So I was rinsing off my CF-28's screen after it got quite dirty and well all of the sudden the screen goes black. I immediately dry it off and shake it free of water. I turn it off and back and on. The screen seems fine. The next day I flip it on and the screen is just colored lines. What do you think happened? Water fried the LCD?

That is possible, on the other hand Panasonic's Toughbook models should have sealed LCD screens and other such measures against water. My feeling is that there was some cleaning chemical in the water, unless the damage is not to the LCD surface.

Nope straight tap water, no soap or anything, I know how harsh chemicals are to LCD screens. I am stumped.

You got a good point, I am defiantly trying to get a hold of the seller to swap for a new one or get my cash back.

It is a sealed system, from the factory. Toughbooks are designed to run under running water conditions. My guess, and it's only a guess, is that yours has had some mod work done, or has been taken apart for a reason, but then did not get put back together which in turn compromised its seals.

All these "at-home" modders who are only interested in re-selling their "bought for dirt cheap" toughbook for more money with a few modifications, but don't care enough to do it right or make sure the unit still has its integrity are really going to bring down the good reputation the toughbooks have. It was quoted once that LESS THAN 1% of toughbooks fail while in the field. Now that is quality!

First off... The Dell and Asus guys just don't get it. We do it because we can! (Though I guess some can't! That's why we do the work ourselves!)

Second... Doobi is exactly right. VERY few CF-28s being sold on ebay these days aren't stock. They have either had parts replaced or have had mod work done. Some are good examples of mods... Some are VERY bad. (You should have seen the epoxy job I discovered on one not too long ago.) If someone replaced the touchscreen you can bet they didn't seal it all back up properly.

Who did you buy it from? I am learning a lot lately about who and who not to buy used TB's from. It reminds me of my line of work. I am factory trained, yes I went to Japan, Lexus technician. You wont believe what some of these husbands do to a car before they bring it to me to fix. It's like they have to try and prove to there wife that they can turn a screwdriver. Leave the computer alone if you dont know what your doing, and leave the screwdriver alone as well! Sorry, got a little bit of kilter there.............

I really should not comment but you started it Connor

This reminds me of an incident years ago when I was a teenager
I was working in a Grocery Store part time and a customer came up to me and told me that he was loading his grocery’s in the trunk of his car , and a pop bottle slipped out of the bag and broke on the pavement

Well that takes courage ,personally I would have been so embarrassed I would of just drove away

I walked him to the back of the store so I could fix him up with a mop and bucket

Well when I handed him the mop and bucket he looked at me strangely and said that was not what he wanted

He stated that since the bottle was broken on our stores property that he expects to get a replacement bottle of pop from us at no charge

Well I went and got the manager and needless to say the customer left happy with his 69cent bottle of pop :)

This all worked out for everyone the customer got what he paid for
    The store maintained its integrity
And me and the other staff members laughed so hard our stomachs hurt :D

LOL thats a great story. I wasn't out to imply that in this case the person in question was doing something dumb, I know its a TB and it should be able to take some basic abuse, I just sell things frequently and I hate when people try to scam you by saying something broke and it was obviously something they did not that the item was sold defective. This happens so much out there, I'm sure the others on here who work hard to sell a quality TB product can relate. Dont blame the seller for MODs or abuse gone wrong.

It was my first day on a new job, I was still fresh out of college and wet behind the ear, and my co-worker a grey haired older man with 20+ years of service to the company was showing me the ropes on a laptop, explaining how important it was, showing me the inventory tracking system, the time system and the contract system. Everything of my new job was contained on this laptop, and without it I would be unable to do nearly anything. It was setup just for me and it was worth more than my own life. As he handed it to me he let go a bit too early and I watched in horror as it fell, not onto carpet but into a puddle of water in the parking garage.

It was a Toughbook, he had a good laugh at my expense, it was a common prank played on the new guy by techs... and I walked away with a new appreciation for Toughbooks.

In the end I got the replacement. I told the guy what happened and he agreed with me that it is a Toughbook and should be able to handle the water. I had to pay the expense of shipping so I wasn't getting anything extra out of the deal. But lesson learned. Buy a Cf-30 when I get some more money and keep CF-28 screens out of water. ^.^

I have customers who want to avoid buying a chartplotter in the store all the time...

One lady was telling me that she was buying a super fast, super duper Dell to use on her boat.. 36 ft Sea Ray (real ponder!).. She didn't need a chartplotter!
well, i ask..Is it waterproof? Shock proof? Oh it will work just fine she says!

i walked into the office, took my CF-M34 and came back out to the counter she was standing at.. I slammed it on the counter like i was going to dribe a 10 penny nail! She recoiled back as I calmly opened it up and booted it.. I asked her if her Dell could do that? A ver small voice answered no.. Told her that if it couldn't, then it didn't belong as her sole source of nav info (as shouldn't a chartplotter either!)..

she left with a chartplotter :) And and new respect for old, sorry looking Toughbooks!

BTW, i was informed by the district mgr, that she didn't think that was an effective selling tecnique :) (my boss said to just do like i was doing..LOL)

Yeah I built it from the ground up piece by piece. I got a sick deal on the parts too. For $1,100 I got everything and this was like 6 months ago, saved like $300 by getting the OS's thru my academy program for free. But my friend doesn't work at Micro Center anymore =( So no more parts and I have no more money because of the lack of computer work out here. Plus books aren't cheap...
