I need a non-proprietary (meaning no MS) way to get video out of my CF-29 into a TV or a projector.
I think that I may be able to hook from the external monitor port to our projector but the other two places I need to do this do not have that option.
I need RCA or S-video for one location and need RCA to my video-transmitter at the other.
The purpose is to put music lyrics on the TV, or a streaming music video with lyrics, or some other similar type of video (and audio).
I can get the audio from the headphone jack, video is the challenge!

Doc, Look into a Patriot Box Office or something similar. It can stream anything on your network to a TV by wireless or hard cable connections, and a lot more. An x-box can do the same, but you did say no microsoft

Try one of these. DVD Margi. Make sure you get the dongle with it.

That sure would be a good alternative ... except it is over 5 year-old technology and the only app that I could find that claims to interface with it under Linux, "margiplayer", appears to be unobtanium.
Sure appreciate the suggestion!
Meanwhile I found this: Newegg.com - Patriot Box Office All-in-one Media Player with HDMI PCMPBO25
Not as small but paired with this: Newegg.com - TRENDnet TEW-647GA IEEE 802.11b/g, IEEE 802.11n Draft 2.0 Ethernet Port Wireless Gaming Adapter Up to 300Mbps Wireless Data Rates 64/128-bit WEP (Hex & ASCII), WPA-PSK/WPA2-PSK (AES/TKIP)
it is wireless-N and does it all!
OK, I am getting a little nuts about this ... -

I don't know why you call it an oldie, they have only been out for less than a year. I've got one and other than a somewhat confusing GUI is has yet to let me down. I don't use it as a network player, I put a 500GB Samsung drive in it and transfer my files from a thumb drive. It will handle an amazing range of formats and will work well for both music and still photos as well as video. Most of my problems have been with the Linux type operating system on the box. Check out their user forum, best $70 I've spent in a long time. By the way, if you can't tell from the picture this thing is tiny, only about 3 times the size of a 2.5" hard drive. I too got a little nuts when I finally moved from a 20" Sony CRT straight to a 42" Panasonic Plasma flat screen this spring. The reason I thought this would work for you is it doesn't care what OS your computer is running, no need for MS Zune or the like.

Sorry, I misinterpreted a date stamp on a review!
Here is an excellent review:

Looking more closely it seems that the best combo is the Patriot box and the Trendnet Wifi -- since the matching Wifi for the Patriot box appears to max-out at Wireless-G and Wireless-N is better suited to the task.
Total cost for both, including the rebate and free shipping, from Newegg is $105.
Sooooo tempting ... Hmmm ... what can I sell from my Amateur Radio toys to pay for them? -

Even more reason to not use one of these cards. -
I know Doc does not want to use the Margi card, and that's fine.
I just want to keep the info correct, There are XP drivers for this card. I have them and I have installed it on a HP Omnibook laptop. So it does work on non Dell machines and on XP. I also found the Linux Margiplayer, Linux drivers and I have the whole package. It is far from the latest and greatest technology, but it is simple and gets the job done for me for $25.00. I think I paid less for mine.
I did forget about the ZV pcmcia port requirement though. I don't know which Toughbooks have that. It has me curious though.
Officially the CF27 has a zv port. Other sites said the 28 29 and 18 do also. I may have to install it in my 29 and find out. -
I'd love to get a-hold of the Linux software -- I searched a good deal and ran into dead links everywhere I tried. I'd like to see if the app will run under one of the versions of Linux we are using here. Even if I cannot use it I'd forward it to the Puppy folks so they could archive it for others.
For $25. for the card if someone tells me it should work in a CF-29 it may be worth a try.
We have a HP Omnibook xe4400s but the video appears to be toasted and I doubt I am likely to find a replacement motherboard.
We also have a Toshiba Tecra TE-2100, bad video in it too -- waiting on the warranty replacement of a defective repair video sub-board -- don't know it the card might work after that -- if the video card was even really the whole problem!
If I cannot get the HP or Toshiba to work I may part them out or see about swapping them for one working laptop.
Our other laptops are a CF-28, Z500, and ACER Aspire -- no idea about compatibility there.
No Dell laptops here. No desktop PC's here. -
PM sent about Linux. I will try it in a XP environment on my CF 29 this weekend.

I received this Private but thought others may have experience and ideas and may benefit from it:
