I have a CF-30 mk2. It's a good machine and I like it very much.
However I never ever use the integrated carrying handle.
I realise that the handle is part of the Toughbook image. But I can't help feeling that if it was really that useful, you would expect to see something similar on other Toughbook models or on other manufacturer's models.
So I'm curious. Do you ever use the handle on your Toughbook? Do you feel it justifies the additional weight and expense?

I find the handle quite useful.
When handling the computer under difficult conditions, cold, sleet, rain, dark, etc, it makes my grasp of the machine very secure. I would that assume that other manufacturers do not incorporate such a a handle only because they never what you to try to use your notebook under those conditions...
Of course if you don't need yours you can just take it off. -

.It's so much easier to carry it that way. Most other manufacturer's don't put them on it because they don't want you to be bang it around because they know it will not stand up........they want you to pack it up in a 10 lbs bag to protect it. My dell XPS weights almost 18 lbs laptop+bag
. Myself I think I can handle the extra 3oz handle on my CF-29
and thats my 2 cents worth

If only I can install a handle on the 51!! -

But you're right. There have been more models with handles than I had realised.
1. The CF-27/28/29/30 series
2. The CF-71/72/73/74 series
3. The CF-52
4. The W8
5. The H1 -
The hard-knuckle CF-17 handle can be used on a M34. Now, that's one helluva handle for this midget! Ask me how I know!
Whether strap or handle, it doesn't matter... the TBs need not hide in a bag. -
I use my handle all the time... Especially when carrying multiple Toughbooks! But I love the saddle bag made for the CF-30... Just strap it around the CF-30 and grab the handle and go! I can carry everything I need... Except for the heat seeking missles... I still need the quick-launch trailer for those....

Everyday and twice on Sunday.

I don't think I would buy a Toughbook without a handle...
-
well, if you use a laptop like a desktop then yeah I do agree the handle is useless.
But I use the handle to transport... and I agree, if other manufacturer's laptops were as durable, they'd put handles on it as well. Take your CF-30 by the handle the next time you go through airport security. Those of us that have has probably heard, "sir, please take the laptop out of the case."
"it doesn't have a case." -
I love the handle on my Toughbook, I use it daily carrying it around. I've had that happen before CanuckCam, I've also had people ask why I carry around a metal briefcase, and everyone says "damn that thing must stop a bullet." Funny thing is, I've worked on one that has. -
I'm just wonder how you carry your toughbook? Put on a back pack/bag pack or in bag is that what you mean?
ohlip -
If I'm not carrying the Toughbook in the bag I'm carrying it by the handle. I wish all laptops had a handle. Very handy!...pun intended.
Occasionally use it as a wrist rest too.

as my toughbook lasts all day and some on battery, i dont need a bag, so just carry the laptop by itself so use the handle all the time to, well, carry the thing! it would be far too cumbersome to try and transport under my arm or balanced on my head!
-
The handle's pretty much the main reason I buy a Full-rugged Toughbook.
I mean, it says "I'm no pansy plastic laptop; I can face the whole world WITHOUT a laptop bag. You wanna piece a' me?"
Besides, you can't clobber anyone worth a d@mn without that handle...

I don't wanna kill anyone but for sure if you pick a fight with me and I have my Toughbook on me (which is ALWAYS), I will hit you, and I will try to kill you... You can't beat a solid steal object coming at you at 20 miles per hour... Also if someone pointed a gun at me I would hide behind my Toughbook as well -
Oh Rob, what if... you meet a guy down a dark alley carrying...
"I never go out without my ToughStuff™" ... ROFL. j/k ... except for the TS-1 and CF-30. -
Yeah, I know... If that guy has a glock I'm pretty effed... especially if it's a .45... I think a 45 would kick the cf-30's ...
-
If I met a guy in an alley with the Glock, I would hope to have these (see pic) with me. If he wasn't taken in by her (he's probably gay then I would take my chances), or if he really means me harm, I will resort to utilizing her "friend"!

God I love those curves.... The gun is nice too!

The 18 has a strap, not a hard handle like the 17, which I don't mind since it has D-rings for me to attach a shoulder strap. Yes, it's a tablet when the screen is turned and flipped over.

I extend the 29's handle and use it as a wrist rest!
-
Plus you can really get good swing when you want to crack someone over the head with your Toughbook Spark
-
-
Take it a step forward and get the rings with a shoulder strap as well.. They bolt on to the front of the CF-30 and to the back of the CF-29:

I actually hate the models that DON'T have a huge carry handle on them! I don't consider them REAL Toughbooks! haha
-
Big fan of the handle. Well designed, convenient...what's not to like?
Toughbook handle - useful or useless?
