The wife piece has a W8 ewezzam. WIFI switch is on but the system thinks it's off. Went to the intel proset connection utility to trouble shoot but it won't even talk to me since it thinks the switch is off. Any ideas?

I've got no idea about the W8, but the CF-51 has a software switch that can accidently be turned off. If it is off it looks like an orange circle with a red slash through it in the tray (lower right hand side with the time etc) on WinXP. I'm not sure what/where it would be for Win7. It's a simple right click select to change the setting from off to on. Otherwise I'm not sure, loose/bad card inside maybe? Good luck!

    Thanks, I'll take a look.

edit: OK, that got the hardware switch on, but proset's manual diagnostic now reports the software switch is off.

Are you using the latest version of proset? If not update it and see what happens. Otherwise try letting M$ manage wireless connections instead of proset. If M$ is happy then I'd say leave it unless you want proset, which you could switch back to once you had M$'s wireless connection stuff working so you know the wireless card itself is good.

Or you could get rid of ProSet. There's a reason why most of us don't use it, its a piece of dreck.

It's certainly not melting my butter right now. The button to turn on wifi is missing and the option to turn control over to windows is grayed out. WTH, over. There is a setting somewhere that I'm just not seeing.

    The easiest solution:
Down the latest driver for your wireless adapter from Intel's web site. Driver only, no ProSet, you'll see both options.
Save the whole driver file someplace convenient.
Delete ProSet completely in "Add and Remove Programs"
Double click on the driver file.
The driver file is an executable applet, it will find your card, install itself, and pass control over to Windows. The "wireless networks available" notice will pop up on your desktop and away you go. EZ

Winner! Didn't even need the driver. "Wireless networks found" popped up even before revo was done blowing out proset. Thanks capt.
