    Hi All,

I just got my Toughbook cf-30 and did a close inspection on it. I noticed something about the touchpad, and that's when looking
at it closely under light you could see that the touching surface has slight movements as if it's a plastic sheet glued to
the base on the border but could have some up and down movements in the middle. Since this is the only Toughbook I've seen
in person, I have no idea if this is how it's supposed to be, or if it's a kind of defect. Can anyone please tell me if that's the way
    it is or not?

    Thanks,

Do you know how many hours is on your 30 ...in the first BIOS screen at the bottom. I have seen a few Toughbooks with high hours on them the cover over the touch pad starting to lift some. You can move it up and down very little but you can not move sideways

Thanks for the replies. It's got about 8000 hours on it. It's a relief to know a bit of up and down movement could be
expected. I've also attached a couple of pictures.

That is not a lot of hours...my 53 has 6000 hours and just a little over 1 year old. I would not worry about it. To replace it is not a easy job and will cost you at least $75.00 .

Thanks, I hope mine also goes strong for many years to come. By the way I got mine about 400$ off ebay, I was wondering if it's considered as a good
deal here or not? It's a CF-30FCS64AM model.

The touchpad can look a lot worse than that and still function well. I sold a CF-30 to a member here which had worn through the top two layers of the touchpad and needed a little epoxy to stop the peeling. Still worked fine.

First the sort of frosty coating wears off, then the slick layer gets a little loose, then it wears through and starts to peel. You need to stick it down with epoxy to stop the peeling.

I should post a picture of the CF-29 I built for a well driller out in CA. He sent it back to me for repair. I have to say that it was the most well used Toughbook that I ever saw. The Touchpad was worn all the way through all layers but still functioned. It looked ugly but it worked. I surprised him and just built him a brand new CF-29 and shipped it out. The guy had recommended me to several others who bought so he earned it... And I had several extra CF-29s at the time.

    Hi,
When you say use epoxy to fix the touchpad, how do you mean? My touchpad looks like it's been used with a pen lid; the textured surface has been scratched off and it feels like the smooth layer underneath it is lifting from whatever it should be attached to. It's generally working, but lifting a finger off from where it's worn smooth results in the pointer shooting off to some other part of the screen. It's ok on the unworn areas around the edges though.

Also, am I correct in thinking the CF18, CF29 and CF30 all use the same touchpad?

    Matt.

The epoxy only helps when the top layer has completely worn through, has a hole in it, and is starting to peel off. The pad still worked fine, even under the epoxy bumps.

I mentioned above that I replaced one of my customers CF-29s free of charge as he sent me so many customers. When I received it... The touchpad looked like this! It still worked.

I just found the picture and thought I would post it.
