Thinking of updating my cf-19 mk2 (I think) to one that has a higher nit screen as I use it outdoors a lot.

What Tb have these that are reasonably priced (in the uk)?

Starting with the Mk3 there is a big difference in the screen. It's LED and is VERY clear in full sunlight.

So all the cf19 mk3 are better? Good.

How about any 29 or 30's?

The Mk3 on the 19 series is when they started the LED lights and upped the nit rating from 550 on the Mk1-Mk2 to 1000 on the Mk3 and up series. The 29's and 30's are going to be the same as the Mk1/Mk2 CF-19.

except the 30mk3 (&up) when they started using LED backlights (but already had 1000nit from mk1 - CCFL though).

my mk5 is very well readable in sunlight. I still prefer to sit in the shade, but that is more because I don't like to sit in the sun.

I've used the original CF-30 in the field a lot, and the screen was hellishly bright. You could torture someone with it in a dark room, seriously.

Just make sure that you ask all the right questions, since not all of the CF-30 units had this high-nit panel AFAIR...

As for the pricing, don't know about UK, but they are getting to be affordable here in the States...

    Happy hunting.

I have a CF-28 mark 2 (800Mhz) with a daylight transflective screen (800x600). It tested it outside together with a cf-28 with normal screen, and a CF-M34. The transflective screen is indeed a bit better readable as the other 2 , but in direct-sunlight all 3 laptops were badly readable.

The CF-30s and CF-31s have a much better daylight readable screen, i guess, but they are also more expensive as a CF-28. I bought my CF-28 transflective at e-bay a year ago, for 110 euros. (including working battery that lasts 3 hours)

With a Toughbook...VERY hard.....They are not designed to be Upgraded/Modded...Just the opposite..They are designed so you can't mod them easily.

Shame. I've been having a blast taking a screw driver to mine and modding it.

I might have to see if I can get a 19 screen cheap and try it then.

Make sure you get schematics for both. I'll bet the pin outs are different.

Yes the LCD and touchscreen is the same size but the lid is not, its close but its a little bigger. To make it work you got a big job ahead of you. I think Teo was the one that did it a few years ago or I might be thinking of something else  . With the prices of the 19's dropping so low I would trade up to one of them instead .

That is why a lot of us have switched, all the 19's are WWAN ready with m-pci-e slot, over double the ram can be installed, SATA hard drives(or ssd) and dual cores. You can reuse your 18 battery.

i would indeed seriously look for a 19 instead of upgrading the 18. It's some time ago, but I've read someone here do it and it wasn't a walk in the park. Took serious work, modding the case, soldering connections and all kinds of trouble before it would work. But that was just a screen, not the touch, not the wacom IRC.
And how are you going to get it decently waterproofed?

It is worth considering the Getac competition to Toughbook. Getac has done a great job on the sunlight readable screen on the B300.
