Does Panasonic make one?....Do thye make any external /USB/2.5 HDD enclosures?
I have seen aftermarket WIFI ones..
Macally,,Apple,,SMC made an IDE ,,,,Various generics...

Any thoughts on getting one? Tips? Tricks?
Does the drive stay powered all the time? Spinning if you use a platter drive..

I would assume it would have a sleep function available from the computer it is tethered to. Don't know.

I'm using WDC Mybook USB drive. 3.5" HDD inside.
It has it's own power saving settings and sleeps when there is no access.
Re standalone - it's a NAS. They are too expensive or too slow.

I just bought a NAS,prices have dropped a lot and it will take four drives up to 4TB each. About $270 + drives.

I'm in the range of (1)2.5" drive. Just a basic setup. No built in router or anything extra needed.

    That's right.
If you already have one of the modern routers - you can connect simple USB HDD directly to that router and get standalone NAS functionality.
My Linksys E4200 has a very slow USB port (up to 5MB/s), so I'm using it for printer sharing only. But newer ones (like ASUS etc.) are much better and usually have 2 USB ports and even USB 3.0.

I think it's much more interesting to buy something like HP Proliant Microserver instead of NAS :)

Looks like some plug into my existing router/modem...works like my printer.....it's wireless through the router/modem, not by it's own wifi...

Transfer rate will be too low between Wi-Fi NAS and Wi-Fi client. Max 1/2 of transfer rate between wired NAS and Wi-Fi client.
