I figured we would have some fun and post some speed tests on some SSD's we have in our Toughbooks to compare all in one thread. This isn't a install guide or a tweak guide. Just posting what we are using and what we got for results.
To keep this even we will need to use this software.

Why on earth is this thing so slow in it's SSD?? is it almost full?
-
-
It's a 1.8" SSD attached to a 2.5 IDE male x 1.8" SATA female adapter. So it's on a IDE channel, Once I get more tweaks done I will do it again and update my first post about it as needed. More about that computer on TBT in the CF-M34 section. It's part of a project of running some of these adapter in older toughbooks to see how they run speed wise.

Since Ador posted this link in another thread... I thought I would put in some info I recently ran across. I've bought several SSDs over the past few days for different builds. I used to use the Samsung 840EVO, Kingston 300 or Kingston HyperX. While comparing prices between Newegg and Amazon I ran across the reviews on Amazon. Apparently the Kingston SSDs have dropped off VERY sharply in quality over the past 6-8 months. They are starting to pile up terrible reviews! Just FYI...
-
My choice is Samsung
It's a pity we don't have mSATA slot -
Samsung is good in my book, Intel is proving to be really good as well. Sandisk is still new, but still looking good in my very limited experience.
Had some corsairs force lately that where almost DOA. Had 5 of them, 3 of them where dead within the hour. Some firmware thing, but not user repairable. Send the lot back and got some Sandisk Extreme III's back. Worked nice, and even 10 bucks cheaper!
I have had really bad experience with OCZ vertex. Can't remember 2 or 3, but ordered 3 and 2 where DOA, third died within weeks. All of them exchanged at the time for Samsungs, never had any problem with those. -
Yup... All I buy is the Samsung 840 EVO now. I just used my last Kingston in my wife's CF-52M build. I'll keep tabs on it...

I have had my Kingston Hyper X for a little over a year and no problems at all but I have been buying Samsung from Newegg these last few months but only because of the price.
-
I put a Samsung 500GB SSD in my CF-30 build (at the forum's recommendation) and have had zero issues with it so far. I did follow a link from here to a site about optimizing SSD's and followed about 2/3 of the recommendations. I have about 100GB filled so far.
-
Just put in a new Samsung 840 EVO 250GB (Thanks, Rob!) and re-tested.

BIG increase in performance with this 840 EVO, sequential writes about tripled! Boot time was varying 15-19 seconds at first with the new 840 EVO, then I used Samsung Magician to optimize system settings and now getting solid 15's. Samsung setup it's own power profile so I changed back to Panasonic power saver and boot times seem the same.
Then I setup "Over Provisioning" using Magician with the recommended setting of 10% and selecting the Reliability option. Rebooted and re-ran CDN:

Most of the scores improved a few percent with OP, although Random Write 512 slipped a few. Overall a very impressive drive especially considering that Panasonic probably slowed down the sata interface on this 53 for heat control and/or reliability (?) as they are prone to doingADOR likes this. -

That's a good price. I paid almost that for my Samsung 250GB when I got my CF-53.

Hey, folks!
Sorry for necro-posting here.
"Rocking" a CF-53mk2 here. After installing an SATAIII capable SSD I notice that this toughy only uses SATAII [3gb/s] capabilities, whereas the chipset has SATAIII built in.
Is this by design in the CF-53 [energy consumption, what have you...], or am I doing something wrong?
Thanks!!Last edited: Dec 10, 2015 -
No necro posting, this is one of the threads we keep up from time to time to put what speeds we got from the toughbook on here for others to compare to theirs.
You guessed it the speed is locked down by the factory. I don't have that exact model to compare but maybe someone else does. Run crystal disk mark and post your score up. If you don't want to install the program there is a portable version.toughasnails likes this. -
FYI, some Disk Mark results of PassMark Performance Test 8.0 in MegaByte/second
CF-19mk6 with Samsung 850Pro on Win7 gets these results:
194,9MBs SeqRead, 182,4MBs SeqWrite, 115,7MBs Random RW
CF-19mk3 with Samsung 830 on Win8.1 gets these results:
80,3MBs SeqRead, 84,9MBs SeqWrite, 73,8MBs Random RW -
Hi there!
Getting speeds typical for SATA2 on a CF-53 mk2. HDD is a SanDisk Extreme Pro SSD 240GB.
@Springfield I wonder how you're attaining those results in CDM. Those are SATA3 not SATA2 speeds. Was there a bios update in the meantime?
