Today my Toughbook CF-W2 came in. It was a parts and repair deal off eBay, but came complete with hard drive and battery. I turned it on and it worked great. Set it down, when i came back it had a black blank screen on.

Playing with it afterwards i looked again in BIOS and the DVD drive that was showing before is not showing, the charger is not working, it was working before.

It turns out that the charger i bought that came in today too stopped working. Using my Toughbook 29 charger for it right now and it's back charging. Still can't get the DVD drive to work. It still won't recognize in BIOS.

The first time i ran BIOS i could see DVD listed. It's not showing in device manager now either. But when you put a DVD in it and close the lid the DVD light comes on.

Going to have to split the case and see what's going on. The CPU TEMP seems to be holding between 54 and 58 DEG. Haven't done any video testing on it yet. Guessing wireless is missing too. Not displaying in device manager.

I looked but couldn't find much out about this model. If i can't get this one fixed what parts will work on the other CF-W,T,Y Toughbook models. Say mainly the screen and hard drive.

Did the heat sink made to the bottom of the keyboard use thermal paste on it factory or did it have a thermal pad? Thanks.

Guess i should of done a little more digging before first posting. I think I have it all sorted out now on this little unit. I have been researching the other W, Y, and T models. During this i ran across the black screen and shut down problem i was having. It was with the voltage on the harddrive. I also found a way around having to cut the pins from the samsung 80 GB harddrive that was already upgraded in this unit. Below is the best write ups on what i found out about the harddrive voltage problem.

Replacing Hard Drive in Panasonic Toughbook Y2/W2/T2 | Toughbook Central

Now either from me playing with the connections or it was the harddrive voltage playing with the system the DVD drive is back working.

The wireless card was missing and the leads were scotched taped, many of the screws are missing so i know someone has been inside it no too long ago. I had three wireless cards for some CF-28's i have been working on so i installed the card while i was inside of it and have gotten the wireless back working. All in all it's turning out to be a nice little laptop. I have ordered some screws for it, it's a pile off of a CF-72 so i am hoping they will fit, looking for ram and plastic hinge cover that is broken tonight maybe i will have it all the way back going before i head off to work again. Now to do some stress testing to see if the arctic silver i put on it did any good.
