I just purchased another toughbook and it came with 2GB ram. I removed the stick and booted and it said it has 1024mb ram onboard.

I didnt think any TB had that much onboard?

Yes, it is a rare animal though: While there are very few Panasonic Toughbook CF-29 units with 1GB of on-board memory Panasonic did begin to introduce them starting in November of 2005 with the Mark 4 (specifically CF-29LTSGZBM). Only a hand-full of models were released in 2006 with that specification.

no it will not work, if it even posts you would have stability issues with it

Not really necessary ,you won't need more that 1GB in xp or 1.5GB in vista or W7
But you can try if you want , the chipset is not supposed to go above 2gb usable

Is there a way to determine how much on-board memory a system has using Windows or BIOS without turning it off and taking off a cover or two to access the memory area?

    In Windows go:

Start --> Settings --> Control Panel --> Syatem

The front screen will give you the total usable (but not physical) memory.

For total system memory details try CPUID:

    http://www.cpuid.com/download/cpuz/cpuz_154_setup.exe

The standard Panasonic utility's have memory info as well
They install automatically if you use the restore disks, or are available for download
    Found in Program files /Panasonic

You could also just look up the model number.

The only thing to watch is that the configurator does not contain all the Toughbook models that Panasonic has produced.

Alex, I meant that is should work with 3GB!! Azrial has a 29 with 2.5GB in his and it's working... what's another 512MB?!?!?

If I am wrong I do apologize :(

EDIT, I see as per his signature that he has 2.25GB???? Wouldn't it be 512 on board if his is a mark 6?!?!?!? Azrial, is your sig wrong maybe??

His is 256mb on board...2GB chips will not work with 512mb on board models, and as reported earlier in the thread it will not work with rare 1GB on board models

    Nope, the signature is correct.

I have 256MB mounted on the Motherboard and a 2GB stick in the slot. The system sees only 2GB at the BIOs, but Win7 sees all 2.25GB

I have 1.99GB for system use and the rest seems used by UAM, as there is no deficit showing for that usage.

Per my understanding  of the Intel White papers I have read the chipset will see up to 2GB for system RAM and a max 256MB for UAM. So, that should account for all of it. That is why I say that the system will not post with more then 2.25GB present.

I posted my memory usage in the thread on this subject. :D
