Hi all!
Does anyone have any experience and/or knowledge regarding asset tracking of a TB equipped with WWAN and GPS?? Is there a software out there that does this using these piece of hardware equipped??? I know cellular companies have asset tracking programs for fleet management, but is there a way to do this independently without any additional paid service offerings???
Thanks!!!!

Ozi Explorer, for example.
But it's much easier and stable to use hardware Garmin (my choice is Foretrex 301/401) for tracking. -
Thanks for your response! I not looking for GPS software, Im looking for asset tracking. For example, if I have 5 mobile techs in the field with their Toughbooks equipped with WWAN and GPS, I want to be able to sit in my office and look at a map and see where the Toughbooks are located on a map.

OpenGTS is the only open source offering I found in my google search just now.
Not sure it's what you need though - wouldn't all the TB's need to be switched on all the time? -
AMReid, oh, I see.
Maybe it's also easier to use GPS GSM trackers. They are under USD 100 shipped and have their own batteries -
Would it be incidental tracking or constant tracking?
Usual dedicated trackers have a much better battery life. GSM+GPS constant on toghether with regular use on a TB would deplete the battery rather quick. I've seen trackers that track every 10 or 30 seconds and can last days. But they where custom build ones and rather expensive ones for high value containers etc.
OTOH if the mobile techs have a car with them, you could buy of the shelve trackers that are installed in cars and trucks and never need to worrie about batteries?
Oh, if the techs have an iphone, you can log in to me.com and see where they are. I'm sure other phones have this as well. -
unclemack, you are awesome. Love the open source program for this. Great suggestion.

I have often recommended Franson GPSGate as a free application to enable one GPS to serve multiple navigation programs at once. Their real business is providing the service you're looking for: http://gpsgate.com/
The issue is that any service of this sort is going to require constant, probably expensive, wireless connection to the interwebs. The smart phone solution might be workable as I'm guessing it uses data from cell towers rather than uploaded GPS data.
USING CF-30 GPS and/or WWAN for Tracking
