as there is no "general disgustings" section in this forum , i figured this is the best shot .

i just tried out the OS as mentioned in the title on my CF-30 ... mostly because of the inclusion of the MATE desktop instead of a fisher-price GUI .
the second reason was to see if this version would automatically recognize (or at least have a set of real drivers) for my new brother HL-3170CDW laser printer .
yeah ... it looks pretty , has bells and whistles but is dysfunctional in some areas ... just like a couple of my old girlfriends .
after the updates , then setting up the lower task bar and getting rid of the "stock" top one , i looked for a couple of items ...
i tried installing the printer ... no go ... i have to install it by going to the brother site and getting the *real* driver pack set up from them (same as with the linux mint) .
next was installing a couple of programs ... i discovered that the software search is sort of broken , this is the same thing that has happened on a couple of other ubuntu builds .

it looks like i will be sticking with mint 13 or 17 with the MATE desktop .

I like the MATE desktop! Here's the current STABLE version of Linux Mint LMDE 201403,
    Mate version which I am using on a CF-52 & CF-30:

I would hope that after you updated the above version, that your printer drivers would work properly.
There is a newer LMDE version available BUT, it is UNSTABLE and I do NOT suggest you try it:

However, you could run it as a "live usb" and see if it works for you.
    Best regards,
    Cleve

    whoops ...
i included the '30 in the body of the text but i cannot edit the topic title .

i gave up on updating the gfs ... too much hassle for the return on investment .
besides , it aint my job to fix 'em !

as far as it goes ... i have tried the new ubutu flavor on another machine with the same results .

i have tried out the LMDE version(s) and a couple of others ... for some reason i always gravitated back to mint .

I never got the doggone printer to actually print! All it would do is run endless blank pages out. I really like Mint 17.1 too.

Have you tried LXLE? I use it as well as mint, kinda partial to the cinn flavor mint myself. I've been running it HDD dual boot installed on my non-touch screen 74 and it actually seems to run faster than my mint side does. I've tried it live usb on my 30 and it works quite well. But again that unit is another non-touch at this time. It has multiple GUI's to select from and is basically Lubuntu with better legacy support. I run it solely on my I-mac. Found every driver out of the box. Even Mint didn't find the bluetooth keyboard drivers out of the box.

weeelll ... i plugged my mint 13 hdd back in and am back to being able to print with the brother printer .
i have tried a couple of versions of LXLE ... i do like them but there were a couple of shortcomings and hence i went back to mint .

    @ kerry :
i remember seeing the same symptom , voiced by others , that you mentioned while i was looking for a solution to the driver/installation problem with my printer .
what is the make and model of your printer ?

more about the '30 'nix install ...
as i was not in need of "wireless" printing , i never gave a thought to testing out those capabilities .
i may look into this over the weekend if i i have the time and wherewithal to do so .
a problem i ran into with installing the brother drivers/software was finding instructions that were correct ...
i finally found the instructions that were right for mint (and a couple of other flavors of 'nix) .

This was win7 but it's somewhat relevant.
When I got my Samsung CL320 printer, wireless would not work.
    Never could find the printer.
I went rounds with the drivers and settings and met with total fail.
Then I plugged the printer into the wireless router via Ethernet cable.
BAM..it worked perfectly..Yesterday I even printed something directly from my smart phone.

Just for those that haven't tried today’s Linux. It is pretty much as point and click as Win and Mac. But when you try a live distro, keep in mind that they can't ship EVERY driver for EVERY item out there. So you get the full bang when you do a install and have the system update as it installs and also select to use 3rd party and proprietary drivers. Makes a big difference.
