Anyone has the same?
I wonder what WWAN card is inside, is it recent like gobi,or is it an older card?
can i put a newer card in the sled?
It is for use in Europe, so it has to be a card with four frequency's
So if anyone can give me the type and number for this card, i can google for the specs![]()
-
It was shipped with a Cingular GPRS Modem if that helps. It also has 256mb of onboard ram which seems to be the new holy grail.
CAP -
I wasn't aware of the Holy Grail on the time i bought it (3 weeks ago, it is on hold by customs for the moment), so that was a lucky shot
Is it possible to switch the modem with a newer one? i am not so familiar with terms as rev0 or revA -
Rob/JB007 seems to be the expert on WWAN and Rick knows the ins and outs of the sleds.
CAP -
Yes, I have one. It the best unit I now have. I loaded the OS and installed the Novatel Wireless Expedite EU730 software inserted my at&t sims and was on line.
I would like to install a faster modem or switch it to Verizon rev a . I tried to install a mc5725 sierra wireless with no luck -
Is it the EU730 inside?
This card will give only gprs in Europe, so i have to upgrade for a EU740 card -
BTW... This is a great seller. I have bought serveral IBM small form factor PC's from him as well. -
Thanks,
if you find a faster cart that works, let me know, i have time (stupid customs in Belgium probably think its a bomb inside)
-
Denrosten,
I have got one of these laptop from him and it has a 3g modem in it and the model of it is EU730 so far it works here very well. Were I live I cannot get 3g singal. I will test it next week and report back.
As far as I also know the freq of 3g is 2100Mhz in europe and is the same in the US. So you should have no problems with it.
Denrosten were are you from.
there is one network (moblie Phone provider) in ireland that it will not work with because the sim cards are diffrent and that is 3.
You will be very happy with it as it will look like new. -
Thanks for the reply, i have to wait on arrival of the machine to see of it works with Vodafone here (it is a Proximus card, they work together with Vodafone) as they use 2 freq. here 900 and 2100 for 3g (the only one in Europe for the moment, covering is 98%)
Btw. is it simlock free? -
Denrosten,
I have spent most of the week looking for the vodafone mobile connect. the full version not the cut down version the come with there 3g usb sticks. They do have a full veriosn that will support EU730 Card and it does work as I am using my pre paid 3g broadband sim card with no problems
I had to load panasoinc drivers for the modem first then load vodafones software. I should be able to help you to get the same software from vodafone. -
I also have the Lite version of Vodafone, so if you have the full version, i can send you money (pay-pal) for sending it to me.
or if you have a place to download it, send me a pm
Thanks in advance,
Derick -
Derick,
You can download it from vodafone for free. It just took me a while to find it. I will look for the link later and send you a PM with the link in it. -
Thanks, rep added

handy info! ive been looking atthese machines too!
just a shame they dont have the touch screen!
-
mattpayne,
I have a hp tablet pc/laptop abit like CF-18. I only use the touchscreen when use it as a tablet.
If you buy the one from play it agin pc. I would say you are buying a grade A laptop. -
Change the screen with your CF-29H, and then sell the MK3
That is what i am going to do -
Hi Derick,
I have been testing my cf-29 for 3g. You have said it. It will only connect gprs here, but there is one good thing is that with vodafone we can connect as 3g with gprs and we will not be charged for beening on a long time just for the MB or GB we use. I was 3 hour on it to day on, connected over gprs and it did not cost me anymore than if I was on 3g
The 3g card in the CF-29 we got will only work with one US provider (I think it is AT&t) as a 3g modem as the 3g freq on this modem is set to 1800Mhz.
I have 3g card on the way from hong kong. When I get them I will test them in my CF-29 to see if they work and I will post back. -
Oke, i will have mine today (finally cleared by customs)
Report back if the Hongkong card works, i wait.
If it doesn't work i will mod it withe the 3g stick inside, i have a little pcb with usb on for cn18 connector (bought it from Vincent, pcb only) and a pigtail for the internal antenna, so it will not be difficult. -
As far as Sprint/Verizon is concerned, as long as you have a Sierra Wireless MC5725 card to go into the sled then you are golden. They make these cards BRAND SPECIFIC (IE, Verizon/Sprint) and then you just call the provider to activate it by giving them the IMEI code.
Also, peewee3ie, you got your numbers wrong... In the US (Rather it be CDMA (Sprint/Verizon/USCC) or GSM (ATT/Tmobile) the frequencies are 1900/850 (Mostly 1900) and in EUROPE you will have 1800/900. With that being said, If you have a Sprint or Verizon card it will NOT NOT NOT work in Europe. If you have a QUAD BAND ATT 3G card then it WILL work in Europe. -
JB007Rules,
they do work here but not as 3g modems. they will work on gprs which is a bit slow, but it work with no problems.
Here in europe it GSM or 3g over gsm, so the modem must take a sim card. or you can for get it as it will not work the old analog network is long gone here in Ireland and europe.
So it must be a fone or a modem that takes a sim card to work here.
I have contacted the seller that I bought my toughbook off and he said it was on AT&T network in the US. -
You are correct, Yes, ALL GSM providers use a SIM card... but that doesn't have anything to do with the service provided. If it's GRPS then it would go at a measly 56k - 90k/second, compared to 3G here in the US which is about 1.8M-3.6M/second. A normal GSM "3G" card will ALSO go at GPRS speeds when 3G isn't available
P.S, analog, by definition can NOT handle ANY data... it HAS to be digital -
One more thing... You also have EDGE which runs at 236kbps if I'm not mistaken... Which, was for a long time, the midpoint between GPRS and 3G as we know it today.
I remember having a T-Mobile EDGE card in my CF-29 about 6 years ago when I first got into Toughbooks -
JB007Rules,
That is true. I am the vodafone, but vodafone don't have EDGE. Vodafone also have 1900 ( I know this as I have a friend that works for vodafone they have done this so ones from the US can use there gsm phone here), but the 3g is on 2100Mhz.
A network called o2 here have EDGE. I have been riped off by them before and I am not going back to them.
Aslo vodafone will let you connect with a 3g sim card on gprs and you can be on as long as you what and as long as you dont go over your limited your ok -
I found out, Win7 doesn't support the panasonic mobilink software
It says it is a Siemens MC75 modem, i installed the drivers for that one, and devicemanager show it as a regular usb modem -
Denrosten,
Is this on your new laptop. If so could you take out the wwan card and take a pic of it and sent it to me at pos AT mcgcs.net or post it here. It could be windows dection it wrong I be able to tell you if the wwan card is the same as mine.
Also could you check your model number in the bios the one on ebay to see it the is right. If it not could you post it here so we could try and help you to get a 3g modem to fit. -
Any one know how to install gsm on a cf-27
WWAN card
