installed MS Streets and Trips and it picked up the GPS (COM6) straight away.
Tomcat57, the SSD on the Beast is Hitachi HTS545025B9SA00. It came configured with the system. -

Well am I right or am I wrong? I hope you didn't pay for an SSD and got a plain ol disk drive instead.
