Just installed a 20G hd in the 300Mhz '27..Loaded Win 2000 on it, no sweat... figured that since the hd was clean except for the Win 2k, it would be a great time to try loading the Linux on it and compare the two...

It's been hrs,and I mean HRS since it started...There is still both CD and HD activity going on, but other than the brown swirl background, overlayed with the grey, nothing shows.. Any ideas?? hate to stop it if it's just copying files since the memory isn't that big on this machine..

    Thanks !!

Ed, I just reinstalled XP and then added Ubuntu to an old desktop my gf wants to use (she didn't ask for Ubuntu LOL). Adding Linux took about 30 minutes or so. This machine is more up to date than yours, but I can't imagine yours needing so long to install. Not sure of the minimum requirements, but maybe even Ubuntu requires something a bit stronger than your machine. I'm going to take a look and see if I can find out. BBL

Semper Fi back at you! USMC 7/67-11/83 - yeah, I'm old. LOL

    Edit:

    Bare Minimum requirements

It should be possible to get Ubuntu running on a system with the following minimum hardware specification, although it is unlikely that the system would run well. You should use the Alternate install CD to attempt such an installation.

    *

    300 MHz x86 processor
    *

64 MB of system memory (RAM)
    *

At least 4 GB of disk space (for full installation and swap space)
    *

VGA graphics card capable of 640x480 resolution
    *

    CD-ROM drive or network card

Looks like your system probably just meets the system requirements, Ed. Did you try the Live CD before trying the install? If so, and it worked, can't think of any reason why you're having problems. Just out of curiosity, did you partition the drive manually, or are you allowing Ubuntu to do it for you - not that it would really make much difference, but perhaps there's a partitioning error?

BTW, there's a pretty active Linux bunch at NBR. You might get better answers than mine by people a lot smarter if you have a mod move your thread to the Linux forums. If interested, just PM any mod online at the moment and I'm sure you'll get help quickly.

Ya, you should try a lightweight distro, like Fluxbuntu, Crunchbag, etc.

Well, there is plenty of disk space..20Gig, less whatever Win2k wanted...No I let it partition it..So maybe that is where the hold up/problem is.. Will see today..

Tell me othese other, lighter versions of Linux....

USMC 1971-1992 here...6124/6114/6125/8511/8411, oh heck you get the idea..Hueys and Cobras most of the time.. :)
