When swapping out the hard drive in your toughbook do you need a specific toughbook certified harddrive, if there is such a thing, or can any similar harddrive be used?

This might seem like a dumb question but I am new to toughbooks in general and after trying every other brand of laptop out there I'm sick and tired of crappy quality and I'm ready to take a dip in the toughbook fountain of youth.

No, there is no special hard drive just make sure you know whether your machine needs and IDE drive or a SATA drive. Hitachi drives seem to be the preferred drives among the more experienced members.

    Welcome and good luck.

Daax... Welcome to the forum. As KL pointed out.... Any hard drive of your type will work. It is the caddy and (sometimes) internal heater that makes the hard drive able to survive impact and vibration. The heater doesn't help with the vibratoin (obviously) but helps a lot in cold conditions.

Hitachi is good but I have also been using Samsung Spinpoint and WD drives.
