What have they been smoking? at that volume they should be $50.00 a piece.

that is pretty expensive for a Pentium 4 Toughbook, i could get one for around 300 USD for that spec.

The Panasonic Toughbook CF-29HTM50BM units being listed in that auction have all been inspected, tested, and processed by Panasonic's refurbishment center; they are Pentium M not Pentium IV.

That model number doesn't come up in the configurator, do you know if it is a special order from an agency?

Perhaps it is a good deal to someone willing to pay for convenience.

Imagine how long it would take to individually seek out a good deal on that many toughbooks. Then you have the fact that you can buy that many machines with exactly the same configuration.

If you have a company you can have your IT guy sort out any of the machines with a single disc.

I'll have a look in my paypal account but I think I may be a tiny bit short...

Did you notice that there's a "Make Offer" button on that auction?

I did and I made an offer.

I probably won't get all those Toughbooks for $87 though. :(

I personally doubt that these units have been "Factory Refurbished" since they don't have an OS and I'm not seeing any warranty seals; I've worked in several such centers and we never shipped anything as "Refurbished" WITHOUT an OS, and we NEVER sold ANYTHING that worked without a seal.

As for the price... it STILL is pretty steep, considering you still have to acquire 3000 optical drives and install 3000 OSes... you've just added $100-150 per unit in deployment costs, and that's if they REALLY ARE as pristine as the seller promises.

Once you do the math, it's more like he's trying to get retail price for a wholesale lot WITHOUT actually doing the work...

If that where my auction I would have just set it up aso instead of one big lot like they did people could just buy the number they wanted. If you take the amount they want and divide by 3000 thats like 635 a unit. You can find others on ebay for less than that WITH an OS. Come on people use your head. Set it up at like 400 for each unit and just let people select how many they want to buy or bid on.

Did you really offer $87 for all those? I would so laugh if they accidently hit accept offer. Id take quite a few off ur hands lol

Yeah I did. I was going to offer more but I thought I might get lucky and the guy would sell me just one for the entire contents of my PayPal account. :)

I always make an offer on these ludicrous sales. A few years ago I won an old Toshiba laptop for 99c and the seller asked me if I could actually afford the postage. He obviously thought I was some kind of cheapskate... which I am of course. :)

I don't think I could afford the postage on 3000 Toughbooks though. :(

mnementh, I apologize if you misunderstood what I said. The units are not in "Factory Refurbished" condition, but were processed by Panasonic's refurbishment center. The units being advertised in that auction are in very good cosmetic shape; again it's not my auction, but I have personally seen the units.

The Panasonic Toughbook CF-29HTM50BM was built specifically for SBC/AT&T, and was given to their workers in the field. Although it's not listed in the configuration each unit contains a now defunct broadband wireless card which allowed them VPN access from wherever they were.

Ahhh... sortof like all those CF-28s that got dumped on the market by the boatload when Analog cellular went bye-bye... Were those CF-29s "processed" to remove said card?

I guess I wouldn't mind having one; but I still say that price is way too close to retail for the hassle factor, given the nature of the most probable customers.

Heck, if I was looking at a lot that big, I'd probably want them shipped with a custom image and I'd DEFINITELY want an optical drive in every unit to keep my average (L)user from sticking his letter opener in there and blowing it up...

Yup... still no OS, still no optical drive. And $58 shipping via USPS?!? OUCH!

The whole thing will fit nicely inside a large flat-rate box for $13.50 Domestic... heck, you can ship it WORLDWIDE for $51.25.

    Ouch.

    mnem
    *hugs his CF-28*

"WE HAVE OVER LARGE QUANTITIES AVAILABLE."

Well I am glad to see that the have more then many units available...

but the seller is selling the individual units for 433 USD, but the whole sale lot is 633 USD per unit.

Did he do the math wrong? or did he mean to sell maybe 5000 units instead of 3000?

Edit: to mnementh the postage to USA is only 29 USD, a lil better I suppose

I wish them the best of luck of course, but i bought a CF30 MK3 with only 80 hours on it for just a tad more than his price.
Someone is going to run across those not knowing the going price and jump all over it. You wait and see.

I just bought one of those for slightly less than listed using "Make and Offer" I did ask him first whether or not they did come with the CD/DVD drive. He replied that it did and had not noticed the discrepancy in the listing. He is also loading XP on it prior to shipping. I have noticed ANOTHER listing by him for the same item but now much more. Check out item #260502150671

I tried negotiating with them about a week ago, passing the info for any future bargainers. They were asking $439 I offered $300. They countered $389, but I was not willing to go much higher than $300. They said they paid "much more" than $300 for them.
