Attempting to use a usb WD 1TB SSD My Passport Go to clone/backup my OS/HDD and eventually use this info to clone my OS back to my new M.2 EVO SSD once it arrives.
Current HDD is a 1tb WD hybrid
When attempting to use Acronis (like i always have) the computer restarted into Acronis just fine but on operation 3 of 4, it gave me an error (i don't remember what it was)
I restarted the computer and the SSD shows up in device manager but wouldn't show up in my computer.
So i used Mini Tool Partition Wizard v 9 to delete the drive and create a new partition. The only change was now i can see the disk in my computer but can't access it.
Tried the same thing in disk management, still no luck.
The other feedback i received upon the initial restart is that i intermittently hear the "device connected/device disconnected" sound.

Silly question, did you format the new partition?
-
Isn't the WD 1 TB hybrid a dual drive inside? I put one in a CF-31 a while back and kinda remember it had to have a special driver from WD installed to boot correctly.

NOTE It's a mk4 so i'm using the 3.0.
With that being said, what should i do? -
It's just my assumption, but it's definitely not ok for device to connect-disconnect many times. Maybe it disconnects under load (write). Wd my passport doesn't need additional power usually. Try another (ok, USB 2.0) port.
Do not format it, just repeat the backup process. -

in case of backup you'll have to make drive accessible -
TheSpiritOfRadio Notebook Consultant
What I mean is, isn't the drive already formatted from the factory? Did I permanently corrupt /break the drive? I ask because when I attempt to use EaseUS, it doesn't show up.
I will also say, that just before attempting the backup, I utilized the same process to and 3.0 port to backup to a standard HDD using Acronis and it worked perfectly.Last edited: Jun 20, 2020 -
Acronis will "format" your destination drive when cloning.
For backup (as a file) you'll need a formatted drive.
IMHO, there is a chance your WD external SSD has a hardware problem (connected-disconnected sounds). And I don't think you could damage the drive. Does it show up in your device manager? -

Hmm. Ok, download WD Drive Utilities and try to recover your drive with it. Then repeat Acronis backup process.

Quick question.
Is the WD disk in GPT or MBR mode? Does "Create and format hard disk partitions" (default partition manager in W7/W8/W10) see the WD SSHD?
If you sort out the issue with the drive, if you feel comfortable enough using Linux, I can provide some tips on cloning properly and safely (if you do it right). -
TheSpiritOfRadio Notebook Consultant
I'm not familiar with Linux.
Oh , it turns out that the drive doesn't show up in "My Computer" - "Drive in accessible" anymore like it did before. don't really know/notice when that changed...
But it does still show up in device manager and disk man.Attached Files:

ok, took 5 hours via 2.0 but completed the clone successfully via Acronis. Strangely, it behaves exactly as someone else described when plugged into 3.0, disconnects and reconnects... I guess SSD require more power to stay connected/on.
When plugged back into 2.0 it show up fine.Attached Files:

What are my options as far as preventing external drives from disconnecting/reconnecting in the future, regardless of port used?

Glad it works for you.
Re intermittent disconnects - I think the easiest way is to use USB 3.0 hub with external power. Or try to lower drive's power consumption through WD Utitilies you've downloaded before. I'm not sure there is such a setting, it's just an idea -

EDIT If I can ever find the correct adapter and eventually perform the clone process, has the information i'm looking to use in this thread changed at all? It looks about 8 years old. Are there newer/more simplistic processes? and what is offset alignment?
EDIT Turns out that I will never find the right adapter. looking for a ghost

Sandisk is a part of WD, it's ok. But your drive has to work with WD software. Ask their support, it's interesting.
I don't think you have to buy additional hardware or software. There are free utilities for cloning. -

As far as adding extra power, literally impossible since this external has a permanent usb.
Is there literally no other solution to stop the external from disconnecting? -

So I installed the 860 SSD into the Toughbook and installed w7 on it. When i tried to copy my OS to it from the external SSD using Acronis, it didn't show up on the 1st page of Acronis (source drive). Then it showed up on the 2nd page (target drive) but I couldn't select it and it said not initialized. Not really sure what to do at this point other than to put the old HDD back in..... Do i need an adapter to put the 860 SSD on then copy?

I think your external drive is faulty. If it's under warranty - return it and use another one.
If you can't - buy USB(3.0)-SATA adapter and clone your drive directly.UNCNDL1 likes this. -
The one thing that looks strange for me is Samsung SSD not initialized after successful W7 installation. I would try another cloning software, maybe True Image is wrong.

With that being said, what should i choose?Attached Files:

It is asking to format Disk 3, which is your USB disk. Not tracking this thread closely enough to be sure that's what you want, but if so choose the MBR (Master Boot Record) option. This will overwrite anything that may still be there with a new partition.

Ok, if True Image wants to initialize your Samsung drive - let it. Or use another cloning software. -

OK i spoke to soon...
Receiving a fingerprint software error now after a few successful reboots.
EDIT ok after a few more restarts with no issues, it looks like everything's good.Last edited: Jun 27, 2020 -
Well, I recommend one of two options:
1. AOMEI backupper ( https://www.ubackup.com/), about 90% of time cloning worked perfectly (10% of the time, my linux installation did not clone properly). "Disk Clone" is part of freeware offer, and this is what you can use.
2. Create a USB flash drive of any linux, boot from it and use "dd" ( https://forums.opensuse.org/showthr...edure-to-an-equal-size-or-large-size-using-dd).
I always go for option 2 when I have a multi-OS installation on a drive. I use option 1 for something as simple as migrating from a HDD to SSD. -
-
It's just a 3rd party software. Max problem - have to reinstall it. Cloning is safe.
