I might have mis-understood what you were asking. For the price of....free you can load a simple Linux Distro to the system you are already using. You will be pleasantly surprised as to how brisk even the slowest of processors are on older systems. I would start with a Linux system such as this:
Linux Mint 13 "Maya" - Xfce (32-bit) - Linux Mint
    Best regards...

Spring for a CF-30... Go for fast hardware... Not fast software. You need an upgrade!

    Please... Gainsaver.... Please....

Are you are asking about upgrades to the CF-28 you already own? Cannot change the processor speed (without swapping motherboard), but you can replace your removable stick of 256MB ram with 512MB ram for 768MB total, but it is very picky on what kind. Can also add an internal wifi with some work. Cleve has a strong point that lightweight Linux will make your 28 run faster, if you're not married to Windows XP.

Details on the above and many other CF-28 mods is easy to find on this forum, also over at ToughBookTalk.com

I still have 2 CF-28's. Mk2 with 800 mhz CPU and Mk3 with 1Ghz CPU. One has 80 gb hard drive, the other a ssd with a adapter. Both have 768 mb of ram. One has the original 350 wireless the other broadcom card. I use to use it for casual web surfing at work. But since then I have got CF-29, CF-30, CF-18, CF-19. They rarely even get turned on anymore. The 800 mz machine is my first toughbook so it will be sticking around. The other 28 was my "ultimate" 28 I was building. (emissive keyboard, gps, wireless, etc) on how I would of ordered it if I would of got one new. Even though it's fixed up nice it just doesn't get used. IF, IF you want to upgrade we will gladly give you advice/opinions on what will work best. BUT if you do decide to upgrade I would jump right over the CF-29/18 units and go straight to the CF-30/19 units. You will not be sad you did. Nothing wrong with 29/18 units but the dual cores really wake the toughbooks up on what you can do. Hell I can play PORTAL on my CF-30/19's lol. Even the graphics have a bigger jump up.

What I have now is Pentium III and 800 Mhz and it says 526 Mhz
504 MB ram. I am guessing that is the norm for this one? I don't remember buying an extra 256 one? I did have to buy a HD.
I think that an upgraded memory might help a little to speed it up because I have opened PDF files and run out of it and then some do fine.
I was thing that 512 was a for as I could go with it but will look into the other one. I also need to look back at the manual. Right now I am guessing it has two sticks in it? It has been a long time from when I was inside it.
    Thanks

Probably has 256MB soldered to the mobo plus 1 stick of 256MB PC-133, you can see it under the battery. It shows 504MB now because 8MB memory is shared with the video.

What is your full model number? Batteries are one main thing that forced a lot of people to upgrade. But back to your CF-28. What OS do you want to run? What programs do you plan on running? Check out Nlite. It allows you to burn a custom xp install disk cutting out the fat you don't want. I have one version cut down to a 88mb install ISO. Touch won't work with it but anything your run, runs like hell. I think you can cut a ISO down to about 450 to 500 mb and still have a OS that looks like XP and everything works. Ram, hard drive/ssd and OS are going to be your best three upgrades. This coming up week is my last week in. I will be doing some benchmarking on a 1.8" SATA SSD attached to a 2.5" IDE adapter in a CF-M34 Mk7, CF-28 Mk2 and CF-27 Mk2 just to see what how a full install of a OS runs on it. I will have to bench mark a hard drive first then pop in the SSD with the adapter to see if their are any real gains. Been playing with adapters on some of my older machines just to see what they will do from time to time.

OK where is the model number?? Damn I feel dumb as this moment :(
What is on the bottom is this and it should be it.
    CF28P3JGZQM
So can it be upgraded to more ram? If so will it help speed it up some or not? And if so what will work in it?

The Mk2 can handle a 512M memory stick for 768M total, BUT only certain kinds of low-density 512M memory will work like Kingston, Crucial brand. I think I bought about 4 sticks before I found one that worked. The 28 is very picky when it comes to memory.

Thanks for the eBay link. I do know that buying items like this if not pulled out and handled correct can be chancy but the fist one on the list and the seller look ok and free shipping to boot. So will it work if its is ok that is or will all of them work???
I am ready to buy as long as it is the correct one.

    Thanks

I was reviewing posts, and since the above link will NOT work for a CF-28 P3 800 MHz I wanted to update you. I tried many different older versions of Linux & Ubuntu on a MK3 Cf-28, and the only older Linux versions I could load that would work was Mint 9 and Navigatrix 0.4.
Mint 9 is found here: http://www.linuxmint.com/edition.php?id=52
    Nav 0.4 found here: http://navigatrix.net/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=643
You'll have to scroll down to post #8 in the above link and download the iso. The only way I could make a dvd that would work was to make it in Linux. Others have had similar problems. These two operating systems do work, and in my humble opinion, work better than a stock (bloated) XP on a CF-28. For the cost of shipping, I can burn an iso and send you a bootable dvd install disk if needbe. Cheers.
