I cannot for the life of me figure this out, and im getting no love on the ubuntu forums.

I can install ubuntu just fine, but after i login, it just freezes and never loads the desktop. I have tried 9.04, 8.10, 8.04, 7, 6 from both normal installs and alternative, burned to both cd's and dvd's at various speeds, and even swapped out MP drives.

All the installations go great, i login, and poof. I need this thing to work today so i slapped windows xp on it, and i feel like i could cry. I havent had windows on one of my computers in like 4-5 years. UGH....

    Any ideas?

Oh and the live cd's work flawlessly.

    Nukinfuts29,

you mite have faulty memory. Boot from the ubuntu cd and do a mem test.

did you run it from the cd to see if it freezes. If it does not freeze then try changing the hard disk.

I had 9.04 on my cf-28 with no problems but I needed to put on windows because of a pice of software I need for work :(

i'll run the memtest, i think i already did but i was so tired last night i cant remember so it's worth checking again. And livecd works perfectly fine, but i already tried another hard drive to rule that out.

I think it might even be a video issue, since it happens after i enter the login credentials, but im not sure how to circumvent it.

If you don't mind me asking which peice of software forced you back over? I have had incredible success over the years getting things to work for me to avoid even a dual boot ;)

Memtest is still going strong, no errors yet. I may take a crack at a WUBI install and see if that works, give me an idea. Just for those that may not know and are following this thread WUBI is a install of Ubuntu "inside windows". Its like a more permanant version of the livecd and simulates a dual booted setting.

    nukinfuts29,

The software is for my digital audio desk is the main one. I do have another one that I wrote myself in win98 which is for stage lightting which was done in delphi which work though usb.

I have tried wine with the software for the digital audio desk but no luck
For the lightting software I have another old laptop for that runs win98.

I wish i was familiar with that kind of software. Wine can be very powerful if you take it beyond the out of the box status, but it varies from each program and without intimate knowledge i doubt i could get it working. I was hoping it would be a more common program ;)

Have you tried Lazarus? I program in a few languages but Delphi isn't in my area. I know that a lot of Delphi users found a solution in Lazarus, though.

As for my problem im getting nowhere fast. I cant figure it out, i have never seen anything like this. I tried to gui install of 9.10m but when i have time this weekend i will probably break out a copy of the alternate and see what i get. Hoping to try Wubi tonight, just keep running into more things to do lol.

nukinfuts29. Have you tried restarting the x-server? and have you tried booting in low graphics mode? have you tried KDE?

Umm... just a thought - is it possible your build of Ubuntu is defaulting to a resolution or screen refresh rate not supported by that old 915 chipset?

    mnem
    Idle thoughts...

it shouldn't, especially the older builds. Ubuntu is geared to lower machines, with the packaged ability to spread it's legs on higher end machines. I have to clean this office today, hopefully i will have time to play with some of these ideas.

    nukinfuts29,

you could also try xubuntu. it works well on CF-m34 with only 300mhz and 128mb of ram. It run very well. I would say better than win98 on this toughbook.

I dont have it, it a friends and he wanted ubuntu but it would not work as it needed more ram. so there went xubuntu and he is as happy as a pig in muck.

I'll check that out too. I have Ubuntu running as a dual boot with Windows 7 on two of the other 28's, same spec, for employees so this one has me pulling my hair out :D

Going to give xubuntu a shot. If it works i will settle for it, but i know my OCD is going to go into overdrive because my personal laptop and the toughbook wont match LOL.

The most annoying thing for me right now is that my encrypted hard drive had to be moved to FAT to accomodate the windows OS and anything involving windows isnt as secure. On top of that it doesn't support long filenames....ugh thats bugging my ocd way more then xbuntu ever will.

I'm the most damaged, anal, eccentric computer nerd u will ever meet

We have XUbuntu working, thank god. That was a solid idea, and for the sake of archiving for any future users i installed XUbuntu 8.04 from the primary desktop cd.

The touchscreen is working out of the box, but its calibration is WAY off. I spent the time since my last post following modly's posts (and a few others) hoping to get her calibrated and im getting nowhere. If i touch center screen it goes directly to the bottom left hand corner, but after that it is just spuratic.

I also get no change in pointer speed for the touchpad when i raise it up. Any ideas on getting the touchscreen working right? One of the threads actually tanked my entire xserver, but luckily im well versed in the use of a terminal hehe.

I kept XP on here in a dual boot since i have more then enough space to justify it, so im going to bed knowing i can still work tomorrow hehe. Thanks all for the help getting this far, that was insane. See if we can't pull out another good idea and get the TS calibrated.
