Just finished setting up my CF-30 dual boot XPPro/ Ubuntu 10.10.
    DIFFERENCES
    1. No touchpad tweak necessary.
    2. Not necessary to mess with X stuff as in post 1.

    Do this:
    freedesktop.org - Software/xinput_calibrator
Click Debian Testing and allow Ubuntu Software Installer to load the package.
    Go to [System][Administration]calibrate touchscreen
    Touch 4 x's
    Save the snippet in /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/99-calibration.conf
    code:
save re-boot check and you should be good to go.

Yes I did? Also checked out the nomenclature at Wiki and figured it out.
I wish I could bump the RAM in this box but I guess it'll do for my means.
I should have 10.10 on my new 750g drive by morning, then playing with the touchscreen by afternoon.
    Thanks again.

Ok, got my 750g hdd in and 10.10 up and running.
10.10 is running update manager right now, 216 updates  .
I used the touchpad tweak and it worked perfectly.......compared to what I had after the 10.10 install, 1mm per swipe.
I am not having any luck with xinput_calibrator though.
I downloaded it but I don't know how to install in using GUI, so I tried to grab it with command terminal and I get temporarily unavailable.
    Commands I used are;
    sudo add-apt-repository ppa:tias/xinput-calibrator-ppa

    sudo apt-get update

    sudo apt-get install xinput-calibrator
E: Could not get lock /var/lib/dpkg/lock - open (11: Resource temporarily unavailable)
E: Unable to lock the administration directory (/var/lib/dpkg/), is another process using it?

Do I have resources censored? I thought I had them open to receive other sources.

As a guess if you are running updates that just means the download program is busy.

When update is done...go to post 1 of this thread click the freedesktop link, click where it says Debian Testing Mentors, click allow Ubuntu installer to install the file. Go to admin and calibrate touchscreen should be there. Just a guess on some of this but it is up there somewhere.

I'm on XP testing a new touch screen. I'll edit in a minute if I am significantly wrong.

First off, I goofed a bit.
While I was running updates I was entering terminal commands when I should have just waited for the updates to install. A reboot was needed after the updates and I got the black screen.
    So I started all over.
Full 10.10 install, full update install then the xinput_calibration.
The first time I went to the xinput site I didn't see the installer. This time I did and the install was fine. Unfortunately the screen is not seeing my touch at all so calibration is not possible, yet.
Then I fixed the touchpad again, so now I need to see why my touchscreen is not working.
With the W7 OS loaded the screen would react to my touch but not nearly accurate, touch the center of the screen and got a calender or trash can.

    If anyone is annoyed by the 10.10 button layout for the windows;
    Press Alt+F2
    Enter "Gconf-editor"
    Click "enter"
    Click "apps"
    Scroll down to "Metacity"
    Then "general"
    Scroll down to button layout.
Edit the right column to read "menu:minimize, maximize, close"
    Then click enter

This puts your button layout on the normal side.

If you have no touchscreen in 10.10 and your W7 goes down and right you have a bad touchscreen. Sorry about that but I think that is the issue.

Yep, the touchscreen is dead, the sound card is dead (or the speakers, I haven't tried headphones) and the IDE/SATA adapter is broke.

    Or...........it could always be better.

A tip from a friend. I uninstalled the touchscreen in W7 device manager as well as drivers, rebooted and whalah!
I now have the touchscreen but the cursor hides when I touch the screen.
A credit card in the screen chassis has the cursor chasing my card like a gold-digger. I'll loosen the screws, scape and blow out the crust.
    Should be good soon.
I did break my sata adapter so no Ubuntu for the moment until I fabricate a better HDD caddy system.

Not to be a pessimist but IMHO you have at least one broken circuit in the touchscreen panel. I really hope you prove me wrong. I mean this.

I thought the following up while removing and replacing (and inspecting) touch panels.
    1. You have the bezel.
    2. You have the adhesive.
    3. Then comes the thicker piece of plastic/glass laminate with circuits taped to it. You know that burglar alarm tape? It's like that.
4.Then a thinner piece of plastic laminate with a circuit taped to it.
    5. Down in one corner is a ribbon cable with four conductors. What this looks like to me is four lines drawn on adhesive tape with a circuit writer pen. If the tape is bent sharply, there goes at least one circuit. I actually partially repaired one at one time using fine wire in place of the "printed" circuit. It worked better but was too ugly by the time I finished so I gave up.
    6. The two pieces of plastic laminate are joined together and glued at the edges with the backs of the circuit tapes facing each other.
    7. That goes into the bezel and is followed by the LCD which has a rubber "gasket" facing the laminates.

Here's what I'm getting at. I speculate that strength of the adhesive on the back of the bezel keeps the front laminate from moving while the rubber gasket sets up a suction I'll call it and as it expands and contracts with heat/cold it literally de-laminates the touch panel. Speculation I said....no proof.
Your credit card is pushing the laminates back together but is temporary. The damage is done. When you pull the card the "joint" opens up and you are back to broken.
You can check this out by splitting the back, rolling the LCD out of the way and inspecting the entire perimeter of laminate with a magnifying glass. You may see it, you may not. The two layers of gray on gray tape make it hard to find. It may be repairable if you are patient.
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/panasonic/536758-cf-18-touchscreen-problem.html#post6930307
The ones that I have seen (I'm only talking ten or so here((I'm no expert))) showed the worst damage at the bottom or were disabled by a crease in the ribbon tape. I inadvertently oops one day and pulled one of the ribbon tapes out of the panel but then tested it and found no continuity beyond where it had been creased.

    Forevermore what it's worth.

    Good hunting.

Just wanted to say thanks again GORK. As of right now got everything tweaked on my dual boot. I am typing this on Ubuntu 10.10 at the London airport waiting on my flight to Dubai. Right before I left the house my 100GB 7200RPM hard drive came in so I get to do it all again when I get home, lol.

    Note of caution:
I bumped up to 2.6.35-25 yesterday and had slow crawly issues. Rolled it back to 2.6.35-24 and all is well again.
Then I loaded Ubuntu Tweak and cleaned house. I think I'll stay here for a bit.
    Anyone else have issues?

A much better way of repairing these type breaks is to use conductive paint. Auto parts stores should carry defroster grid repair kits. These have a small bottle with copper "paint" You can use this to bridge the breaks in the circuit traces. A good electronics store will have silver based conductive paint. That also works very well. I have been using this stuff for many years with very good results.

I have a CF-72 and just finished upgrading 10.4 to 10.10. I have everything working, but can't get the touchscreen calibrated.

The touchscreen responds to touch and will move the mouse pointer, but will not click. When I try to run the calibration tool it won't accept the clicks so the program times out and gives me a generic calibration file.

I know it is not a fault of the screen as I Dual-boot to XP and everything is spot on.

    Any suggestions?

    DMstone,
    Did you read this?
I recommend doing a fresh install and check the boxes to upgrade during install. Once you are installed do the psmouse (touch pad) tweak. Upgrade again then re-boot.
Now down-load calibration tool from software center.
The post re: the snippet is up there somewhere POST 23.(Edit)
IOW I had trouble with upgrade from 10.4, so saved my personal settings to USB stick, did fresh install and once it was all working brought personal files back if needed.
    Keep me posted.(pun intended)

I had read it, but I thought that might have become outdated and was hoping for a work around. I have been trying to get this computer to dual boot linux on and off for a couple of years now so I am hesitant to reinstall after I finally have everything else working.

I'll give it a try though. Thanks for the prompt reply.

There would be a work-around if someone would sit down and figure out which files to lose. It takes a little sitting and thinking and I have been distracted by other issues.
Check the Ubuntu sites on how to purge un-needed files. That may help. I forget the command but you can find it. It shows up once in a while on a download using apt-get install.
O.K. I went and looked at bleachbit .....check it out. It seems I ran it once and it wanted to lose the calibrator.

    Post your xorg.log please.

Better yet compare it with this excerpt:

This is the kernel being written and the /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d is the snippet being read for the touchscreen.
Also look for the part re: PS/2 mouse. It will be toward the end of the xorg.log. That would interest me. The PS/2 is what drives the touchpad, touchscreen and keyboard.

    [System][Administration]Log File Viewer.....Xinput issues?

    Fresh Install 10.10 on CF-30
Boot from 10.10 Live CD and select Install.
Check the boxes to upgrade during installation.
    Wait about three hours.
    To install calibrator:
    freedesktop.org - Software/xinput_calibrator
Click where it says Debian Testing.
Use Software Center to install the .deb file.
Run calibrator. It's in [System][Administration]Calibrate Touchscreen
One terminal will be open with the snippet information.
    Open another terminal and
Cut and paste snippet information into the blank file .........99-calibration-conf.
    [Save]
    Re-boot
    Ummmm your done.

    Mouse tweak no longer necessary!

    SAMPLE SNIPPET BELOW
--> Making the calibration permanent <--
copy the snippet below into '/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/99-calibration.conf' USE /usr/share/X11/ and so on instead.
    Let us know.

hello i have recently come across this forum looking for the touchscreen calibration for ubuntu 10.10 ive managed to calibrate the screen and proceeded to sudo gedit the conf file but everytime i reboot after saving the file it hangs at a "checking battery status" message, it hangs at that screen every time until i ctrl + alt f1 and login and remove the created file and reboot again it then proceeds into the gui as normal. has anyone else ran into this problem ? or is it just me? any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Just you. :)
Has this been since you modified the file?
Can you send me a copy of the file that you are creating as well as where you are saving it.
Do I understand that you have the calibration tool in System Admin? Also under System Admin is Log File viewer. Send the first twenty lines of Xorg.0.log too. Those lines tell you where the system is getting extra config info. And don't use config. Use .conf. I suspect a typo.
    Thanks.

. Your kernel version is antiquated.2.6.35-22 is what I have up on my CF-30. And I just did a fresh install on a 29 Mark 5. Let me check what it did. 2.6.35-27- generic-pae as of today.

Believe it or not the intel driver update is a good thing. I had a partial black screen before the update and had to tack i915.modeset=1 on the kernel version in menu after "quiet splash".
After doing the glasen thing and update and upgrade 10.4 loads with no additions.
Whether or not this cures your problem it is a good thing over-all. I am as I said before on a Mark 2 CF-29F. This is for 955GM chip-set only.

I appreciate all of the help.... i feel like an idiot lol a very simple problem that i had overlooked many times the information in 99-calibration.conf was all complete EXCEPT for End Section. after i added that part everything is working fine now, altho it apparently changed my theme or something the "taskbar" is a different color and some of the icons on the taskbar appear to be different as well

Excellent. With 10.10 they seem to have added all the intel drivers and such and it gets better and better.
I was looking for a typo of some kind. In one of the forums I was reading today they were using x11 all over the place and as you and I know it's X11.
My theme changes every once in a while to keep me interested.
I'm playing with a frozen mouse pointer and dead KB. So I'm upgrading again hoping it wii re-write a config file some idiot deleted. What I was trying to try was using the 10.10 TS calibrator in 10.4. No joy thus far.
But good show for you mate.

    Jeff....keep in touch (pun intended)

10.10 working well on CF-51. Added Kodak ESP5250 Linux driver. The CF-51 also likes Kubuntu Live CD and Ubuntu 10.04.

You omitted "Re-boot" from the earlier post - anyone who didn't get to the later one might find themselves frustrated by their change not having effect.

As it happens, you can experiment with values without rebooting, by unloading and reloading the module:

    Code:
    jmb@dwalin:~$ sudo rmmod psmouse
    jmb@dwalin:~$ sudo modprobe psmouse resolution=400
