I understand that the new CF-30 and possibly the CF-52 support multi-touch. I understand that windows 7 will support this too. There is a rumor of a laptop version of 7 that will have lower system requirements. Is there any theoretical reason that toughbooks should not be able to be used as multitouch? The first issue is 'How low can you go?' I have read that it might work on a 1.6ghz Atom.

Don't expect system requirements until next year, but Windows 7 will give you "a good user experience" on a 1.6GHz Atom processor with 1GB of RAM and 16GB of disk space, according to Windows Lead Program Manager Leon Braginski.

If this is true, then it might run on a CF-29. Who knows, maybe even a 1ghz CF-28.

If Windows 7 can be put on a toughbook, then that machine should be able to do multitouch. Unless multitouch is too taxing.

    Thoughts?

But what are the min requirements of 7? If the Min is say 4GB's, and the multi touch only needs 1GB of that too work then no it wont work on a non upgraded 30. Correct me if I am wrong, but thats just the min for that program, you have to include everything else.

That's not what it says...it says "Windows 7 will give you "a good user experience" on a 1.6GHz Atom processor with 1GB of RAM and 16GB of disk space".

So therefore in theory yes it would run okay on a CF-29, but as for multi-touch I don't know if it is handled by the software layer or hardware also.

Don't get too excited about "retrofitting" older touchscreen machines for multitouch; ALL multitouch PCs use a completely different touchscreen technology, involving multilayer sensing screen and approx 8x the sensor resolution/density. :(

Believe me, I would LOVE to incorporate something on my beloved CF-28 Mk3... but I fear it would require a lot of luck to find a compatible touchscreen that would fit inside the CF-28 screen AND still be waterproof...

WIndows 7 is basically a new face on Vista. There won't be that great a benefit with Multitouch than it just can.
