    Hi All,

I am faced with a delema... I Have a CF-28 with the 12Inch touch screen and i just dont use it. It is rather unusable at 800x600 which is a shame because it works rather well and is in great condition.

Now, Should i just find a 13inch touchscreen and swap it or is it worth getting a cf-19 instead?
I know someone who has a CF-29CTKGZDM for sale but it does not have a HDD/Caddy or power adaptor and wants 200$
    worth it?

I would much rather get the 13inch screen upgrade if the money is right

    Thoughts?

    Andre

    Model Number: CF-29CTKGZDM
    Status: DISCONTINUED
    MSRP: $4,488

Description: Pentium M 1.2GHz ULV (Centrino), 13.3" Transmissive Touch Screen, 40GB HDD, 256 MB Base RAM, 56K Modem, 10/100 LAN, Floppy Disk Drive, Intel PRO Wireless LAN, Windows 2000 Professional

While $200 isn't a bad price, you are looking at another $100+ for a hard drive caddy, plus the cost of a hard drive.

As to the power adapter; "chump change". ;)

Also, if the CF-28 has a CD-ROM or DVD drive it will work in the CF-29.

    thanks Topcop

Unfortunately, my cf-28 does not have a CD Rom... i never bothered to get a caddy for it since i never use it...
I ended up buying a Cf-18 instead but now i find i could use that cf-28 for something if it had a better screen...

Now, i cant find just a screen, at least not in my area... Im seriously thinking about that cf-29 but the cost of the Hard drive and caddy is kind of a deal breaker...

Ah Funny, the picture does not match the description, this is a 12inch screen... but it does have the WWAN antenna...

    Yup!

I've since gleaned the unit's Model Number from another of his auctions:

    Model Number: CF-28PBJGBQM
    Status: DISCONTINUED
    MSRP: $4,896
    Description: PIII 800MHz, 256, 30GB, 12.1" TF, FDD, CINGULAR, 56K/LAN, XP/2000

My advice is this; as I have one of each myself.

If your CF-28 is a Mk1 (600mhz), it's pretty limited; max RAM is 384M, so really not going to run anything newer than Win2000 worth a dang. I'd save that unit for a *NIX box and leave it as is, or you could do what I'm going to do with mine and load Quimo (an educational-oriented *NIX build) on it for my son.

If it's a Mk2(800mhz) or Mk3(1000mhz) it will support up to 768M RAM; it will run XP quite happily, as long as you don't abuse it with active Virus protection or too many crapwares installed. That is worth the expense of a complete 13.3" lid; I've seen them on eBay for 35$-45$ shipped.

    Yes, Facebook is crapware.

Or you could get a complete CF-29 Mark I for $295. That's all the pieces. Mk 2,3,4,5 slightly higher. I have 'em and they are for sale!

I would really like to do this but im trying to keep the price down; becides, shipping costs would be quite high not to mention the border fees...
I just bought a cf-18 and had to pay quite a bit for a caddy/HDD and a new battery...

Anyone have a 13.3 cf-28 touch screen they would like to sell me? Maybe something off of an MK1?

Ok, i did some experimenting and probably screwed my existing screen but here is what i did:
Found a similar LCD panel which was also 12inches but did support a higher resolution.
So i thought why not swap them.

The result: It kind of worked; i got the screen in there and it does power up and the back light works but i may have damaged it in the swap... ill see if i can buy another one and test it to see if it will work...

Any one else have experience swapping these? (an original 12 for another 12 with the same connector)

I have a bunch of CF-28 parts. Send me a PM and I'll fix you up with a good CF-28 13.3" touchscreen for cheap!

Sorry for the late response Springfield...
I ended up buying a used cf-28 1G for less than 80$ on ebay and rebuilt my current CF-28 by swapping the Motherboard, monitor. I used my existing Screen cover and top case cover since they were in better shape.
Now all is well, the cf-28 i bought even came with the emmisive keyboard (not soft touch). It also came with the Lan/Modem side cover whereas my current one only had the modem port so that was a plus, now i can use my combo card and wifi cart without occupying a PCMCIA slot...

Only Problem is, the screen protector is in bad shape... ill need a new one of those soon but im not sure where to get them.

You can get the OEM Panasonic one from Heartland for around $70 - but most here on the forum seem to feel the Screenpatronus version from eBay for $25 works just as well:
    Screen Protector Panasonic Toughbook CF-73 CF-28 CF-29 | eBay

Screenpatronus specifies different ones for the 28/29 than the 30/31. I have taken one of their 28/29 versions and put it on top of an OEM one from a CF-30 and couldn't measure or see any size difference at all.

Because of idiots like me who need one for a 30, already own a new one for a 29 but order a new one labeled for the CF-30 -- assuming if they label them differently they must be different
